Apple never sell Sim free at launch in the US. Usually a couple of months later. I believe to try and reduce scalping.I want a sim free one though., plus I don't have a verizon account so they won't sell me it.
In the UK you can buy sim free on launch day.
This year is different. Sim free is available at launch in the US--I just bought one.
They're selling SIM-free for the 8 and 8 Plus now. The X, however, no SIM-free at launch.
I walked into Verizon this morning and got myself a 256 space grey plus. In and out in 15 mins. Said they had plenty of every color and size.
For the launch of the 7 last year, you couldn’t walk in and buy a phone on launch day at an Apple store unless you had pre-ordered online. The Apple store employee I talked to told me they had only received enough stock to cover people who had preordered. He said they evaluate their inventory at the end of the launch day and any unclaimed phones along with any additional shipments the store receives overnight are made available to walk ins and for reservation online starting the next day. I don’t know if it’s working the same way this year with all the extra supply of the 8. But, I’m virtually certain you will be able to walk in and get one tomorrow if you can’t today. Also, this only applies to Apple stores. I’m betting you can probably find one today at a carrier store if you look around.
I lined up at Apple this morning and had no problem as a walk in. They basically went down the line of people who lined up and took info for what model you wanted, and then assigned everyone a check in time. I was 8th or 9th in line and was given the last 8-8:30 time, so I was in right when the store opened. Lady behind me got an 8:30-9:00 slot.

It seems like they are following a distribution strategy where you have to order it online or to a store, and walk-in's aren't yet available. Probably prevents backlogging of inventory for specific models at the brick and mortar stores, so they can launch internationally sooner with more stockpiled units.

Actually, the low turnout for the 8/+ makes me think lots of people are waiting for the X, and the turnout will be nuts.

Then there’s me - I preorder a 256gb gold 8 Plus at Best Buy several days ago for in store pickup, it says it’ll be available at my store today, so I go in at open, and boom...
No phone. They didn’t get a single gold 256gb Plus model. Plenty of 64’s, plenty of 64s AND 256s for the regular 8...and no gold 256gb pluses for any carrier. It’s kind of amazing to me really - thought this was supposed to be a “slow” launch...

I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t any available for walk-ins on launch day. Apparently, that was the case for some people who showed up at Apple Stores today expecting to grab an 8/+.
I’ve said this before but in my opinion, everything should be pre-order or in-Store pickup. The only iPhones that get sold in stores should be pick-ups that aren’t claimed. Just my $0.02.
Bought my iPhone 8 at full price a t mobile today. Other Apple stores were selling to walk ins as well. May be based on location.
