Is this only for existing mobile customers with cellphones? Or anyone can go in and get an iPad with 200mb for free?

AT&T customer here

Anyone, I am with AT&T for everything but wanted to try TMobile. I went to the store, bought the SIM for $10, gave them my name, phone number and date of birth, they activated the SIM and I have 200MB Free on my AT&T iPad 3.

You can buy the SIMs online for $0.99 with free shipping if you want to save even more.

Coverage in my area is good so it's a no-brainer to swap over.

sounds good but I have to wonder if we won't be seeing that change and then a class action lawsuit from those who bought 3G iPads for T mobile. I don't think free service is a sustainable business model.
I know that can happen as I have been contacted about the Class Action against ATT for my original iPad 3G.

I'm still considering it but I currently have a GPS module I can use on any iPad.
So I have to deiced if it is worth paying for to get GPS again.
The 200MB data is enough to get your email free for a month. I used to pay $15 to US Cellular for that and decided it wasn't worth that to me.
I'm more tempted with the $20 off on the base 16GB iPad Air deal which I'm seeing at a number of retailers. (Walmart, Staples, Target and others) Looks like Apple isn't enforcing pricing levels on the bottom model and allowing it to be sold as a loss leader.

Can you get the 0 down deal only at T-Mobile stores or can you also get it at authorized dealers like a Walmart or Staples?

Very tempted to pick up a T-mobile iPad mini with Retina when it's out... just to use it as a GPS nav in the car with Google Maps. :D

200 MB should be ample. If not, I can always use my iPhone's Personal Hotspot (also already on T-mobile).

My only concern is T-mobile changing its policy down the line... getting rid of the 200 MB free in six months?

200MB verified

Long time reader, first time posting. After finding out about this I went to the Apple store last night and purchased an iPad Air for t-mobile in full. I took it home and tried adding it to my existing tmobile plan and it wouldn't let me. So I chose the option in the settings to create a new t-mobile account specifically for this iPad. After answering some questions about my email address, phone number, name, etc, and confirming I don't want additional data each month it signed me up for 200MB of free promo data each month. I never had to enter any credit card information. I promptly received an email from t-mobile thanking me for being part of their free 200MB/mo promotion. Score!

I really hope this works out for tmobile. We need more competition to drive prices down.

For financing:

Free 200MB per month, after you spend $10 per month to have the OnDemand plan.

Not true. I have been on the phone with T-Mobile customer care. Whether you are a current T-Mobile customer or someone who does not have T-Mobile service, the 200MB/month is $0/month without needing a paid data plan.

This is what i have been told also. You get 200 mb "free". But there is a $10 fee for the line access. You can get a $10 dollar credit on your bill if you activate at least one line of service for voice. If you do not activate the extra line, and want to basically finance the IPAD. You pay the extra $10 a month. So basically you are financing the IPAD and paying $10 interest a month to them if you have no service for them now.

Was asked to purchase $50 monthly data plan to get my free 200mb

Wanted to switch away from AT&T and take advantage of the 24 monthly payments plan. They would not sell me the iPad Air unless I signed for the $50 plan period (2PM Nov 1st). Bad move TM Sawgrass Mills Mall, FL. Ended up back with AT&T.

This isn't the same scenario. He went in and bought the iPad from Apple outright. You are correct, if you own the iPad, you get the 200MB for free. If you want to do the option where you pay $26.25 per month for 24 months on the iPad, they charge you an extra $10 a month line fee, and then give you 200MB for free.

People have already verified that what you think is the situation is not true. The 200MB/month is $0/month without needing to spending anything more or being required to be in a paid data plan.

Are you sure about this? Cause when i go online it specifies that i need a voice plan to have the $10 fee waived. I called the toll free number. And they also said you need a voice plan added to get it totally free. Otherwise you pay $10 access fee for the device.

What I was told by customer care on the phone was that you can get the 200MB/month for free no matter the situation, even if you are doing the interest free 24-month T-Mobile loan. I specifically asked them if I do the 24 month interest free loan do I need to spend anything more to get the 200MB/month for $0/month.

I have sent an e-mail to John Legere and David Carey, both T-Mobile, and pointed them to this thread. Let's see how they will handle this situation now and clarify it even further. I suspect this is a training issue for the people in the retail stores and a mistake on the T-Mobile web. I surely hope that is the case because I plan on buying a iPad Air from T-Mobile based on the 200MB/month deal.

Thanks, appreciate it. Hopefully they answer and can clarify. See my post, for what T-mobile had e-mailed me last night: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18289229/

I'm going to go over to the local t-mobile store later today and see if they'll give me that deal.

200MB?

WhoopieDoo.

How about buying BACK T-Mobile UK and relinquishing that savage deal with that perpetually awful company EE.
I just want to point out that T-Mobile USA wasn't connected to T-Mobile UK, it's up to Deutsche Telekom whether or not to buy the other 50% of EE to re-form T-Mobile UK. Anyway EE is a great company, never had a problem with them.

Here's an exchange I had on Twitter. Not sure if it makes the water clearer or murkier....

If someones credit is terrible, then you/they might not get 0% and $0 down and/or might have to pay more per month. That makes sense.

The CEO already said 200 megs is free. As have many others confirmed it.

The free 200MB TM data plan for the ipad is tempting, but I already am grandfathered in the AT&T data plan on my ipad mini. It comes in handy when not at home.

I guess my only concern with the TM promotion is....1) is 200MB enough? and 2) are they gonna stop this promotion in a few months like AT&T did with their unlimited data plan?

Other than that, I think its great that TM is doing this. More competition is always a good thing.

Hi all. So just to confirm. I bought iPad air verizon but I can just go to tmobile to buy nano SIM card and plug in to 200mb free. Tia

Now that's interesting. I was in a Verizon store today inquiring about exactly this, i.e. are Verizon iPads locked, or can I use a GSM SIM in one. The rep said he'd have to check, and after a couple of minutes said all of their iPads (4th gen and Air) are locked. I wonder if that was a shameless lie or if they have some twisted definition of "locked".

Anyway, what exactly is it I need to buy at T-Mobile to take them up on their free 200MB? On their web site I see a "T-Mobile Data SIM Starter Kit - Nano SIM" for 99 cents. Is that all that's needed?

Thanks!

Yes, the nano SIM starter kit is all you need.

The problem is that if you try to do this on the website, you get charged $10/mo on top of the $26.25 for the device payment plan. This is waived if you are a current T-Mobile customer or purchase a qualifying plan.
