Sooo I take it you can’t close your MacBook with this on? Actually I know one can’t as I had a skin on the inside of my MBP M1 and it would not fully close with it on. The tolerances are that tight. Something you’ll have to lug around, attach and put away when done? Naw, I’m good.

The best selling iPhones (and among the best selling models ever) are iPhone 6 and 6 Plus followed by 6S and 6S plus. As if everybody was waiting for iPhones to catch up with other phones' size. So yours is just a personal opinion.

Right, phones that had 4.7" and 5.5" screens. Right now the smallest one can get is 6.1"

It's interesting that the record set by sub 6" phones has yet to be broken.

Still, Steve wasn't right about that 4" limit ... but yes, there's a point there.

And I agree smaller phones have some more practicality but I also like bigger keys as I'm growing older (gee, I'm not 75, I'm 34 but my fingertips are getting bigger or something!!) and I remember I was able to type smoothly on my 1st gen iPod Touch as a teenager and thought a phone with that format would have been perfect forever (like a slim 1st gen iPhone). Now that feels crazy to me.

I don't even think smaller iPhones (like the Mini) have zero market or aren't cool, I think they were discarded because they have to be cheaper and cost extra money for development and parts while cannibalizing pricier phone's sales, which makes no sense for Apple.

To me, recent big phones are more of a burden because weight and space in my pockets than Jobs' theory of thumb ergonomics.

Many things in a phone are a trade-off between ergonomics and features you get. Turns out a big screen is worth that sacrifice for many people. And once you've crossed the limit of one-hand usability, why not go all-in for a screen that would make watching Netflix on the bus more enjoyable?
But yes, I totally get why some people want smaller ones.

He was right if we only consider one-hand use and ergonomics is your top priority. So... he was wrong, most of us just use their phone with two hands and we're fine.
Eh, I don't know about that. You don't always have two hands free, and if you look around, loads of people are just balancing the device in the one hand.

Like I said, we've all accepted the compromise of having awkwardly large devices in exchange for nicer and more capable displays. The use case has shifted signficantly from when iPhones were introduced -- starting as you say with the larger iPhone 6 display. People wanted more screen, and they were (and are) willing to accept a device that strains one-handed use to get it.

Ideally, the touch screen is an add-on option.

So those who want it, will pay for it, those who don't, won't have to pay extra.

most of us just use their phone with two hands and we're fine. Using the keyboard with one hand has never been optimal ergonomics anyway.
I still use my phone one-handed 99% of the time, but I also use a phone grip as it's the only way to use a larger phone comfortably and securely one-handed.
I also found one-handed gesture typing with QuickPath on a small phone very comfortable. It's also comfortable on my current larger phone with a phone grip--it's just that using the phone grip is an added hassle compared to using a small phone without one.
