So in order to save a $10 one-time overage you activated a permanent $10/month addition to your bill?

It wasn't the gig usage. The iPad was not activated so thought I had to visit the store to get it going. And I figured 1 gig would not be enough on an ongoing basis.

I really don't understand why tethering sounds so hard to many that have posted. It's as easy as connecting to any wifi network once you've tethered once. It's in my list of networks and connects pretty much instantly.

Guess it depends on how often you're gonna use it. Tethering disconnects whenever the devices go to lock/sleep. If you end up needing to reconnect every 30 minutes, it's bound to get pretty annoying.

There's also the matter of battery life. I can barely get my iPhone battery to last the whole day and that's with fairly low usage (poor cellular signal). Meanwhile, the iPad has awesome battery life. I actually use the iPad as hotspot for my laptop. It can last 40 hours when used solely as wifi hotspot.

Up until this iPad Pro, I had wi-fi only ipads. For the 9.7 iPad Pro, I decided to go with the cellular model. The reasons being are: I'm in ministry and I get asked to guest speak/preach for retreats and conferences and a lot of those are away from a good cellular connection w/LTE (especially for AT&T). So having the cellular iPad allows me to purchase pre-paid data through Sprint or Verizon (whoever has a better coverage map for the area).

It's totally how the iPad is used within the context of your life (job, hobbies, travel, etc). I very rarely travel...and when I do, I have my iPhone with me to tether. I have a battery pack that I can recharge my iPhone two times over with...so when I do travel, it's a piece of cake. With some of the lifestyles that have been described in this thread, a cellular totally makes sense.

For me...I'm around wifi 99% of the time. (I had a KarmaGo for a few months and NEVER used it.) So...$130 goes toward getting the keyboard and Pencil and I still have some flexibility with tethering.

Choices are good, right?

I personally prefer having my iPad connected to the internet at all times and being able to go online anytime I wish, vs having to take an extra step or two to tether. It also kills my phone's battery and makes my phone (eventually) heat up, especially when the phone is in my pants pocket.

Maybe hard is not the right word, but rather, inconvenient, and I am willing to pay for the convenience of not having to rely on tethering my iPad to my phone.
