What features does CarPlay enable that I couldn't do with putting my iPhone on a vent clip? I just don't see the point. It seems like a useless feature.

This is a stepping stone, in the future you won't have to take your phone out and put/plug it anywhere.

Also bigger screen, integration with your car system, microphone espically. Steering wheel controls, better UI for when driving.

Perhaps you weren't loved enough as a child, or frustrated with your life and want to be able to take it out on someone who is successful and happy? It's hard to know without more detail, but most likely this isn't the best location for you to find help and resolution on your anger issues. Sending you best wishes!

Lately eddy seems to boast the success of Apple, with the Steve Jobs legacy in which he is unable to maintain according to their apparent poor performance in the company.
the punch makes sense for those who are watching these guys destroy our beloved Apple.

Aesthetics aside, CarPlay is "god's gift" to automotive infotainment. It is far safer than juggling a Bluetooth/USB'd iPhone, delivering better functionality than any of the fancy systems from the several automakers I've known. Keep improving Maps Apple, but please please please give us Waze in the meantime.

I would LOVE to have CarPlay but sadly there is no way to install it on 2013-2015 Honda Accords. Like the previous poster with a Nissan LEAF, you can't just install an aftermarket head unit in my car.

Anyone has a Carplay enabled car and an iPhone with iOS10 beta on it? I was just wondering if the new instrument cluster related features are working now? I think that a software update for our car's infotainment system might be required -> that means that we might never see any of new features at all :/

I have a 2016 VW Golf R, and I cannot imagine CarPlay on iOS 10 allowing me to use my instrument cluster for Apple's Maps etc, - at least not without an update to the car software itself.

Just gave it a go on a Vauxhall/Opel Astra 2016. Nothing on the instrument cluster. I'm inclined to agree with the possible need to update the car's software before CarPlay can take over. However, I do like the car parked locator despite knowing 99.9% of the time where I've parked anyway.

I wish I had this over Toyota Entune. That being said, my bmw interface was equally as horrible.

This was the reason I bought my 2016 Honda Civic over the 2015 models that were deeply discounted. I cannot believe this is something Apple released. Crashes or becomes unresponsive all the time if it even loads. The amount of missing apps that one would find useful in the car is hilariously sad. Just another half-baked Apple release to the masses.

Transitioning from "release when we get it right" to "release with limited features until we get them right" to "release and we'll fix the bugs of the basic features later... or just flat out reinvent the whole UI!" hasn't gone over well with the Apple folks I run with.

Also does this one it will display on heads display?

Additionally, CarPlay turn-by-turn directions will now be available directly in your instrument cluster in vehicles equipped with a driver-side peripheral screen for a safer driving experience.

Does this mean directions will display on heads-up display?

CarPlay makes me think no one at Apple bothered to use it before shipping it, it is a HORRIBLE experience. 30% of the time my car will tell me that my iPhone is not supported.

When I use waze, i mount the iPhone on a vent clip and use CarPlay just for getting the audio prompts into my speakers.
As to why I choose wake over Apple?
Apple maps is such a crappy app, not counting reliability or routing, to which i cannot speak. When I get a route, I want to be able to zoom into it ahead of time, check what streets it chose, to see whether I want to use it or not. Apple Maps won't let you inspect the route, not can you change the focus of the map while using it....
argh.

Where do you live in Texas? I live in Austin myself. I just traded in my nissan 370z for a new 2016 civic and the apple carplay is the biggest reason i choose the car besides the fact that the new civic won north american car of the year. anyways I like the touch screen and being able to use spotify like that. I was 100% dumbfounded that you could move or get rid of apps on the home screen and would have to swipe over to get to spotify. I mean i truly could not believe it. So i'm glad they changed it. Otherwise my previous car did not even have blue tooth. But you are right there needs to be some improvements. I'll be getting the newest phone when it comes out in a few months. Hopefully that makes everything run a little smoother than my iphone 5s currently is.

Why is it that I just want to punch Eddy Cue?

He's by far been the biggest road block for features in Apple Music, iTunes, and the App Store. The App Store was handed over to Schiller and he is making more changes in the last 6 months then Cue made since he'd been in charge of it. His role should be reduced even further in my opinion.

I recently bought a new car with CarPlay and for the most part I really like it. But every time I use it I have a decision to make - am I going to run Apple Maps through CarPlay or just use Waze on my phone (I still have a vent clip)? If I try to run Waze through the phone, CarPlay actually makes things more convoluted because what's on the car screen has to be on the phone screen. This actually makes for a more dangerous experience. Apple needs to open CarPlay up to 3rd party nav apps.
Actually you shouldn't be using your phone while driving. You make it dangerous. Not anyone else

How about some BASIC cover art to display for now playing?

Predictably iNconsistent.
There is. It's just behind and blurred a lot.

That sucks. With my Pioneer head unit I don't have that problem thankfully.
[doublepost=1465953431][/doublepost]I like CarPlay because I'm a lot safer than I used to be when I had my phone in a dock on the dash. It's crazy how much I use Siri now that it can understand me while driving.

The lightening connection also sounds much better than Bluetooth. It's noticeable when the connection changes (talking on the phone, start the car, the car picks up BT and transfers, you plug in the lightening cable and it transfers to that).

CarPlay definitely isn't perfect and I'm glad they're moving in the right direction. It needs an App Store as its in the same boat the Apple TV was version 3 and prior with only blessed (heavily curated) apps being let onto the device and that seriously hurts it. My favorite podcast app (very well known) isn't available and they want to be.

No thank you.

Am I the only person in the world that thinks this UI is ugly? There's nothing here but icons and text. And why the hell did they transfer the ugly home button of a phone into a digital icon at the bottom left of a car entertainment deck?

Because there is no other home button available.

I wish the map app in CarPlay displayed the speed limit where you currently are. The built-in nav on my car (I think it's Garmin) has that and it's really handy. Another thing it has that I like is it will display a "photo" of exits you need to take with signage.

Anyway, having the directions show up on the driver display will be nice, it was annoying that it didn't work with a brand-new car.

Apple Maps in Car Play routes around traffic - welcome to the present. Apple playing catchup.

The biggest benefit is that is basically puts your phone in "car mode", which is not an option on the iPhone. I use the microphone button on my steering wheel to send messages, change songs, etc. Incoming text can be read without having to reach for a screen. It is much nicer than a phone clipped to a "dock". I don't know if I would upgrade a head unit for it, but my car came with it and I love it.

I am going to download it today and test it. I will let you know if it works.
