I'll be embracing the notch. The extra screen real estate you gain in a form factor close to the 7 but with the screen size similar to my 7 Plus? Yes please, this is VERY easy to overlook at after a week or two of usage you will totally forget about it.

I'm actually leaning the other way. I ordered the 8, because I quite honestly wanted the smallest form factor. The Plus is just too big for a phone from my perspective. Now I'm debating primarily for the dual camera.

The whole notch thing doesn't bother me in the least, and I'd be willing to bet FaceID is going to stick around. I can think of plenty of times when my hands have been wet, dirty, where TouchID has struggled.

If I had looked closer at the dimensions of the 8 vs X sooner, I'd likely have gone with the X.

There's always next year.

I would have to find the quotes but in 16:9 for movies and no notch in photos you lose much of the ‘gain’ from full-screen edge to edge.

I'm defo getting an X but going to take advantage of the carriers 14 day exchange period. I printed out a scale copy of the iPhone X and its barely larger than the iPhone 7 and tiny compared to the Plus. I don't hate the normal size phone but the text is tiny weeny compared to the Plus, and even though I have tried going from the Plus to a standard size iPhone I think websites are tiny on it. Hoping the OLED display makes the X better to use than the standard phone but who knows. I also worry about the battery life, it aint going to get close to the battery life on the Plus.

I pre-ordered my 8 Plus at 4am on launch day... my decision was made shortly after watching the keynote. Chris's and the other Youtube videos didn't play a part in my decision at all. I didn't watch any of these videos until yesterday.

I did agree with a lot of the points he brought up though... and got some laughs out of his videos as well. One in particular... the swimming pool reference.

You love to swim and the iPhone X is a beautiful swimming pool... but there's a turd floating in it.

Would you jump in?

I wouldn't... and didn't. :)
Roflmao! A bit of bezel with some incredibly advanced technology embedded in them is hardly a turd floating in a swimming pool, but I respect that you formed your own opinions independent of You Tube videos. Best wishes on your purchase decision. I'm still thinking mine over though my husband is hoping to persuade me toward the iPhone X. I'm deferring forming any solid opinions until actual in-hand reviews start coming in. I at least want to hear more about the iPhone 8 Plus. If I get one, I'm very interested in the new gold color. Though the other colors look very nice and fresh in glass, too.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. I don't know how long you've actually been around, but your status says "newbie" so I'd like to just say hi and hope you stick around to give us your impressions of the 8 Plus when you get it.

For me, I was pretty close to pre-ordering the X, but as I thought things out there were a number of red flags that were raised as I mulled over the purchase decision.

First, I was thinking of the X because I truly don't feel getting an 8 is worth the cost, its a very minor update to the 7. I'm not really concerned or care about the A11, I don't do any heavy processing with my phone, so that feature is completely lost on me. So if I'm not going to get the 8, then the X is an option and it does represent a number of improvements.

With that said, the red flags I mentioned are:
I just couldn't justify the expense.,
The fact its a gen 1, product. I don't think I want to be on the bleeding edge when it comes to my phone, I need it for work.
Facid is single user only, where as I let my kids use the phone and it seems silly to have such a great new feature but have it limited - that's just me. I'm sure its fine for everyone else.
No button. I'm not sold that I'll be as efficient without a home button. I figure I'll wait and see how that shakes itself out.

Hey thanks for the welcome. You're the first to do that. I've actually lurked these forums on and off for years getting opinions (around the release of new hardware) and figured I'd join this time.

I went with the 8 Plus mainly because I've used the 6s Plus for the last 2 years. I'm used to it. I like the screen size. I like the Touch ID. Everything coming with the 8 Plus is just an improvement to something I'm already comfortable with. (CPU, screen, camera, Touch ID etc etc)

My reasons for passing on the X:

1st gen hardware (I just ordered my first watch... the Series 3) I'll let someone else beta test the X and will check back in a year or two

screen size - don't want long and narrow

Don't care about Face ID - I like Touch ID

notch is ugly and annoys me (Maybe I'd get used to it? I dunno)

Specs - I don't really care ... the 6s Plus is still plenty fast but I am getting the same CPU as the X anyway

Those are the main reasons... and enough for me to get the 8 Plus. The new gold color is interesting... can't wait to see it. I'll definitely be sticking around and will post my opinions when I have phone in hand.

