I bought a 64gb Verizon from target on launch date while waiting for my AT&T version from apple, since I was torn between the two.

I wasn't totally sold on the Verizon though, so I didn't open the iPad just in case I wanted to return it. I called the store and they said once its opened you can only get store credit after returning. And both unopened (full refund) and opened (store credit only) you have 45 days.

Returned it unopened back to target and will just go through Apple.

Seems Target has a return policy that is different store to store. Most out here in Los Angeles WILL NOT return open iPads and most other electronics (North Hollywood, West Hollywood, Culver City, etc).
good to know because I am close to the WeHo Target...I will not be buying an iPad from there..looks like the better option is to go to an Apple store or order online via apple.

Verizon pulled the same post paid crap with me. It took forever and a new sim card to get it all sorted out. I think it is terrible how they are pulling this crap without even really explaining it or even asking really.

yeah.. they were trying to trick people into signing up for post-paid data plans because they supposedly couldn't get 4G LTE by signing up on the device.. and would be limited to pre-paid 3G towers..

Amazing that some customers had to leave the verizon store without working LTE and a monthly data plan and I signed up for LTE on my ipad at home and was on the network within 5 minutes.

Lmao, another return policy then! Some stores will return them within 45 days opened, some will but only give store credit if opened, and many won't return them at all opened!

You did the right thing, and u likely wouldnt have to wait long to do a return or exchange with Apple, they are hassle free.

Even Best Buy is far more consistent and easy to deal with.

Exactly. Only hassle with some stores with Best Buy is they make you stand in a Geek Squad line first, then the return line second but at least you know they will do the return!

That's definitely a hassle...Been there, done that.

But, you're right...at least they'll do the return...

The whims of individual Target managers make it a risk to purchase higher-end electronics at their stores.

So today I attempted to buy an iPad from target.

First off the sales rep was rude and not engaging. Then when I asked about return policies etc. I was told there is a 45 day return for opened iPads. He neglected to tell me the policy for opened items. So I called.

You CANNOT return opened iPads. Wow

Then he explained the target warranty. If you buy the warranty and something goes wrong you do not receive you money back you receive a target gift card. When I replied back that you do not receive your money the guy argued with me that yeah you receive your money because you can buy groceries at target.

Lol

Ridiculous

I went straight to Best Buy

Don't believe the person you called and there is no such "rule." They are a stupid as the minimum wage high school kids selling these things.

I walked into Target this morning with an opened iPad 2 purchased Feb 21 @ $499 and walked out in like 3 minutes with a full refund and not even asked as to "why" it was being returned. Didn't even have to take my credit card out of my wallet. They looked inside the box to match the serial number, scanned my receipt and that was it.

This thread made me nervous and had they not taken it back my first call would have been to the store manager and then to corporate. Target takes ANYTHING back except obvious stuff like opened software etc.

What Target is telling you is that if you have a defect with your device, take it to an Apple store.

Everyone must be careful about each stores return policy and know the facts BEFORE you buy. It is your responsibility.

Last yr I returned to Target 2 iPad 2, outside 45 days but within 90 days. One store close to my work said, return might not be possible. Went to the one closet to my home..no issues at all. Return was easy. Just did not want it.
Will most likely get it from Target.

I returned my new iPad because of the yellow tint and dead pixels. No problem what so ever. I purchased this an launched day and received a full refund.

You can return an Apple product at the Apple Retail stores.

True if you bought it from Apple.

Buy it elsewhere and that's where they'll send you to return it.

You can get warranty service at Apple Retail stores regardless of where you bought the device, but don't confuse this with a return.

True, but State consumer protection laws (at least in NJ but I'm sure all states have one) specifically states the return policy must be posted at the cash register in a size and location anyone can see without obstruction. The register in the electronics department where they take payment has nothing posted at all so they lose right there if a dispute arises. Also, Targets policy stating "most unopened items in like new condition can be returned" or "we take back most items ifthey are unopened" wouldn't stand a chance in NJ small claims court as it is way to vague. When you make the purchase you must be provided with the specific return policy for that item according to law (again, at least in NJ). On top of that, right on the receipt, under the iPad serial number, it gives a specific "return by" date and nowhere does it say 'return by 10/10/2020 only if sealed."

This must vary by store, as the Target I frequent has a giant sign above the electronics counter with the return policy spelled out in letters Mr. Magoo could read. :)

But this ain't NJ by a long shot either... :)

None of the 3 Target's we shop at do around here. Curious, do they say "no returns on opened electronics (or iPads)?"

Nope, the have that wonderfully vague "some items may not be returnable if opened" or whatever it says (I didn't memorize it).

Since it's not clear, smart thing is assume the worst and if you're not 100% sure of the model/config then buy elsewhere.

If you know what you want and aren't going to return/exchange for a different model, the 5% redcard discount nicely offsets the sales tax here (6%).

More than likely it is posted somewhere. Reguardless it is not worth getting a lawyer over. They will laugh behind your back as they, too, steal your money.

Former Team Member here, I was a front end manager and I can tell you the policy pretty clear cut. Unopened with a receipt is no problem, as long as it is within 45 days. If anything looks suspicious with the shrink wrap, we are required to open it. No iPad is resold, open or unopened period. Opened iPads are a different story, we aren't supposed to "technically" return it if opened, however, for an exchange for another size some managers will give a little bit. The buzz word though is " defective," we have to return it if anything is wrong with it within the 45 days. Be careful though, some managers don't know much about iPads, so if it doesn't "seem" to work, it's okay. I was very thorough with my inspections though, if it booted up no problem I sent them out the door. No receipt? Don't even bother. The policy exists because when things like the iPad 2 came out, people were returning the iPad 2 box with an iPad 1 in it. Corporate just went with a pretty blanket policy on it. Last but not least, don't be a prick, ask to talk to the "LOD" or Manager on Duty, be nice, and most will work with you. I always said, if you were kind to me, I would be more willing to bend some rules.

I returned an opened iPad2 to Target in Virginia last year, no questions they just made sure the serial numbers matched up. And there was a 90 day return policy. Sucks that Apple's is only 14. It should really be 30 at least.

FWIW

The Target receipt says 45 days BUT immediately after there is this vague statement "some items can't be returned if opened"

It says 45, it's not the consumers fault that the store can't clarify, it's the companies fault they are vague.

But it says so on their site, so you would be at a loss :(
"Computer Hardware (Netbooks, eReaders, Tablets), Cameras and Camcorders. Music, movies, video games, software and collectibles cannot be returned if opened."

lol ... they make us go through all that effort.

I like Best Buy though. I'm planning on buying mine from their, im just waiting for my damn finals to be over!!

Where do you get your information from son? This is from the Target website

http://www.target.com/HelpContent?h.../returns_and_refunds/returns_and_refunds.html

"Returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. For manufacturers’ warranty and repair assistance, call 1-800-303-0308. The following items are non returnable if opened and may only be exchangeable: music, movies, video games and software.

The following items must be returned within 45 days: computer hardware (Netbooks, eReaders, Tablets), cameras and camcorders."

The section upon non returnable is for open media (music, movies, video games and software). It clearly states 45 days, I know I have returned a defective iPad.

No problem. Just hate to see people get burned by these stores. Stick to your guns and you will be fine.

Also people pay good money ($500+) for these devices. We expect them to be to the buyers standards. If not, send it back and get another one. We all know Apple can afford it with about $100 billion in the bank. One extra iPad won't hurt as they will sell it refurbished.
