this is gonna be VERRRRRY bad press for Apple.

-
A massive leak of nude and risque photos appearing to be of huge stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Victoria Justice, and Kate Upton leaked online today, first appearing on the /b/ thread on 4chan.

The pictures allegedly were retrieved due to an iCloud leak that allowed celebrities’ phones to be hacked, and were posted on 4chan in an attempt to earn bitcoins.

Edit: oops can someone move this to the proper iCloud category. didnt realize there is one and i am on my phone

Apple has billions of dollars but they can't secure their servers. They deserve the bad press if this is on them.

Celebrity Nude Leak & Apple

rumors on 4chan are saying that these pictures and videos got leaked because of a iCloud security vulnerability. i can only say that this might be true because there has been issues with Apple securing access to the iCloud backups.

This is sure to damper Apple's iPhone 6 release.

Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, and Kate Upton were among a handful of celebrities whose nude photos were leaked late Sunday afternoon following what appears to be a large-scale hack.

Sounds like one of the dumps has a dropbox sample image in it; it's either misdirection, or this was a dropbox 'hack'.

Either way, Apple's going to get tarred by the likes of Mashable.

Just based on the giant list - I'd say its either:

A) An inside job (at some cloud provider, be it Apple or other)

or

B) They are really damn good and setup malicious hotspots throughout hollywood to grab data over the wire during backups (another common theory, since even SSL has issues of its own that makes man-in-the-middle possible).

or

C) Malicious software. It's possible. APIs and sandboxing aren't perfect.

---

I'd say A is the most likely. Probably some employee or contractor who had access to large amounts of data and snagged it over a long period of time to avoid getting caught.

or?

they somehow got access to their iCloud accounts, via password reset or some other way (a bug in the reset form?) and used publicly available software to download the contents of the iCloud (EPPB or wondershare come to mind)

This is bad. They only got targeted because of their social standing but if they can easily become a target than what stop me or you from becoming one too?

Either its bad the private contents of people's phones are basically available to someone who knows how to take advantage of the current configuration.

Not sure about anyone else... but I don't tend to make it a habit of having nude pics of myself (or partners)... at all, in any way shape or form. That eliminates that issue right there.

WATCH WHAT YOU PUT IN THE CLOUD... iCloud hacked for nude pics of celebrities.

http://mashable.com/2014/08/31/celebrity-nude-photo-hack/ <--- Safe link to story only. Obviously not posting a link to 4chan or any nude pics.

Apparently some guy hacked celebrities iCloud accounts for nude photos and is posting them on 4chan.

Sucks for the celebrities but what is really scary is the fact that some of the celebrities (Mary E. Winstead) are saying the photos being posted we're already deleted in the past. I guess iCloud doesn't delete stuff after all :(

Moral of the story: WATCH WHAT YOU PUT IN THE CLOUD!!!

It might be that she deleted the pics from her phone but the pics stayed stored in the iCloud backup.

Sensationalist headline? Check.

Poster already on ignore list for reasons long forgotten? Check.

Wondering why I see threads from users I've ignored? Check.

Too early to say anything, we just have to wait to see what the investigation shows.

As some mentioned, it looks like some of the leaks had the Dropbox's Getting Started PDF in it, which might mean that it is not isolated to iCloud and could be from Dropbox and other cloud services in addition to iCloud. Some reports mentioned the devices were Samsung, not Apple based on some of the metadata but that's not yet clear.

Because there is "trust" between Apple and its users over the content of their personal information.

The same is said for other services. If you're willing to put photos in Dropbox, it means you're willing to trust Dropbox and Amazon with your private data.

Apple is not any more trustworthy than any other companies. It is silly to assume so. As long as Apple has the encryption keys to your data, you CANNOT trust them.

The only way to trust your data is safe in the cloud is to not put it in the cloud in the first place but if you must put it in the cloud, then you must ensure you're the only one with the encryption keys. If the other side has the encryption key, do not trust them to keep it safe. Period.

Also, we have to wait for an investigation to see what really happened here. It is possible iCloud itself wasn't hacked but the iCloud accounts was directly accessed. The question is how and were all the photos from the iCloud servers? There are other rumors already where some of the photos looked as if they came from Dropbox and also came from different phones based on the metadata.
