CCC 6.1.7-b2 (7539) is now available — This is a pre-release update of CCC 6.1.6 (7530)

  • New
Added support for temporarily downloading cloud-only files from services like iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive and GoogleDrive (any cloud-backed service that uses Apple's NSFileProvider interface). Click "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the CCC window and select the "File Copying Settings" tab to find the new setting. Note that this setting is disabled by default and limited to Macs running macOS 12.5 or later. If you want CCC to temporarily download your cloud-only files to make a local backup, be sure to enable the new setting in Advanced Settings > File Copying Settings.
  • Changed
In 6.1.6 we added a new setting to "Use the  menu dialog for task restart/shutdown requests". We enabled that setting by default, figuring it gives people a more graceful opportunity to cancel shutdown if they're in the middle of something, and no harm done if the user isn't at the system (the system performs the request after a 60-second countdown). But, apparently macOS doesn't present that dialog if the screen is locked, and doesn't perform the power management request either. The setting is still available, but now it will be disabled by default.
  • Fixed
Addressed an error that could occur when copying sparse files that have a negative physical file size (which is corruption of the file's filesystem entry on the source).
  • Changed
Added recognition of macOS 14 Sonoma.

hey I can't go through 15 pages of this thread but can you cut it short for me, is bootable copies back for CCC or no more?

Currently we refer to the legacy bootable backup as a limited time snapshot now that cannot provide both incremental system/data volume backups. This is why if you need to do backups, a standard backup is good enough to use with Migration Assistant as you are creating an Automated System Recovery volume (ASR). A bootable volume is not necessary for system restoration if you have at least ASR volume to use.

The legacy bootable system version is locked to what version is used when you do the snapshot. Until we see MacOS 14 beta 2 we can't check to see if the APFS utility has been fixed by Apple. Both MacOS 12/13 had this limitation with incremental changes to system volume.

^^^^Not my experience - My current Sonoma Boot Volume was cloned from my Ventura Boot Volume. When first booted into Ventura V14.5, Beta 2, I got a dialog box informing me that it was a CCC created volume and did I want it to remain. I clicked no. I then updated to the Sonoma Beta 1. This was two weeks ago, and all has been fine. I shut down every night and reboot every morning.

Lou

Note MacOS 14 beta 2 has an issue with CCC 6.1.7-b2 (7539), since you need to click on a mounted volume (source or destination) to enable legacy bootable snapshot it will cause CCC app to crash. You can still do a single volume standard backup OK. Dev feedback sent.

CCC 6.1.7-b3 (7545) is now available — This is a pre-release update of CCC 6.1.6 (7530)

  • Sonoma Bug
Sonoma beta 2 introduced a range exception crasher that occurs when presenting CCC's source or destination contextual menus (e.g. when you click on the Source or Destination selector when a source or destination item is already selected). This appears to be related to the dynamic loading of the "Disk Dashboard" menu item. We have disabled that menu item on Sonoma as we investigate the matter and report it to Apple.

For me it’s still unable to create a bootable copy of the actual bootdrive. Creating a bootable copy of the very same drive, if it is not booted from, works fine.

If you're not using CCC with Sonoma you can go back to CCC 6.1.6. (7530)

CCC 6.1.7-b3 has contextual menus associated with disk detail custom view when you click on either source or destinations disabled for Sonoma usage because it causes CCC to unexpectedly quit.

The current betas are for early Sonoma (MacOS14) usage. MacOS 14 Beta 2 broke CCC's contextual menus. Beta 1 was fine.

Any one know if I can make a veracrypt container in a cloud service and use that as a destination for my CCC backups?

I am still trying to find a FOSS solution to encrypt my data and back them up incrementally to the cloud.

Sonoma Bug
[b4: This issue is fixed in Sonoma beta 3, and this build of CCC re-enables the Disk Details chart in the Source and Destination popup menus]

@Realityck Hello. Just updated from Monterey OCLP to Ventura OCLP. Now CCC fails when starts cloning. Any idea?

Thanks.

Which CCC version is failing? 6.1.7-b4 or 6.1.6? Is this with MacOS 13.4? You do have 13.5 public coming Monday possibly. As the RC is released now. As you know I can’t simulate your OCLP, but you can always send a problem email with log attachments to developer and he can tell you what is happening for it to fail via Ventura OCLP. If I had to guess it’s changes to APFS volume security where it fails during part of the 4 pass volume snapshot sequence for you. :)

Hello. I request help.

Previously , I got a huge hard drive and partitioned it to multiple partitions and backed up my Macs as a bootable partition. Recently I had a drive corruption and got a new SSD.

I formatted the SSD as APFS encrypted. Now I thought since the backups won't boot any way, instead of using partition, I would make a simple setup where the destination would be a folders on instead of partitions and backup to that.

Would I face any issues using this method? Can I still use migration assistant? Is an encrypted drive more likely to face file corruption? I am guessing an encrypted drive can only be unencrypted by macos?

Using the info from Post 3 here , I restored a CCC backup (Monterey)
from my 500 Gig Macbook internal drive to an external 2Tb Nvme SSD in an enclosure..all seems well ! It booted straight up first time with no errors.. (The external SSD is also faster somehow in Blackmagic speed tests )
QUESTION :
is there any DISadvantage to now just only using the external drive as my bootup drive going forward so I get more drive space on my system drive
(The original drive is almost full as its only 500Gig) , and just keeping the original internal SSD as a spare drive? ?
I wanted then to rename the new drive Macintosh HD , but for some odd reason I cant seem to change the name of the OLD Macintosh HD
Thanks in advance

Fixed a logic issue that was preventing the "Manage snapshots on 'Macintosh HD'" option from being presented for the startup disk (i.e. because the System volume is typically not mounted).

Fixed an issue in which CCC would repeatedly (and unnecessarily) prompt for NAS credentials in cases where the username or host name contained a space character.
  • Changed
b5: Improved progress indication related to downloading cloud-only content, fixed an issue where CCC would appear to be stuck on a single file in a folder that had a lot of content. Fixed an issue that was causing us to only consider a single Dashboard client's availability for evicting cloud content.
  • Changed
b5: The dynamic performance chart is now stopped when a task is paused, and resumed when the task is resumed.
  • Changed
b6: Fixed some more minor layout/view-drawing anomalies specific to Sonoma.
  • Changed
b6: Fixed a false-positive stall report that can occur at the end of a task that is recording millions of transactions.

Final Release of CCC 6.1.7 issued:

To add to that.

CCC 6.1.7 (7589)
  • New
Added support for temporarily downloading cloud-only files from services like Dropbox, OneDrive and GoogleDrive (any cloud-backed service that uses Apple's FileProvider interface). This includes support for downloading cloud-only content from iCloud as well, with some minor caveats due to Apple's use of a proprietary, non-FileProvider cloud-syncing service (oh, the irony!). Click "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the CCC window and select the "File Copying Settings" tab to find the new setting. Note that this setting is disabled by default and limited to Macs running macOS 12.5 or later.
