I have nothing against AppleTV+, but I do get a little tired of being told that I can't have an iPhone Mini because it "doesn't make enough money", when ATV+ loses 1B per year.

iPhone Mini's at least made money and kept a faction of the users happy and in the ecosystem!
1 Billion dollars is 1 day's revenue for Apple. Literally 1/365th of what they earn in a year. That would be like someone earning $50,000 per year spending less than $150 on something.

Dunno Tim Apple... watching Ted Lasso and I see A TON of iPhone product placement including FaceTime calls that don't really make story sense and feel shoehorned into episodes.

Agree.
To the point that it's sort of a running joke.

Well, I don’t buy it - Apple does what it does to make money.

But I also never understood how Apple TV+ would have anything to do with iPhone sales, especially since the experience of Apple serviced on non-Apple hardware is anything but good marketing.

So I’m still none the wiser as to why they’re doing it.

I see the point of TV+.

You have the TV app, and you need to give people a reason to launch the app and go into it. Enter Apple's own streaming service. The TV app also integrates other streaming platforms and lets users subscribe to them in addition to purchasing other iTunes content to round out their own media library (all of which gives Apple a 30% cut).

The content is of pretty good quality as well. Netflix could take a tip or two from Apple instead of focusing on ultra-disposable content which is just there to serve as background noise. It's also a good way to anchor the Apple One bundle, which is a good way to improve retention and keep users within the apple ecosystem.

Sadly, I don't know if video streaming can ever be profitable (Netlix is, and only at their scale and the prices they charge.

Its contents have been great but at that monthly fee, I'd rather pay one month just to binge what I want and cancel the subscription.

Best it can do it being add-on or part of the package of other local streaming services.

I went through Canal+ a French local cable and streaming. Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV+ are part of monthly subscription. That might work for others

All the hot takes in the comments here aside, I'm happy to read Cook's perspective on this. I really hope they can attract more talent to eventually take over the hallowed space HBO once occupied, now that WBD has ruined HBO.

Whatever Apple does, consciously or subconsciously, every line of code is to boost iPhone sales.

Also they still don’t allow DTS and ATMOS (HD audio) passthrough on Apple TV. Makes me believe that they must really hate us.
I think I read that passthru is coming this year

As a subscriber to most other streaming services, I can easily say that Apple TV+ provides the most exceptional content available out there. I can easily say that the content and production quality have consistently been of the highest caliber since day one. True, there were a few unsuccessful shows and movies that they invested in, but overall, all their shows, movies, and documentaries surpass most other streaming services despite the limited content they offer.

Of course. It's made to lose $1B at a time.
Im sorry.

From the very beginning of ATV+ I've been a BIG fan!

Cook made THE RIGHT decision brining new fresh and unique content vs the co.oetitions streaming catalogue and they've done a stellar job to the point where even Netflix' 1st few attemots look like junk (aside from Broken Mirror) that even they had to come again HARRD!

Man On The Moon ... superb storytelling ating and producing that just keeps giving (my subscription had to halt due to significant family life changes so I'm stuck at S2 and I plan to revisit binging soon!

There was that unique story of the fishing family that is deaf with the high-school daughter that can hear and really can sing! Having someone born blind visit my unique and advanced public school opened so much of everyone's minds hearts and big laughs - dude was intelligent bold and just freaking hilarious! So this movie stuck an accord and I teared lightly and unexpectedly at the end.

Silo!
Literary copied by Paradise (basic concept) but both are great!

So many others in ATV+ ... its as if not just the writers but the directors and producers are coming with fresh NON-cookie cutter efforts and I applaud them all.

Long post short: it feels like stories not programming of the old era!

I don't know if it's related (not an expert in DTS/ATMOS). In a recent MacStories article about tvOS 26 I read:

A new AVAudioContentSource.passthrough API is available to developers, adding the ability for the Apple TV to passthrough a high-quality audio stream in an untouched state to an audio processor or receiver further down the chain. Audio passthrough support will reportedly work on an app-by-app basis but will still require Apple to add support to tvOS for formats including, but not limited to, True HD, Auro3D, DTS, and DTS: X Profile 2.

Who is repeatedly telling you that exactly?

It might not be yet on the level of something like HBO, but the artistic quality of Atv+ is on the high-end . I hope they keep pushing quality over quantity, unlike Netflix.

There are definitely some good originals on the platform, but the reason they’re going to lose money is because of that.

ATV+ is the only streaming service that doesn’t license content from other studios. Sometimes people just want to watch their favorite classics — not just a handful of decent originals that cost a fortune to make. And most of their big-budget films are total duds — Fountain of Youth, Wolfs, Ghosted, to name a few. If it weren’t bundled with my Apple One subscription, I wouldn’t still be subscribed. Two months a year and I’m done.
