Yep. 80 becomes the new 100.
I think if you leave your phone on the charger all the time or plugged in, in the car, then 80% makes a lot of sense. For most users though, normal optimized 100% is fine and forget about it.

I've often seen it as a waste of time. I boughts a 2nd hand iPhone 13 on 86% health last December. I've charged it twice a day for the last 10 months and it sits at 85% health. I do this not because it doesn't hold its charge but because I like to keep it topped up.

80% for sure , if needs to be topped up during the day then I’ll top it up. Chargers are all over the place especially now that it’s usb c.

My launch day 14PM was charged no more than 80% on average for over two years still has 97% health.

Yes, lots and lots of user reports, but the majority of them don't mention what their charge limit is set to. Just what their current battery health is which is frustrating...
I can tell you from my experience from my launch day iPhone 15 set to 80% charge limit. Battery health 97%. 232 charge cycles.

My 15PM was at 92% after 1 year with 260 cycles, 100%, optimized charging turned on
I’ve seen posts that say they charge to 100% every night with MagSafe and are at 99% after a year. It’s really not worth worrying about, especially if you upgrade every 1-3 years

Yeah, my thought is just… if I go to 90% in a year, may as well set it at 95% from day 1 and maybe have it stay there the whole time — consistency at 95% rather than starting at 100% and ending at 90%…

If you want to prolong battery longevity, these are the most important things to do:
  • Avoid keeping the charge at 100% for long periods of time.
  • Don't let the battery drop below 20% before charging.
  • If you have any capacity left at the end of the day, (say 40-50%), consider setting the charge limit to 80%.
  • Small top ups during the day is better than using the phone all day and letting your battery drop below 20% consistently.
  • Heat kills batteries. Avoid leaving your phone in the sun, as well avoid freezing it.
*This is of course anecdotal, and I have no evidence or tests that I've performed personally.

My 10/10/23 15 Plus is at 99% battery health. I charged it at 100%, optimized. I’ll charge it the same way with the 16PM as well.

Do you leave it plugged in every night on a regular basis? That would be ideal for the Optimized charging.

I really don't give much thought to how and when I charge. I use my 15 Pro as intended and charge when ever I feel like it. Currently the phone I own is at 150 cycles and 99% capacity.

I did most of that on my launch iPhone 14 PM which still shows 97% health.

Well my data point is pretty interesting.

iPhone 15 Pro Max
247 cycles
100% battery health

I have shortcut automations that keep my phone between 50 to 55 percent via a smart plug. Maybe it drops to 30 percent at most if I’m away from a desk, but I’m mostly next to a charger all day. On the weekends I let the phone charge to 80 percent and since there’s a charger in the car I may bounce back up to that a couple of times during the day.

Just checked CoconutBattery and it says I’m still at 103% of design capacity!

What are y'all setting the charge limit at?

80, 85, 90, 95, or 100%?

Should optimised battery charging be activated or turned off?

Obviously, battery health and longevity is a big consideration for everyone.

Saw a video where the suggestion was to set charge limit to 80% and not let the charge drop below 20%
subsequently.

PS. When I got the phone the factory battery % was at 87% or so...and I charged the battery up to 100% before setting up.

macrumors posted an article that showed someone (an employee here) having is set all year at 80% vs someone that didnt were almost the same results. Same battery health. So it seems gimmicky. I have mine at 100%

I leave mine at 100% and turn on Optimized Charging, then I charge it overnight every night on a MagSafe charger on my nightstand.

I could have sworn with iOS 17 and the 15 pro, you could enable ‘Optimized Charging’ when setting the charge limit to 80% etc. With iOS 18 and the 16 pro, you can only enable optimized charging if the limit is set the the default 100%.
