Back in the Mac OS 7 days there was a system extension called PawSense that did this. Detected when a group of keys was pressed at once, like a cat paw on the keyboard, and wouldn't type it. Seems this new app just ripped off that same idea.

Apparently cats are just mimicking humans, so all you have to do is give them their own laptop and they'll leave you alone!

If you have a Mac and a cat, you've probably run into a situation where your cat sits on your computer keyboard. Whether it's because Macs are warm or because they want to distract you from the screen absorbing all of your attention, laptops tend to attract cats.

A new Mac app called Cats Lock adds cat-proofing that keeps your cat from doing damage to whatever you're working on when it gets on your keyboard, and it can even be set to shoo the cat off.

You can click to turn on Cats Lock from the menu bar or use a quick keyboard shortcut, and it prevents cats from being able to activate the keys. Cats can be particularly good at finding odd keyboard shortcuts you never knew existed and making changes that are annoying to undo, so Cats Lock is useful for preventing that. It also has an option to cut sound, so there's no more incessant beeping of keys when your cat gets on your keyboard and holds down a button.

Putting your Mac in sleep mode is an alternative, but you can also set Cats Lock to alert you or make a loud noise when your cat gets on the keyboard. Some of the built-in sounds like a barking dog, vacuum cleaner, or hissing cat might serve as a deterrent even when you're not around. You can also upload your own sounds.

Cats Lock stays on until your Mac goes to sleep, at which point it turns off so you're not locked out of your Mac because of the app.

Cats Lock can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $2.99.

I hope this new app works as well as the Chris Niswander's "PawSense" from many years ago. It was 'good enough' to merit an Ig Nobel Prize in Computer Science in 2015. Sadly, I don't think that there was ever a Mac version. Here's hoping "Cats Lock' is as well thought out.

After checking to make sure this thread hadn't been dug up from April 1......it occurred to me that including a hissing cat as one of the sound warning options maybe isn't the best of ideas. It might elicit the wrong kind of reaction from the cat. The sort of thing that might damage your computer.

The barking dog and vacuum cleaner options on the other hand -- perfect.

Neat for those that need it. Growing up and into early adulthood, we never had this problem with our cats. We actually did train them not to go certain places, including kitchen counters.

I’m not so sure this is a good idea. A spurned cat might seek revenge
My family had a demon cat that, whenever it was chastised in any way, even just wagging a finger at it, would go to the living room and pee in the middle of the carpet. It would then dart us a look like "Oh yeah? What are you going to do about it?" A few times I thought that animal was going to give my mother a stroke. That cat was evil. Pure evil I tell you.*

*We kids thought it was hilarious.

I recall many years (decades) ago, there was a Mac OS X app that could detect "cat-like typing" and immediately lock the keyboard
