Problem with AT&T land lines eh?!? That is kind of interesting. I live in a larger city in North Alabama. Got a call from my mother-in-law who lives about 40 miles west of me in a small town. She said that all of their cell service was out (she is on Verizon). She was calling me on her AT&T land line.

I'm not disputing the statement that it is an issue with the AT&T land lines, just found it odd that she can call out on an AT&T land line but not a Verizon cell phone.

By the way, I'm not having any cell issues here.

Where is 'here'?

And 'land lines' are different than back-haul internet feeder lines. I remember, back when dinosaurs roamed the planet, there was a line cut outside of CUNY, and it took the internet out for damn near the whole northeastern United States. We had Meritnet and they had a feed from Chicago that immediately went full saturation. You could get out, using Gopher, and Mosaic, but it was a crawl.

Oh, and the phones worked perfectly.

LOL well then in that case I'm sure power is out somewhere in the country and that'll effect charging an iPhone so we best report that too...haha
Agreed. Macrumors also need to report news on metallurgy since iPhones are made of metal. Maybe right now some workers are on strike? And highlight any outage in China since its the largest market for iPhones.

Perhaps they should take a tiny bit of their profits and put in a backup?
Backup hard lines? They are surely expanding and improving but running lines where a lot of them are underground is generally a huge infrastructure project, in size, effort, resources, and time.

Ah, so an all or nothing approach...that's totally how reality works.

I was in the outage area. Lasted a good 3-4 hours. It was All cell providers. sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. I have friends on each and can confirm they were ALL out.

Something's going down. Something related to Jade Helm or other nefarious plan. Hold on to your panties.

The internets are supposed to be 'self healing'. Literally finding a way through, no matter how convoluted. This has to be something really backbone related, and has to be that thick fiber optic cable with the 'DO NOT UNPLUG' sticker on it... o_O

Delayed reaction to BENGHAZI!!!. Or Hillary...

Or, a misconfigured HUGE trunk router...

Lol I know we are all joking here so hopefully this is taken in the same light. My mom was thinking ISIS. I told her that if this was someone trying to take down communications on purpose they did a crappy job. Cell service, SOME landline, and credit card machines were down here... However land based internet, radio, and TV of course all worked. To REALLY cause major national security issues those would have to be taken out as well. Thankfully we still have and use some of the old infrastructure in the United States or every time we have these outages we would have no backup and no means of communication. Oh and btw, here is Evansville, IN

ISIS will probably go for the power grid if they tried anything.

As someone who works for a carrier all I can think of is the waiting time for customers service tomorrow morning.. Tons of idiots asking for their service to be refunded for the 30 minutes or so that their service wasn't working..

(I should really get out of Customer Service I don't like what it's doing to me..)

Except that it wasn't 30 minutes. It was 5 hours that lasted from mid-afternoon through the end of the work day! Businesses rely on this network too and loss of communication with clients or potential clients or the inability to attend a critical conference call means serious lost revenue. Yeah there are people that complain about every little thing, but this was a major disruption with major consequences, not only for businesses, but for people who were unable to reach emergency services too. Try getting some perspective.

I agree, and credit should be expected should the interruption last over 24-48 hours.. Considering the average service (in Canada) is around 65$ asking for a credit for anything under than that would give less than 4$..

Then you let your customer know and he/she gets insulted "that's all you give me?" In my head:"What were you expecting" And then people start asking for all kinds of monatary compensation... And they end up waiting over an hour for a few worthless dollars a ruining hundreds of employee's day.

the canadian compagny I work for will actually be very flexible in terms of payments and delays, up to 90days late without interuptions. Although I realize that's not the case everywhere. Not all compagnies are sharks. Just like not customers are not all idiots.
So then nothing should be expected for an interruption of 12 hours? Or even 8 hours (a full workday)? Or even 4 hours? The customers pay for a service to be working so they can use it when they need to, but if there are some hours when they suddenly can't then it's all good, they paid for basically not having service at that time? Sure, it's unforeseen and perhaps an accident, but that doesn't mean it's therefore simply cinsequence-free just because of that.
