My mom recently bought an iPhone X on sale at Costco and is trying to restore it from an iCloud backup from her 8+. The problem is that her 8+ is running 12.3.2 and the newest update for the X is only 12.3.1, so the option to update from the 12.3.2 is grayed out on the X since the update is from a newer version of iOS. Is there anything she can do to get this backup to work with the X?

I've had that same thing happen to me when I purchased a new phone. Just tell your Mom to update the new iPhone X to the latest (12.3.2) and then she can restore it with her backup from the 8+.

Well the problem is that the 12.3.2 update was for the 8+ only, so 12.3.1 is the new available update for the X, while 12.3.2 is the newest update for the 8+

You need to downgrade the 8+ to 12.3.1 first then you can restore the X with your backup
I was worried this was the case. I’ve done this before multiple times but it would likely be a struggle for my mom to do this. Do you know if 12.3.1 is still being signed for the 8+?

Another alternative is to get an IPSW file of iOS 12.4 beta 6 or install iOS 12.4 beta profile. That way, your mom’s iPhone X will have a newer than iOS 12.3.2 version of iOS, and restore will be possible.

Just a side note: if you choose to downgrade, you have to do a full iCloud backup after the downgrade, otherwise restore won’t work.

That’s a great idea, I think I’ll have her try that out. I tried looking up the place to download the beta profile but I could only seem to find the profile for iOS 13. Would you happen to know where I can download this profile?

Edit: never mind, I just found it. I’ll ask her to try this and see how it goes

For anyone interested or having a similar problem, I’d recommend just updating to the 12.4 beta until the 12.4 update actually comes out. You can download it by signing up for the beta program, selecting enroll your devices, go to the iOS section, and click the link (not the big one, this one is for iOS 13) at the end of the second section and then follow the instructions to download the profile/update the software
