Hey, I noticed that **** is censored to ****. But whore is not censored whatsoever, and that's pretty goddamn absurd! I'd very much so like you folks in the admin/mod team to review what's being censored and what isn't so as to not, in a sense, accidentally deem certain derogatory slurs like whore to be socially acceptable for usage on this forum. Pretty big oversight that it isn't already.

Personally speaking, I myself would not auto censor it. It's not an expletive or curse word. It can however be used in a derogatory fashion.

I for example often say I'm a work-whore to emphasize how much effort I put into my job.

Like some other terms, offense can be based on where and how the word is used. If used to offend, well that's where the mods come in.

A line had to be drawn in the sand somewhere, or else we end up having an undogly amount of the lexicon censored.

These, of course, are my thoughts only. The mods may totally disagree.

In addition to @TiggrToo 's reasoning I'd suggest that a post using whore is more likely to be directed at someone, and thus in violation of forum rules, and the post will therefore just be deleted. Regular cursing is likely to stay in an allowable post, the profanity filter is just there to spare anyone who doesn't want to see it from having to.

Rest assured, TiggrToo, your usage of whore won't soon be stymied by the mod team here at MacRumors. Keep on using that misogynistic slur! It doesn't even matter if a few woman think it's okay. Whore is a vulgar way to describe a sexually active woman. There is no nuance to that word. Surely you can think of a better way, like, I dunno, "work-aholic" or "work fanatic" to describe yourself!

Nope! It is totally okay to say whore, regardless of the effect it will have on the purported minors on this forum! It won't get deleted at all. It's hilarious. I see so many MacRumors members rambling at length about "SJWs" and about the #metoo hashtag in a negative light, and I can't help but see a correlation between how **** and whore not being seen as equally vulgar as one another and the mod team's deeply held beliefs about those subjects and perhaps women as a whole. I just cannot see a good reason to keep whore uncensored. I like to say I'm ****ing my keyboard with my ****ing fingers, and of course **** isn't necessarily derogatory or harmful, but nevertheless, you see a bunch of asterisks in lieu of a very popular way to emphasize something.

Censorship is bad because it limits the ability to discuss topics. That's why totalitarian governments censor. Historic examples are Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany.

If you were to commit to that hilarious argument, then why is another word for feces censored along with another word for having sex censored, but whore is where we draw the line in the sand as to what not to censor?

It is interesting that you chose "whore" to focus on, then use "goddamn". I'm an atheist. Your word causes me zero offense. However I know that there are many Christians who'd be offended by the word.

Does that mean it should also be censored? I mean it is an profane word.

Dog no - However this is why I stated you have to draw a line in the sand.

My post was edited to omit a screenshot of moderation action taken against me for posting **** with the u omitted.

Some words can take on alternate meanings or connotations or even lose their original meaning over time. “Gay” is one such word. “Whore” is another. Feels like a slippery slope.

However bypassing the profanity filter is against the rules.

I'll spare you the lecture I give 9th graders on the cultural significance of so-called curse words. But you all understand that without the lecture. There are some words that cannot be replaced, although I suppose one could use "prostitute" instead of "whore." Many words have changed through the years and have either lost their vulgarity, or gained new meaning.

Usage of gay to refer to anything but a gay person in a neutral/positive light is usage of it as a pejorative. Using gay in any other way than that is a pejorative and should not be done. The same goes for queer. Another word for cigs/bundles of sticks should never be used by non-gay/queer people. There's a lot of nuance to be observed and followed in some cases. I say this as a queer woman.

How do I express the dismay I feel towards this ridiculousness? Surely it is without question that the usage of a derogatory word for sexually active women is not acceptable?

I am against censorship in general. One of the reasons is that when if you begin to censor one word, you soon begin to censor other words and soon soon half the dictionary is censored. In the context of this forum, I am against censoring alternative words for feces, I am against censoring alternative words for having sex and I am against for censoring alternative words for prostitute. As I started this post, I am against censorship in general.

I don't think any words should be censored. The harm is not in the word but in the intention of who says it. If someone wants to be nasty and insulting, they can do just as much harm without using any curse words.

As an example: "Were you born a fat, slimy, scumbag puke piece o' turd, or did you have to work on it?"

I truly do not understand this laughable “logic” here. So we’re now in a society that wants to censor words or phrases because it hurts our feelings?! Seems ridiculous to me. Why do we need to perpetrate the notion that the world can be a nice happy place with no one calling names or insulting. It never will be. Look around. There are countries across the world who would love to destroy us in the sensitive nation of the United States this very minute. Why are we so worried about someone using a word that we don’t like or has slurred me based on my sexual preference. Just because we don’t like certain words doesn’t mean anyone is ever gonna stop using them - even with censorship. Lastly let me touch on your second reply. You discredit @TiggrToo ’s post defending religious persons and calling out your offensive usage of a word, why? I believe religious people should have just as much a right as any to not have to hear words such as the one you used. However, that isn’t going to stop most people from saying them. Just because words are censored doesn’t change the meaning behind them and is certainly no solution to sensitive people’s feelings getting hurt.

Guess the mods don't agree as there has been no sight of them on this thread.

I see both sides and would rather not see the word, but if it's here, it's here.

We've been discussing this in our back office, we try to vet out the question and either a moderator or (more likely) administrator will respond in the course of time. Given that the recommendation was just made this morning, we do need a little time ;)

Surely you can think of a better way, like, I dunno, "work-aholic" or "work fanatic" to describe yourself!

What if someone who is a recovering alcohol is offended by that? Should "work-aholic" be censored, too? And what if people who work a lot are offended by "work fanatic"? Should that also be censored?

Both historically and in modern usage, "whore" isn't solely a female word. There were both male and female "whores" (when used as a non-derogatory job description) in antiquity, and the use of the word currently as a non-insult descriptor is often used toward men as well as women.

I don't know what word you wrote that is censored, but I take it that word is a "used to denigrate women" word.

And yes, "whore" when used as an insult is largely used against women, or as an insult to a man implying that "comparing to female is an insult," but at that point, the use as an insult is the negative part that is "censorable."

Similar to "bitch" - it has a perfectly legitimate use, although that is very rare nowadays - and it is frequently used as a "light insult" without regard to gender; but also its more "serious insult" use tends to be toward women.

Fag's another word that someone could take offense at, even though in England a fag is also slang for a cigarette...

I'm all for the current limited set of words - it's a known which are totally forbidden.

Anything else I'd personally say should be judgement calls by the moderators based upon usage.

**** those guys!

:D

Sorry, couldn't resist (the fact, this will be auto-censored just cracks me up) ...

I vote that whore should not be censored

I for one can’t stand the fact that certain woman like to negatively express themselves sexually and then paint themselevs or their activities in a socially acceptable manor

if it walks like a duck, an quacks like a duck.... 🤷🏾‍♂️

Not disagreeing with your point at all, but as a recovering alcoholic there are reminders everywhere...

I don't think people using whore in these other contexts mean to be offensive or rude. This one should be ruled on a case-by-case basis.
