Ceramic is 4x as hard as stainless steel? First thing I thought of when I heard ceramic was the thing shattering if you dropped it. Guess not.
Harder usually means more brittle.

This does not mean a ceramic watch is fragile.

Shattering upon forced impact sounds a lot like the brittle to me. Just joking though, I understand that it is "hard" but not necessarily "tough".

Ceramic-cased traditional watches -- even from Omega, Panerai, etc -- are known to shatter if they hit the floor wrong.

But they're damned near scratch-proof.

Porsches have brake discs made of a ceramic/carbon compound. They reach temps of several 100 degrees celsius. Extremely durable and practically indestructible. Just saying.

As for the topic: that ceramic Watch looks beautiful. I had to gulp though when I saw the price tag. But again, beautiful looking material. So pure & clean.

The term for shattering from my brief research is 'toughness'. Hardness is defined by the ability for something not to deform or scratch, toughness is the ability for something not to shatter. So it may be harder but it isn't as tough as steel and will chip/shatter.

Yikes, $1,250 for a watch that needs to be charged up daily and may be replaced in one to two years - that's well out of my price range.

for them to make a watch that expensive and couple it with a rubber sports band as the only option is really ridiculous. They should have sold the watch without a band so you could pick what you wanted

they could've easily used gold, titanium or any other well-known luxurious material.

Sorry, Titanium is not "Luxurious" in any way, shape or form.
We make items from Titanium all day every day. It's a bit more expensive that Steel, not really any harder to machine (can be easier than some steels)
It's very strong and light weight, but it's nothing special.

For some odd reason the media have made it out to be special, but really it's nothing much.

I wouldn't mind a plasma ceramic AW + plasma ceramic link bracelet, but not sure if that's a smart buy (just like the $10,000-17,000 Edition) because of short longevity in terms of technology.

$1,299 for the all white ceramic is certainly reasonable, but I'm not a fan of white-bodied watches.

just as i was saying in other threads. I would jump all over the ceramic if it came with a ceramic link bracelet. I don't think that even the SS link would look good on it. so a $1200 watch with a $30 rubber sports band...

mine to so I am getting the black SS link. that way next year or two I can just buy a new black SS case with a cheap sport band and transfer over my link bracelet. I think that the link can be used from watch to watch for years to come and don't see it as expendable as the cost of the actual watch which becomes obsolete with technical advancements.

You gonna marry it? :D

It sounds fancy, and it's really light, that's it. I would like it as an alternative to aluminium because it's way stronger; but I don't think many people are having issues with denting their AW sport

Sorry, maybe I didn't express myself properly. It doesn't need to be luxurious nor expensive. I was just pointing that if Apple is trying to make a device look "luxurious" based on its material they could have used any material that the general public think it's luxurious (titanium as an example, many people, or the media as you say it, perceive it as an exceptional material although it's not actually expensive) than using an actual expensive material that is not perceived as luxurious and try to convince people that it is.

Because titanium is so light, it is not always perceived as luxurious in person. Lightness is usually indicative of feeling cheap.

The leather bands would look OK if they had ceramic connectors. I'm guessing Apple will expand the band selection if the new Edition sells well.

Maybe we'll get tungsten for the next Apple Watch edition if they continue the theme of using a new material for each release. That would certainly have a "luxurious" weight to it. The density of tungsten is basically the same as gold (which is more than twice as dense as steel). I can't find any data on the weight of the old 42mm gold case, but extrapolating from the difference in weight between the aluminum and stainless steel series 2 cases I would expect a tungsten case to be around 70 grams.

(I pity the engineer that has to figure out how to machine tungsten into a watch case, though.)

Remember all the talk 2 years ago that Apple had patented some special type of gold/ceramic alloy? I wonder if we will see that at some point in the future.

It's really pretty but too expensive for me. But at least there is a charging dock in the box, which makes the price a little easier to swallow.

I find humans funny things.
Years ago I bought a carriage clock made my Seiko.
Not super expensive, but not super cheap either. Nicely made, by a nice brand, and well finished off visually and quality of finish.
However, in order to make is appear higher quality? Inside the clock is a lump of solid steel for no reason other than to add weight.
You are right, for some weird reason, heavy = quality.
Odd isn't it that we should cling onto such views when they hold no rational whatsoever in today's world.
