If you're waiting for the latest and greatest Mac then I'm afraid you're missing the point of using a Mac.

Best settle with a PC and save a few extra quid while doing it.

Go ahead and buy nicer Windows machine. It will die on you in 8 months. Go ahead and buy specs over quality.

Macs die more often than DESKTOP PCs.

for 300Euros (around 400 dollas) I can build me a quadcore with amd's athlon 620 and it will live overclocked in the next 20 years. Even Balmer, who signed a macbook pro (pictures here in forum) wrote above his signature: need a new one?

THEY JUST DIE. I have two MacbookPro's that died on me. My friends macs die.
PCs never.

IF YOU USE A MACBOOK THE SAME WAY AS YOU USE PC, MAC IS MORE LIKELY TO FAIL. (if you play lotes of games for example). Even if you mess with overclocking, pc is less likely to fail. Ive had many macs and many pcs through my hand. it is a fact for me. Failure stats might be saying different thing, but I never believe them.

Buy a VAIO.

Oh wait, those might get updated too.

Actually, just do yourself a favor and not buy anything at all. A new update for everything is just around the corner! If you can't handle not having the latest/greatest (or do not have the wallet for it) at all times then you might need to tend to some self issues first.

At the end of the day the resolution and CPU/ graphics are way out of date for a company 'that likes to make great tech' as steve said. No one can deny that. They are simply blowing out their c2d stock, shame it's the same price as it was on release date, something the pc world does not get away with.

I don't really see that the current gen MBPs are outdated at all. Yes, there are PC laptops with newer i5 processors and whatnot, but they still have the same damn trackpads that were in 5 year old Thinkpads, they're still thick with things like VGA connectors or HDMI that can't do anything above 1920x1200, lots of confusingly labeled extra buttons etc etc. So by the same notion you could say that those laptops are outdated when compared to MBPs.

Even if Apple's laptops usually don't have the latest and greatest specs on paper, they make up for it with elegant, easy to use designs with just the right features and good performance for the majority of users. Gamers are pretty much the only crowd who are really left wanting. They are also the same folks who should just get a cheap desktop PC because they have to run Windows anyway. Or make it even easier with a console. Both will be better for gaming than any laptop.

I've got a Core2Quad desktop PC and a Core2Duo 13" Macbook Pro and both are supposedly "outdated" because they use older generation technology, yet they still do everything I need without a hitch. I'd bet that on the next generation of MBPs most people can't tell any difference to current ones in everyday use when it comes to performance.

I just feel that usability is very undervalued, people just stare at specifications.

You are right, people stare at packaging and print more than the 'it just works factor'. I will never go back to PC days, ever. To answer OP i would buy a refurb MBP now and then sell when the new one comes out, you will probably take a 150$ loss max on the refurb.

Don't forget Lenovo X series that will be refreshed soon too. Personally I love those little black bricks.

Like many, I couldn't have been more disappointed when they did not release the new MBPs today. I really don't want to wait anymore, I've had my present pc for 4 years, and for the price of the old MBPs I could buy myself a much nicer Windows machine. Can anyone make a reasonably intelligent guess as to when it could be released, since it's past its cycle already, it should be plus 1 or 2 months? I really don't know if I should wait anymore... I'm considering to buy a Vaio, any other suggestions/advice? I want to use it primarily with school, I do design work, photo editing and watch movies a lot.

You obviously do not care whether you use OSX or 7 - so then just go buy a Sony or someone else - they update their hardware about every month with new variations of their laptops.

right, my 4 year old windows is still alive and kicking... just a bit slow and old as one would expect. macs are not that great, i just felt like some change though. a fresh start of sorts, but windows 7 is supposed to be great (and cheap too), what cannot be said about the ipad =_=

Maybe I'm missing something here. What has iPad got to do with this?

Well, it's well acknowledged that OSX is better for creative work than 7, and that's what I want to use it for, thus I wanted to buy OSX instead. But then I was doubting whether there are serious differences.

Nothing, just throwing my opinion of its uselessness in there.

That used to be true but not anymore. The entire autodesk cataloug runs on either windows or linux...and Adobe sells more on Windows than they do on Mac.

