I wonder why this is getting restricted just for cars and not make this offering to smart locks too.

I would think you could add a module that would incorporate this feature quickly. For $100, I added remote start to my Ford truck and it took all of 30 seconds to install, and it works flawlessly, even from my iPhone (using Ford app).

That NFC only works with keycards at the moment. It's pretty annoying whenever I run to my car and my car doesn't pick up my phone's BT so I can't open my door. So then I have to reach into my wallet, find the keycard, pull it out, and wave it. Would rather just wave my Apple Watch to unlock. Far easier.

Plus my bedroom (where my phone is) is very close to my car. One time my brother came by and opened my trunk without me knowing. If I can disable BT unlock and just rely on my Watch to lock/unlock, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Well, you have to tell us what your brother was doing. Did he steal? Hide and scare you? Something else?

I'd hate to rely on a system like this, especially away from my home town. Maybe for a school run. I would never use it as primary means of entry. My keyless entry fob is so small I keep it in my pocket and don't even think about it. It's extremely reliable, useful and portable. I would not pay an extra cent for this feature - if it was free, maybe I'd use it once or twice, the same way I use steering wheel paddle shifters.

don't recall. it might have been when we both were going to our uncle's house for thanksgiving and we needed to split the trunk space of the food. it was something minor. i just remember being surprised he was able to open it without me doing anything at all.

This feature needs to be heavily marketed towards beach-goers and surfers. When you go to the beach by yourself, you don’t want to bring your phone, keys, or wallet with you, unless you want to get robbed. Even If you hide your keys under your wheel well, you still have a high chance of your belongings or vehicle being stolen.

With CarKey for Apple Watch, all these problems disappear. When the Series 3 debuted, it showed a surfer answering a call while riding a wave, so we know the Apple Watch is water resistant even in salt water. Now, that same surfer can lock and unlock his car without the fear that somebody found out where he hid his key fob. Some people swim with a fob-less valet key or waterproof key fob, but those can easily get lost when you wipe out in a huge wave, even if you have a secure key pocket on your trunks.

I’ve thought of an ad Apple could use:

A young, fit male surfer pulls up into a beach parking lot with a surfboard on his roof rack. He tosses his phone, keys, and wallet into his center console, closes it, closes his car door, and locks his car with his Apple Watch. It then cuts to him surfing a large wave all the way to the beach. He notices a young, fit female watching his performance with a laugh and a smile. He approaches the woman, starts some small talk, she laughs at his joke, and he adds her number to his contacts through his Apple Watch. The two then walk down the ocean front sidewalk / bike path to a lemonade stand. He buys two lemonades and two churros with Apple Pay on his Apple Watch. They then continue walking down the path, chatting and laughing while drinking lemonade and eating churros. He then walks her to his car (surfboard already back up on the roof rack) and unlocks the car with his Apple Watch. He opens the passenger door for her before getting in on his side. They then drive away into the sunset. Then it prompts:
CarKey
Now on Apple Watch

i guess tesla does have NFC in the B pillar of the model 3 - i once held my iphone up to it and ApplePay appeared on the phone, which was kind of funny. felt like renting one of those car share cars.

but tesla seems pretty stubborn about doing things their own way - no CarPlay so i assume that they won't be implemeting this even if it is technically possible.

The thing with that scenario is that the keypad unlock that Ford used for ages is even better, because you have to carry absolutely nothing. GM is adding this now. There's even OEM retrofit units that are basically wireless remotes glued onto your car.

Lol, you could have made up something for me. Maybe he goes in there a lot and you just don't know?

So what happens when you sell or buy a compatible CarKey vehicle? Is there an in-car option to force delete all existing keys?

Or just wave your Apple Watch?

I've used express mode in Japan, no wake up needed. Just wave and go.
I don't have a watch nor am I planning to get one. So we are back to me having to take my phone out of my pocket and wave it at what? How far from the car do I have to do these ninja moves for this to work? Like I said, for the past 4 years, I just reach for my door lock and it opens. no waving, no getting things out. I sit in my car and press a button and it starts. no waving, no putting my phone in a special spot. How is this better then what I have. For me to want this, I need to have at minimum the same level of convenience I have now, not something worse. Spec 3 sounds good as it seems to do that but they are years behind. For them to approve 2.0 just now and it doesn't even have the basics, tells me, by the time they get this right, I will be moving on from cars to my own personal space craft that doesn't use keys.

What would this have to do with being bored? It's about convenience for some. If you don't want it, move on. No need for unnecessary comments.
Are you the master censor? Why are you so defensive? I stand by what I said. Add lazy to bored too.

Just wave at the door and done.

Plenty of ways it's better
- It's more secure since no one can repeat your keyfob signal and get into your car while you're sleeping (which some people have had their car stolen this way, check youtube).
- Don't have to worry about replacing some keyfob battery every few years.
- The fact you can create copies for your family means your wife, son, friend can wave their key at the door and immediately the AC, the seat position and recline setting, the music, the calendar (auto navigates to the next thing on your calendar) are all automatically set according to their preferences before they even get in the car. Can't do that with a single keyfob

Can't imagine 3.0 being too far out, considering Apple included UWB on the iPhone 11 and I don't think Apple imagined a better AirDrop experience between two iPhone 11s is what the U1 chip was made fore. Likely a few years ago when iPhone 11 was in development, they predicted sometime 2020 would be the time 3.0 was released so they wanted UWB in the iPhone 11 early on. Seems like first half 2021 is now the target.

There are loads and loads of different smart locks for people's homes so presumably there is a big enough market for that to support all those different options. I considered such a lock about a year ago but there were so many options out there that I went down an internet rabbit hole for a while researching it all, decided there was nothing that 100% matched my requirements, and decided I'd wait a bit to see what new stuff came out. It would seem to me to make sense to expand this from being so car-centric and also target it at the home door lock market. I suspect a lot of people might find more use for the smart features in a home environment such as time and/or date-limited access for cleaners, gardeners (for a lock on a garden gate - no need to get into the house), guests etc as compared to a car.

This all sounds very convenient, from one device but i can unlock my car quicker with a press of a button. I don't have my mobile phone out, why would I?

The only thing Apple's riding on is security..

Oh, the irony.

I guess you don’t know what inanity means because my post certainly isn’t inane.
Anyway, I’m done with you. I’ve better things today.
Have a nice day trolling posts about things that don’t interest you.

LOL right.

one less thing to carry in my pockets, can't wait!
and if anyone has a Jeep Wrangler, you'll really appreciate this as my key fob is bigger than the phone.
I’m right there with you. 2018 JLU here. I’m just disappointed that this sounds like a feature that will only come to new vehicles.

I wish there was a way for the iPhone to read the chip inside of my existing key fob, and then just mimic that when I get near my vehicle. This way, ANYONE with a key fob like this could use CarKey, not just those that purchase a new vehicle 7 years from now when the manufacturers actually add it.
