I'm making a comparison chart of the support of both CarPlay Ultra and Car Keys on various vehicle brands. This may help you choose your next new car if you think CarPlay Ultra and/or Car Keys functionality is a dealbreaker for you.

Last edit: 7/23/2025. I'll keep updating this chart.

    • A 9to5Mac report stated that several brands (see reference [8]) confirmed support for CarPlay Ultra. This list covers all "Maybe"s from the earlier MacRumors report (see reference [1]). I can't confirm which is correct, so I updated the chart to reflect both reports.

About Maybach's Car Key support (Reference [5]):
Mercedes-Benz Digital Vehicle Key will initially be offered for the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV and the E-Class Sedan.

About Ford, Nissan, and Infiniti's response of CarPlay Ultra (Reference [6]):
Ford, Nissan and Infiniti declined to tell the FT what their plans are.

As a fan, I would like to have the full Apple experience on my car, though it's not a dealbreaker. Let's see if those "Maybe"s and "Unknown"s will get CarPlay Ultra, especially for those that will also support Car Keys.

What's your view on CarPlay Ultra and/or Car Keys? Do these affect your purchase decisions?

Great job on this. We currently have two 2024 BMW X6โ€™s with CarKey. Not having CarKey is a deal breaker for me but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Audi S7, the car I want the most, now has CarKey support. CarPlay Ultra looks fantastic but not a deal breaker. Regular CarPlay is just fine.

I havenโ€™t carried keys of any sort with me in over a year and I feel so liberated. HomeKey is great too.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I would enjoy using my car key and home key on Apple Wallet too. Saving lots of physical space in my jeans pocket.

I'd love to have CarKey, but my current car was built during the chip shortage so wireless charging was deleted (and with that, CarKey). Boo:mad:

Would not consider a car without CarPlay though - bit miffed BMW isn't going for CarPlay Ultra, but I'll live with(out) it.

This is a great list. Thank you for putting it together. Iโ€™ll be likely purchasing a new 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe in a few weeks and I understand that it has CarKey support. If I have an iPhone 15 PM, does anyone know if Iโ€™ll need to tap my phone near the door handle to unlock, or just have my phone in the general proximity of the door (without needing to take it out of my bag?) The UWB/NFC thing still confuses me a little bit.

Also, when you tap on the card in Wallet, can you remote start the climate control without being near the car? It would be awesome to get that going when Iโ€™m one stop away on the train so the car is nice and cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

2022 BMW X3? i retrofitted mine. ๐Ÿ‘€ quite extensive but its great not having to bring either my car and home keys. all live in my phone/watch.

2022 M440i Convertible (G23).

It has full wireless CarPlay and has all the Tech Pack 2 goodies, Comfort Access etc. But due to the chip shortages at build time (dammit Covid) no wireless charging which AIUI is required for CarKey as that's where the NFC stuff is.

I could be wrong and if I am, I might be tempted to go for a retrofit.

1. Yes, Carkey retrofitted, but you MUST have 32Z "Deletion of Digital Key" on your build sheet. If that doesnt show up then your BMW was never meant to have digital key in the first place.

2. Wireless charging isn't necessary. The NFC pad is necessary. There is a glyph on the phone tray with a picture of a smartphone with the wifi symbol, battery symbol, or BOTH. Wifi looking symbol denotes NFC. Battery denotes charging. Both obviously supports both.

3. In terms of retrofitting it's an extensive process. I had to get a new driver side door handle, NFC/Charging tray, specific 6-pin plug, new cupholders, and a few feet of wires. Wires from the NFC pad have to be directly connected to BDC in the passenger footwell. Then it involves coding (updated VO) and then SOMEHOW getting that updated vehicle build into BMW's server to basically trick BMW into thinking that your car is fully enabled for digital key. This can either be done by waiting for a BMW OTA update (i waited a few weeks since my timing was right), or to go to your service center and getting a tech to hook your car up to their computers.

all in all it was a lengthy and arduous process to do but it works on my end and Im happy with it. sadly i cant get the NFC card from BMW but no big deal since I always have my phone/watch with me anyways.

Thatโ€™s awesome. I didnโ€™t even know retrofitting was an option.
