One of the Wallet features introduced in iOS 15 was support for home keys, which will let users add digital keys for compatible HomeKit door locks to the Wallet app on their iPhone and Apple Watch. With the system, users can take advantage of NFC connectivity to quickly unlock their home by simply bringing their device close to the lock.

Schlage today is introducing the Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt, which is the first smart lock in North America to support Apple's home key system.

The Encode Plus operates as a traditional HomeKit deadbolt, working over Wi-Fi without the need for a separate hub to integrate with the Home app across Apple's platforms. As part of the HomeKit setup process, however, you're also offered the option of adding a home key for the lock in the Wallet app.

With Apple's home key system, you won't need to unlock your iPhone or Apple Watch in order to unlock your door, and it supports Power Reserve so it will continue to function for up to five hours after your iPhone runs out of battery.

It is also a traditional keypad deadbolt with physical key backup, so there are multiple options for unlocking your door. Up to 100 access codes can be created to distribute to users who may need access to your home, and the codes can be scheduled to be valid only at certain times or revoked if no longer needed.

In addition to HomeKit and Apple home key support, the Encode Plus also features Google Assistant and Alexa support.

The Encode Plus will be priced at $299.99 and will launch this spring. It will be available in two versions, a more traditional Camelot style and a more modern Century style, with both styles available in several color options.

How do you manage access? Can you revoke access from anyone at any time?

Seems easier/better to just use a passcode.

It doesn't have Thread but we're about to fully renovate a house and I think this is what we're going to go with. We have traditional HomeKit Schlage locks now and they're fine but to have the key support will be awesome.

back of the house will be a room for rent and we can share keys with people who book it on AirBNB. It's going to be awesome. no more codes!

I've had their Sense lock for over 3 years now and it's been wonderful. One of the more reliable homekit accessories. I can use siri on my watch when I'm in my driveway to unlock the door and just walk into my house. This new home key version should be even better.

For the posters about worried about security...you can't just stand outside and have someone ask Siri to unlock the door. Siri will only unlock the door if an authorized account voice makes the command.

very tempting but at $299 just for Apple key is a little pricey

Little bit more to it than that. A basic unconnected keypad deadbolt is $100 to begin with and doesn't give any scheduling ability for guest codes. With the $230 Sense you get the connectivity to HomeKit and ability to create time-sensitive guest codes remotely. We've had that lock for nearly four years and it's been completely reliable. Super handy for a weekend cabin that we let friends and extended family use.

Haven't experienced that in the time I've had the existing Schlage Sense deadbolt, have you?

If that were to happen you know you can just tap in your code, right?

Yes. I have a Schlage lock with HomeKit support. If Siri doesn't work (only doesn't if my phone hasn't quite connected to my WiFi yet), I just type in the code on the door.

Nice feature add. I love my Schlage WiFi/smart locks. I wish they had this feature too. The WiFi features alone are worth the price. Auto lock after 4 minutes, notifications whenever the door is locked or unlocked. Remote lock and unlock, say for needing a neighbor to go into the house to check on something.

Just spitballing, but I think you’re responding seriously, very seriously, to jokes.

Someone will just break a window if they want in anyway.
Still best to have a key handy in case your battery goes flat, or you break or lose your phone.
They can break a window, but I’ll go ahead and lock my door anyway.

This has a keypad, too, so a key shouldn’t be required.

It would be nice to go do cardio without having to take my keys. My watch means I can leave my phone at home, this would do the same for the keys. It sounds pretty cool.

I like the low profile look. The most appealing thing to me, would be the Apple Watch compatibility. And of course, first hand notifications.

But I definitely wouldn’t be providing codes to neighbors ‘To check on the place’, ect. That’s just my preference for a comfortability level though.

How is the battery life on those? and do they support IFTTT (doesn't look like it from the looks on the website)

This shows a major problem in smart home technology. For every other thing I need to integrate in my smart home I need the August (actually Yale) lock. But to get home key I need this. Sure Yale will likely have one soon. But we have so many standards that they really are not standard anymore.

I've changed batteries (4xAA) twice in the nearly four years we've had our Schlage Sense deadbolt at our weekend (and a lot more during COVID) cabin. I'd assume similar for this new lock; though of course usage will affect battery life. Don't know about IFTTT

This really might not be far off, especially if you’re just barely getting in range of your Wi-Fi from your home and she’s caught in that in-between area where she technically has access to Wi-Fi but the signal is too weak for her Wi-Fi hungry needs