Regarding specs, I like to be realistic about what I need as a user. My 2007 iMac (2.4GHz core 2 duo) does everything I need just fine. I routinely have several papers open in MS Word 2008, at least 10 web pages open, mail, ichat, scrivener (look it up), etc spanning anywhere from 3-6 "spaces" with zero slow downs. The only hit is in RAM (I have 4GB) and with all the stuff open for my two research papers I have ~450 MB left.

So, just consider reality before you decide to buy some quad-core monster :)

Some of you need to try out Windows 7, I think it's a very nice operating system and thats coming from a die hard long time mac user.

If your complaint is that the hardware breaks fast, think about the price point. You can get a very well equipped laptop for half the cost of a macbook pro (I'm talking 15"+) So even when you upgrade in the future, you can have up to date hardware for the same costs as the macbook pro that you bought in the past. It's very tempting... well at least to me personally. It's all personal preference.

But by no means are the current macbook pro's outdated. They're still very fast machines and honestly, if the price was right at my local store when the 'new' macbook pro's come out, I'd consider buying the older model as a discounted price. A friend that works there said she was able to purchase a 24" iMac for roughly ~#1100 when a refresh came out and that was the top model. (Before this new design refresh)

waaaa the new macbook didn't come out.."I think I will go buy a windows machine"...

Has to be the absolute stupidest most juvenile topic I have read yet. I will bet when you didn't get your rock'em sock'em robots for christmas you kicked you dad in the balls too. Seriously WTF?

Nice. So mature of you =_=

This is probably veering off topic, but why is it that macs are considered better for "creative" types? My cousin is the art director at ABC news and she uses macs and PCs equally - she only goes to the mac if she's doing video editing.

Does it really make that much of a difference, other than personal preference?

I'm honestly considering buying one of the current MBPs, because I can't go very much longer without a laptop..

Seems strange that you would change your mind about buying a Mac because they didn't update. Were you banking on specs you predicted would be in the next update?

Buy the current model. They're great. I used Windows 7 for a couple weeks before buying my Mac and I admit it's nice, but not near as nice as OSX. Especially that multi-touch glass trackpad.

No, but I guess I just feel that I should buy the computer with better specs, whether it be a Mac or PC. I know that in the end, I'll kick myself for going with another PC, though. I visited the Apple store last weekend and couldn't believe the difference in quality. There's really no comparison.

I haven't used Windows 7 - we haven't gotten it at my job yet. It's interesting, because I hear a lot of people saying that the gap between Mac and PCs is getting smaller with the advent of W7. I'm used to Windows, but I just feel that anything you download on that operating system has these tentacles that spread out over your entire system and make things sluggish after a few weeks. Maybe that's improved with the new version, though.

I was in that exact position before I bought my MBP. My roommate was at Best Buy with me telling me how overpriced Macs are and how I can get a better windows machine for less. In the end I still ended up getting a Mac (not that day... they only had white Macbooks) and I don't think I've ever been more happy with a purchase.

I used Windows 7 for a while and for my uses, it was no different than Vista. I got the same slowdowns after a couple weeks. That could certainly be because I was using a two year old machine but in the end, I wasn't impressed.

I deny it. Its a ridiculous and uninformed thing to say in fact. 1st of all the 9600 series is still a mid-range card despite Nvidia changing the name to GT whatever. PC makers have only had the new generation procs for a matter of weeks. How you figure the resolution is "out of date" is beyond me. I don't think you know much about laptops. Oh and theres this thing called "Google" where you can search and find much lower prices than retail on Mac Books. Or check Apple Insider.

The only real difference between Windows 7 and Vista is a slightly cleaner UI and some slight tuning under the hood. It still has a registry to get corrupted and stuffed with cruft which means instability and slow downs that can only be fixed by a reinstall of Windows. People who say the gap is getting smaller don't know what they are talking about and in fact Apples sales have broken records quite easily after the release of Windows 7.

I wish i could reach through your computer and smack you

As someone who spent 12 years in the Marine Corps I wish you wouldn't embarrass yourself. At least take the sig line off if you are going to be an idiot.
