I still don’t know why Honda included Siri eyes free on my wife’s HR-V but not CarPlay. Wish they would update her car at least.

No. Just poor marketing and customer service. At time of sale they just said it was ready for CarPlay and would be coming in the future. Did not indicate it required a hardware swap. I suppose this is where you say it’s my fault for not knowing they were using under powered USB ports that weren’t compliant with Apple’s certification standards?

Absolutely love CarPlay in my 2018 Fit - it works great the majority of the time.

Was very VERY seriously considering trading my wife CX5 in for a CRV mainly bc of the lack of Car Play and response from Mazda (the dealer told us "its coming" way back in Mar 16!). I will be calling the dealer ASAP for this. Better late than never I suppose.

That's not awful considering what they charge for the parts. I did mine myself but the parts were $160 alone.

It's only really useful for navigation. Factory navigation in our Jeep and Mazda is garbage. Its nice have google maps with satellite view and waze.
Where you get the part?

I have a 2014 Accord Hybrid EX-L that has the touchscreen head unit. I’ve been pretty active on a forum for that vehicle. Heard from someone with credibility that Honda had an upgrade for my series vehicle tested and ready to launch. But, some higher up pulled the plug because they didn’t think customers would be happy having to wait the couple of hours needed for the install (or some other ridiculous similar reason, been a while)

AND, it’s NOT easy to swap in an aftermarket head unit. The factory unit is integral to the overall system and must be either relocated or replicated.

damn that's unfortunate.

if honda doesn't offer an upgrade then i'm afraid my next car may not be a honda. i've driven them all my life and that's just nonsense.

(disclaimer: i know i bought the car without carplay and honda doesn't owe me anything but if a smaller company like mazda can do it then so can honda)

OEM is so slow in getting tech updated. Aftermarket units like pioneer already offer wireless CarPlay/android auto. Only OEM that offer wireless is BMW but they charge yearly fees. For what? I don't understand when CarPlay is suppose to be a free software.

A while back, VW was going to demo their wireless CarPlay at an auto show, but Apple shut them down for some reason. There was an thread about it on MR.

Maybe BMW and Apple have some sort of wireless CP exclusivity deal, and that is preventing other OEMs from doing a factory wireless CP.

Does CarPlay suck for anyone else?
Mine is riddled with problems. When I make calls people hear an echo of themselves back. Depending on when I plug my phone in, it will sometimes connect and others it won't. It will just randomly disconnect. It happens over multiple phones, multiple OS's, and multiple model of phone. Its very frustrating.

Haven't seen that particular issue. Does this also happen across multiple vehicles... or is the your car the common denominator?

My maps were outdated when I bought my F250. Sync 2 was terrible. I paid $1500 for a kit to make mine Sync 3 and am very very happy with it. I plan on keeping the truck for a long time and with map upgrades every year costing about $200 alone on Sync 2, I personally can justify it. Some can’t. It’s a choice. Waze on CarPlay is the best!!

I wish Ford had a $200 option for mine when I did it.

Amen to that! Sync 2 is just fine... for what it does... but Sync 3 is a huge improvement.

Given that Ford is not officially offering any upgrade path, how and where did you get your upgrade?

I have not had the echo issue, but I have seen many other bugs with CarPlay, such as random disconnects, not always connecting when plugged in, randoms issues like apps not working or not able to skip songs. Many other bugs too.

Sometimes unplugging, and re-plugging the iPhone in fixes the issues, but sometimes it requires me to turn the cars off and back on and restarting the iPhone.

The many issues I have seen has been with three different head units, one factory, two after market, also with different iPhones and different iOS versions.

It has gotten better since I started using CarPlay in 2009, as it was crazy buggy back then, but it is still far from perfect.

The Mazda OEM interface is so bad CarPlay is an improvement. We had the CX-5 for a year and man it was bad. Nav wasn’t very good though you could download celebrities to give directions. Plugging in the iPhone for iPod interface wasn’t worth the effort. It would take up to 5 minutes to catalog all your music before you could do anything, and this was an every time thing. I used Bluetooth audio simply because I had no patience. But it was limited. Sat radio interface was bad too, and telephone interface was awful. CarPlay will be an improvement.

As for issues with CarPlay not always connecting, I see that in the VW as well, but in my experience it’s waiting for you to unlock the phone. Sure, it’s suppsoed to remember your car and not need to unlock manually, but 1/2 the time it forgets. It’s frustrating because it doesn’t explain it. But the texting feature works well as does asking Siri for directions to points of interest.

I wish the guidance would show all traffic and not just your planned route. I am smart enough to decide if I want to deviate and let it reroute me, but it’s hard when you don’t see the traffic. Having to end guidance and then restart it to have it show all traffic is distracting.

When I was waiting on the RF model's to ship for the first time I was telling my dealer where the boat had left from, where it was headed, and what inventory was on it. The dealer guy had none of that information himself, I just had to tell him what to do the entire time, was pretty funny.

It's a Mazda. Not that serious bro.

Its really up to audio equipment manufacture and how much the car manufacture want to spend. Most if not all audio equipment is from a third party. If you seen behind stock units you will see markings of audio companies like pioneer or alpine. Car companies will try to put the cheapest audio parts. Cheap speakers to low powered head units. Aftermarket headhunts like pioneer are much higher powered and has more feature while costing only $400. Every major aftermarket headhunt from alpine, sony, pioneer, and kenwood all offer wireless CarPlay/android auto. If there's a restrictive issue it will be on aftermarkets but its not.

Hmmm I just need to see a tutorial. I would try to do it my self if I could. Parts here in Memphis is 170 and 200 for labor.. so just shy of $400

iDrive got perhaps a bad name in 2001 but in 2018 it is pretty sweet.

It is excellent and it is car oriented and thought out by someone that understands car use (unlike AA and Carplay)

And that is even before the new system launching with the new 3er with the mobile assistant.

Car manufacturers are behaving more or like the movie studios. Both saw how music studios got cornered by computer companies and got themselves moving.

I like how the 2019 3-Series has both a touchscreen AND the iDrive controller, so you can choose how you want to interact with the screen.

Maybe it's me, but CarPlay is pretty underwhelming. Especially if your car has built in navigation. The only thing I use it for is sending and receiving texts.

True but less underwhelming than Mazda’s infotainment system. I have a ‘17 Mazda3. The current system works, but man it can be flaky sometimes.

Car navigation is lame. Tech from 15 years ado.
I'm not going buy that. However, I do believe built-in car GPS totally sucks and except for getting quick directions home, way to time consuming to setup. THEREFORE, I think car GPS is more accurately describes as tech from 10 years ago.

That said, Apple Car Play with Waze is a vast improvement.
