"SHOW PRESETS" is not where you Save or Alter the presets. It's where they are .... shown.

Simply change all the settings in the initial print dialog, and then just click on Save Preset from the Preset drop-down list.
Note that paper size does not get saved in a preset, unfortunately.

the initial print dialog doesn't allow you to change paper quality (plain or glossy), print quality (fast draft, normal or best), and cartridge colour (black or all colours). this can only be changed in the presets window where you can see the current/default/custom presets.
if u know how to change these values in another dialog box, please let me know. thanks

As I say, you can't change ANYTHING in the "show Presets" dialog.

Those items are under the control of your print driver, so how/where it handles them may vary.

However, the initial print dialog has FOUR main drop-down lists.
The top one is to select the print queue.
The next one down is for saving, selecting and showing presets.
The next one down is for paper size.
The bottom one is for "all the other controls". It includes Layout, Paper Feed, Color Matching, Paper Handling, and it will also have items for your specific printer's capabilities.
HERE!!! The bottom drop down list is where you will find all the options that you can configure.

Having configured the settings to how you want them, THEN you Save those settings as a preset.

Thank you very much. I finally found it. The last option is a drop down which is selected as 'Safari' by default. You change that to 'Paper Type/Quality' and then you get all the options I wanted. I hope the other guy having the same problem reads my post.

Thanks also from me, benwiggy. As a Mac neophyte, it wasn't at all obvious that there were further options other than "Preview" on the standard Mac dialog box (the default on my Epson B42WD).

Printer Options

Hi,

I am not sure if this will help, however this works when printing form MSWord for Mac2011 and from the Preview App. When the printer dialogue box appears on the screen, go to the 3rd drop-down list and select the scroll arrows. This should then bring up a list of items that you can modify including things like print quality, paper feed and other basic things you need to control.

You can then also save these as your presets if you want. Once you have changed the options you need, when you view your presets it should reflect what you have optioned.

For other programs this seams to differ slightly, for example in the 3rd screen shot I am printing from Preview and I use the preview scroll bar to control printer settings.

I hope this helps a bit. PS I am using OS X Maverick with MSOffice 2011.

You can't change presets directly

This is for Maverick and I believe this works for Lion as well.

You go to file > Print.

Then change the Layout, the drop down just under pages all, from,
to Paper Handling.
Then change pages to print to odd or even.

To save this as a preset then go to Presets and click the arrows and choose
Save current settings as preset

Changing printer presets (on mountain lion)

This always seems difficult to remember how to do, but it's better in Mountain Lion than it was before. I thought I'd record this for anyone in the future who has this type of problem.

1) Get to a print dialog that shows a 'presets' pulldown (using something like 'Print' within a File menu within whatever application you're running). If you're printing from within an application like iPhoto, this will be the second print dialog that you encounter. The first is more photo-oriented. In order to use an existing preset, just select it in the presets pulldown and then print. That setting will persist in all applications until you change it.

2) If you click on the presets pulldown, then you can select 'View Presets'. This will allow you to view the current settings you have associated with all current presets. You can delete presets here, but it will not help you create or change a preset.

3) Instead, start by selecting the preset closest to what you want. Then notice that there is another pulldown menu below the pages settings. It will likely have the name of the current application on it (Numbers, iPhoto…). If you open this menu, you'll see all of the settings that you can place into a preset. Change these as desired. Then, select 'Save Current Settings as Preset' back in the presets pulldown. A dialog will pop up asking you what you want to call it. Enter a name and you're done.

Setting default page settings

Thanks for all the hints in this thread. However, I found one more place where default settings are hiding, thanks to these hints. This is what I was looking for so it may help you.

In an application, use File ... Page Setup ... , then change the "Format for" pulldown to "Any Printer", then make the settings you want, then change the "Settings" pulldown to "Save as Default". Then click on OK to make those settings stick.

I had accidentally changed those settings somehow, and I was glad to get the right ones back!

At the bottom of the print dialog is a button with either 'show details' or 'hide details'. To change the settings you need to click on 'show details'. The dialog then changes to allow preset changes and or additions.

I too have the same problem. The values can be seen, but there's no way to CHANGE the values. I'm also able to "duplicate" a preset and rename the preset, but there seems no way to actually change the presets.

In the attahced screenshot, I have duplicated the "2-page landscape" preset, renamed the new preset to "1-page landscape", but I am unable to change it.

Noitce also that at -- at some time -- I had been able to create the "2-page landscape" preset, but I'm not sure how I did it. I'm now on 10.8.4, recently upgraded... --Steve

Oh my - resurrecting a 2-year old post, but since I had the exact same issue this morning, stumbled across this thread.

I managed to work out what was going on, and others here probably did as well, but seeing a few questions still unanswered, figured I would wade in.

The SO phoned, trying to get Preview to print on one-side, as opposed to double-sided.

I have (incredibly) never had to physically print a document off my Mac, since I'm pretty much digital/paperless in everything - I scan frequently, but never print.
I too was stumped.
Going in to the Presets menu, we could "see" the various preset options available, but had no way of "changing" them. Barring 'duplicate' or 'delete', which does as expected with the selected preset, there was nothing else.

I gather this is what was being asked above? How do you edit those settings, when 'viewing' the Presets?

And since I found this thread looking for the answer, and other's might too - figured I would leave this here:

You cannot edit those settings, when viewing the presets.
That's not what it is meant for.
All the "editing" happens on the previous screen, the one you land on, when you click Print.

It's a matter of UI design (or whatever you want to call it) - but I guess its easy to miss.
The Presets page is only intended to "show" you what available Presets you have, or have already saved, and what each of the individuals settings for those individual Presets are.

You must select the Preset, and then change what you need changed, on the landing page.

After you've made those changes, you can then use the top-dropdown arrow, to "Save Current Settings as Preset…"

So, in a nutshell, you 'select' an already existing Preset, and look at what its settings are.
Go back to the landing page, make the necessary changes, if any, and then save the current settings, as a NEW Preset.
You cannot use the Presets page to change anything, merely see what the various Preset settings already are...

See pics below, of the dropdown options, on the landing-page.

Hope this helps!
