If September 12th is the announcement date for the next-generation iPhone, it's likely that certain key tech writers already have press review units in their hands (under NDA, naturally).

Mossberg and Pogue are key Apple product reviewers. Dalrymple works with Mossberg at AllThingsD (which is the Wall Street Journal), so if Dalrymple says "yep" to an iPhone announcement on the 12th, that's the closest thing to an actual media invite.

These top tier tech reviewers have a lot more insight than your typical blogger or supply chain analyst or (shudder) Asian supply chain rag like Digitimes.

Definitely not. They get review units after it's officially announced.

Apple does use Dalrymple and AllThingsD as unofficial mouthpieces (for example, to minimize expectations for last year's WWDC, they were told there would be no new iPhone released then.

What is announced on the 12th will depend on how many iPhone 5 have been manufactured by that date.
Apple is only going to announce the Iphone5 when it has enough inventory to satisfy pre-orders and opening weekend crowd