:D

I don't see the X as being a replacement for those that use the plus. I think it's a great upgrade for those using 6/6s size phones that want a bigger screen- but the plus is too big.

I was contemplating going for the 8 plus due to the screen size- but then remembered I had the 6 plus- and it wasn't comfortable for me to use as a phone- so went to 6s- which was a much better size for me. But I miss the larger screen- so the X is a perfect compromise of the smaller phone (as opposed to the 6+) with a larger screen (than the 6s)

Rational and well thought out.

Apple's two month delay for iPhone X pre-orders will result in a lot of buyers contemplating the situation.

The iPhone X feels like iPhone 5S. For me, Touch ID 1.0 wasn't much better than passcode due to the number of misreads. Do I want to spend $999 for something that offers no appreciable improvement in unlocking?

I've become used to the footprint of the iPhone 7 Plus. Holding iPhone X cases, it feels small. If the display size were 6.2" or larger, it would be easy sell.

iPhone X feels like a lateral move for $999. I feel like I'm paying a premium, yet I still have to compromise (no blush gold color and lengthy delays). With December-January being realistic shipping dates, there are only 9 months left before the 2018 iPhones.

Which is completely unusual and out of character for me :p

As I suspected.

Now let me deploy my mod protection system. :D

I also changed my mind. I've been using an S8 for a few days and was initially stoked for the iPhone X. Don't get me wrong, it'll be a great device but not $999 great. There is almost nothing that the iPhone X does that the Galaxy S8 in my hands can't do and certainly isn't worthy of the extra $250. That said, I pre-ordered the iPhone 8 today. Hopefully the next iPhone X will come down in price a bit. Edge to Edge is nice but it's really and overrated idea. Wireless charging is nice but its very limited in it's actual functionality (can't really use it when charging wirelessly).

I wish you luck in your s8 journey I felt the same as you did the first week with my s8 Plus, but as the newness has worn off I have definitely realized that iOS and apple are where I am meant to be.

LOL all you people who change your mind...you know you want the iPhone X but don't want to be patient for it. I understand the thirst is real for a new iPhone but trust me - if you wait - you'll get what you want. I'm sure you'll be able to get it on launch day or shortly after. Last year, I wanted a JB 7+ and second guessed myself cause I didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks...and never got it. This time, I'm waiting for the X. It's gonna be so awesome and everyone who got the 8 or 8+ but wanted the X are going to feel stupid.

My bad...

When I said "welcome to the club" in my original response I was talking about the iPhone 8 (Plus) club.

My mind was never changed... it was made up by the end of the keynote.

But I really wish Chris Pirillo had not coined the term Permaturd to describe it.

Good lord, I couldn't make it through his video, this current crop of YT "Tech Reviewer" (emphasis on the quotes ...) are _halfwits_  I guess being in the tech industry for as long as I have, people yelling through some poorly articulated "review" without a hint of actual experience/education is just not my thing :D

Patience has nothing to do with it. To me, the X has too much of a feeling of being a test run for next year.

Stop painting people with such a broad brush and trying to justify your own purchase. ;)

I am getting back into iOS after almost a year strictly Android (many different androids at that). I was set on getting an X, but went ahead and pre-ordered an 8 plus. I will probably pre-order an X when available, but I expect that the X will face major shipping delays. I have been using AMOLED and IPS LCD Android devices, and while I can tell a difference, it is not a make or break for me, so the screen type has no value to me, screen size does. After looking at a lot of comparisons, the X is thinner and taller, and for most of the stuff I do on a phone, the wider 8 plus will suffice. I will have to have each side by side to determine which one I will keep and use as a daily driver.

I have seen quite a few videos from the kinds of reviewers you describe. They waste so many minutes sighing and lamenting and going off on tangents about themselves and their feelings rather than sticking to the points they promise to address.

IF these people are intelligent and have experience and education, they are undermining their credibility with the dramatics. They are making an emotional appeal on a subject that calls for rational judgement. People tune in to get advice from someone who ostensibly has experience with Apple products, specifically, and technology, in general, and end up subjected to breathless rants that are a complete disservice. YT tech reviewers are in a race to the bottom with performances like that. There are more professional and credible ways to critique Apple that ultimately would be more enjoyable to watch.

p.s. I don't know if Chris Pirillo falls under this description. He seems to in that one video I've seen, but I've heard he has a solid reputation, otherwise. I'm not particularly familiar with his work.
