Still way too much money and the abscence of USB 3.0 is a deal breaker. Cut the price in half and add that and then you have a product people will want to buy.

Expensive, yes. USB 3? Sheesh. Do you even know why you want USB 3?

A $299 solution that won't arrive for 9 more months isn't a winner in my book. Hell, I'll most likely have already upgraded to a new MBA by then or bit the bullet and purchased the Apple display.

The delay in delivery is a bigger issue than the price for me. Prices will come down as the technology matures and competition heats up... no different from any other "first of a kind" products. I'm very happy I bought the Thunderbolt Display and didn't wait around for this.

I don't agree with the comments that without USB 3.0 its a fail. With Thunderbolt, you don't need USB 3.0 as far as I'm concerned. Thunderbolt will do fine over time because it does things that the other protocols don't support. There are already some pretty cool Thunderbolt products coming out in the video production space.

Ridding the industry of the need for internal expansion is really the only way "professional workstations" will be able to go all the way in becoming small, cool, compact & quiet (using the technology of the portable market). It's not a question of why but when. I'd rather not wait another ten years for workstation power to shrink to sensibly quiet, cool, space-saving designs. (I'm not talking about render farms & server closets)
The Mac Pro is a 5-slot Micro ATX workstation. Unless you want to drop in a GTX 590, what makes a workstation hot and noisy?

Dell has Micro ATX Xeon hardware. The only thing left is a Mini-ITX based workstation with Thunderbolt ports. I am looking at you Shuttle, Lian Li, and Silverstone.

Or is the SG-08 still too big for you?

While I have followed Apple on the FireWire path and will follow them on the TB path gladly (they were -> ARE superior technologies and don't tax the computer as much than USB). USB3 is important for legacy support or interim before cheap TB devices appear.

The fact is we are a society that produces tons of content and people keep buying mass storage devices, and as of right now USB 3 strikes a good balance of availability, cheapness and speed (if you have a PCI USB 3 card on your mac).
Whenever I'll upgrade my computer I which to still be able to use my devices to their full potential, and USB 3 is needed for that (crossing fingers for the Ivy Bridge iMacs)

It seems 90% of the posts are just echoing each other. Maybe Belkin just put this news out there to see how many MR readers would be interested in their price points :roll eyes:

Too damn expensive! It's attractive and all but...no
For 300 grand i would mount a entry level pc lol

What is this piece of junk? So it basically turns a single thunderbolt port into 2 usb ports and a thunberbolt port! Amazing is there even a market for that?

A ethernet port and 3.5mm headphone jack? Like 99.9% of the computers already have those. Firewire? No one uses that. HDMI? You need HDMI when you got TB?

Seriously I wouldn't even buy this junk if it was 10 bucks. Are people seriously interested in garbage like this?

Now it's worth $300.

Too expensive, way too few USB 2.0 ports and FireWire ports. Never mind the daisy chaining of FireWire because not all FireWire devices have that capability.

And at that price, it should have at least 5 USB 2.0 ports, though 8 would be even better.

The price is not surprising. This is more like half a computer than a hub.

To connect fast and affordable external devices?

That was my thinking as well. Was the previous post a trick question? I refuse to pay £400 for 1TB thunderbolt drive when USB 3 is fast enough for a HDD and a lot cheaper.

I had hopes for this product. At $99-129, It would have been appealing. But not at $300. At that price, I'd be inclined just save up for a while longer and buy a 27" TB display.

They shouldn't bother, i can't think of a single person who would ever buy one of these for $50 let alone $300.

I think it's overpriced, but we'd probably buy those where I work. Our MBPs usually come with a BookEndz docking station that's similarly priced. The BookEndz works fine, but they're not interchangeable between MBP models or revisions. The Belkin device might be more economical overall, since we could just make one bulk purchase of docks and have them work with any TB-equipped MBP.

Do you even know what a docking station is? On my work MBP, I've got two external monitors, a USB mouse and keyboard, external speakers, an ethernet cable, and a FW hard drive. Plugging and unplugging all of that every time I want to take my laptop home or to a meeting is a pain, which is why I have all of the peripherals plugged into a BookEndz dock. Now, I'll admit I'm too cheap to drop $300 on a dock for my personal MBP, but I certainly appreciate the one I have at work.
