This might have very well been answered recently but I've still wondered, how would the data charges work with the iPhone and the iCloud service? Maybe I have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the Cloud will actually work in practice (although I have a conceptual understanding, I think lol)

Do you know how much it costs? Does anyone? It would help to know. ;)

You are right, we don't know. The 16GB iPhone 4 is $185ish to build. I can't find anything that shows how much the 32GB is to build. That would gives us an approximate estimate of what the difference between 32GB and 64GB. I'm assuming its like $50, so make the 32GB $235 and the 64GB $285. If this was the case, I think Apple would sell it for $399, I don't think a $14 profit margin is large enough for them.

You're forgetting something. The phone itself costs more than that. It's like $700 dollars. Carrier subsidies ring a bell?

It's not coming out until fall, so I don't see why the prices couldn't keep dropping. Besides, we were kind of anticipating a 64GB model last year, and that didn't happen. So yeah, I fully expect to see one in September.

Although it's not coming out in the fall, Apple would have to commit to having a 64 GB model by now, as I'm sure the full phone design and specs have been decided and production is imminent in the next month or so. They would have to then anticipate a price decrease AND secure a adequate supply. Trust me, it's not happening. And I want it as much as anyone.

I'd settle for a micro-SD slot. :)

Data charges work like any data transfer would work. You pay a set fee to your carrier to what level of data you want. This will not change that - it'll just create a lot MORE data being transferred. So unless you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, you're royally screwed. :) One of the MANY issues with a cloud service.

With iCloud, you won't have to store music or videos...they would all stream. Heck, possibly even your purchased Apps...I see no reason why you couldn't pull them from the cloud as needed.

There are 2 problems with having everything in the cloud.

1. What happens when you don't have reception? In a tunnel, on a plane, in the middle of the fracking desert, etc. my phone becomes a paperweight. Not very helpful.

2. I don't want to have to pay data charges to listen to music or play a game. Not everyone has unlimited data.

Those charges are exactly what I'm concerned with regarding the iCloud. How can many expect to stream so much under their data plans... Unless the extra charges are expected and accepted, but I get the idea that most people wouldn't want to pay extra for exceeding their plans lol

Not to mention the charge that Apple will levy on the iCloud service itself. I'd rather pay the extra $150 or so upfront for a 64 GB phone.

Certainly? Is that confirmed then?

Pretty much. Unless you think they'll ship the new phone without iOS 5.

Developers don't have iOS 5 yet. Thus, iOS 5 can NOT ship for a couple of months.

Thus, either the next iPhone is a few months off or it will ship with iOS 4 on it.

I find it highly unlikely that it will ship with iOS 4.

in my theori, they probably will put 64 GB in the 5th generation, if the camera has 1080p.

Not likely this year. Not with all this iCloud business around. Unfortunate, innit?

Regardless, I'm betting on a 64GB model. You can prove me wrong in September. :p

a 64 GB iphone 5 is as likely as the ipod touch 5g receiving 128 GB memory

Possible but highly, highly, highly improbable.

The general consumer still uses 16 GB and 8GB (iphone 4 and ipod touch 4g)

In Fact for ipod touches, only 2 out of every 13 or so people buys the 64 GB version. 32 GB one is slightly more popular than the 8GB one.

Apple as of now can not cater to a minority looking for 64GB which is gigantic, I still have 2GB left from a 1 year old 8 GB phone.

Apple would force people like you to buy their other devices like the 64 GB touch or 160 GB classic in conjunction with the iphone.

This, this +100. Anyone who is in favor of the cloud clearly doesn't listen to music that much, not to mention the hit it will take on your battery life.

And anyone who has ever tried to stream VIDEO to the iPhone from your home server or even netflix knows that the quality over 3G is at best poor and at worst unwatchable. And it's nearly impossible to watch a streamed video over 3G on an iPad. So even the advantage of streaming video using the iCloud is spotty at best, unless your in a WiFi zone or the next iPhone has LTE 4G.
