What I mean is that I hope you have a Softbank Japan sim with you so you can activate it.
Cause it will not activate and let you past the activation screen if you ever restore it or update its firmware.
If you cant activate it then you will not be able to use it as an ipod touch or as anything.
??? Well my phone says No Sim right next to the wifi icon and I recently restored so...I'm lucky?

Damn near impossible to unlock Softbank! The only outside chance you have is if your iPhone is 8GB. The 16's and 32's are completely shut out.

Even then, it is expensive and takes two weeks, minimum.
I know... I picked up a fairly cheap iPhone right here on MacRumors that was Softbank locked and went all around looking for a breakthrough.

I did order a Softbank SIM off of eBay so I could at least use it as an iPod. I did so until I finally was able to sell it during the Christmas 30% bonus promotion GameStop was running a few weeks back.

I don't miss that iPhone nor the experience!
i feel your pain. Japanese carriers are horrendous. In store staff service is great of course because it's Japan but man the carriers are even worse than Canadian carriers. At least Canadian carriers let you share one data plan for your devices.

I had to pay SoftBank $100 just for cancelling my contract a couple months ago because I was leaving Japan. And my phone had already been paid off in 2012! Bought it in 2010. AND...they won't let your wife or other immediate family cancel it on your behalf say two weeks after you leave the country in case you'd like to use your phone while you buy a new phone or need it in an emergency while traveling. They can easily have you sign a cancellation permission form with your wife there! Idiots!

That's why I have decided when I go back I will buy a new iPod Touch when the new ones come out in 2014 and only use Skype, Line wifi etc. No phone plan for me. Everyone texts now anyway. The only time I had to use the phone was calling back banks, tax office etc.

If I do buy an iPhone 6 it will be a factory unlocked phone and I'll use some cheap prepay service if they have one by then.

I've been using a Japanese Skype number while in North America so work, tax offices, banks etc can reach me. Works brilliantly.

So you restored and activated it with no sim? Are you into the homescreen now?
I guess you are the luckiest person in the world cause it doesn't work like this with anyone else unless you have a sim inside from the carrier that the phone is locked to.

yes from a backup. Unless I'm totally missing something I was able to restore just fine. Maybe my mac had a cache of something I really don't know.

Anyway, it's all good. If a future restore fails I'll just get an iPod touch.

I personally think wifi will be so ubiquitous in a couple of years no one will need regular cellular service.

It still doesn't work that way, restoring from backup doesn't activate the phone or gets you passed that step and into the home screen. It still needs a sim. Just letting you know that's all.

So when we all restore from an iTunes backup are we also activating our phones? I thought we were simply restoring from a backup and therefore activation not needed? Technically a restore also goes through an activation process? I'm not talking about a restore to factory settings.

No, a SIM card from the carrier is still required to activate the device. What you're describing as being done is not possible with the conditions you have provided.
