Well i was 5 minutes late for my appointment, and they canceled it. Completely my fault. I have another appointment set for tomorrow at 1:45. hopefuly i can make it on time. A stupid tractor trailer was broken down in the mall parking lot, and held me up around 10 minutes. So i will defiantly post what happens at the apple store tomorrow.

I'm going to say there was a high resistance between the MagSafe Plug and the MagSafe Port on your Mac. My best guess is that it just arced there for a while until everything got really hot, then it started melting stuff.

I don't believe there was anything wrong with your computer except for a dirty plug. Why do I say this? The brick has a built in thermal circuit breaker that will kill the power if there was a real short.

It's just like having a loose outlet or a dirty plug running a heavy appliance. The outlet and plug will heat up.

We have a boat at the harbor and we have to inspect the plug feeding the boat once a month for corrosion because it causes high resistance and arcing inside the plug... enough to catch the boat on fire if it were to be ignored.

The MagSafe has a bad tendency to get dirty. I clean mine out with rubbing alcohol about once a month, then run a graphite pencil over the contacts since graphite is highly conductive, and gives the plug more surface area for contact.

Apple will likely replace it because it is a bit of a design flaw with how much surface are they have contacting the laptop to the cable.

This is actually a grounding issue with the magsafe adapter. You'll see a lot of posts about the cord burning at the base of the cord and adapter. This is because the internal wiring is coming loose and pulling away from the base of the adapter (Magsafe). It is a quality issue and it's covered by apple. I hate to tell you this, but they will keep the MBP for damage repair. Once they replace the receptacle and test the logic board, they will ship it back with a new magsafe.
Better to be safe than sorry!

O.K., just got back form the mall, they let me take the computer home until the part (part# 661-5235) comes in. The genius gave me a little bit of a hard time, saying these things usually aren t covered under warranty because there had to have been something in there to short it out. I told him there wasn't anything in there that i noticed, and tried to show him a few threads about this happening. He didn't really want to hear about that, but then started to look at his computer a while. 10 minutes or so later, he looked up from his computer and agreed to fix the computer under warranty. So in a week or so im going to have to give my computer up for a while. At least there wont be any evidence of anything ever being wrong with my computer, I payed $1600 +/- for this computer, and i don't really want a burned spot on it.

I dont mind that he was giving me a hard time, as long as the computer fixed. I just want this thread out there so other people, having the same problem can get the same help i did.

Yay.

I personally think it's poor sport on behalf of any manufacturer to not cover this sort of thing as standard under warranty, but that's my own slant. A pure costs position means that a business will only meet any legal requirements, and very rarely go above and beyond unless it's going to be a negative PR spin for them.

I honestly think it was just the "genius" being a dick. Im just really happy it is fixed and back to normal.

This happened to me on my Penryn 15" old body MBP OUT OF WARRANTY!.. except it burnt my wind-breakers and melted them.. And the laptop refused to turn on after this incident. Sent pics to apple via email to the sr. tech, and he said to take it to the apple store (2 hours away from me) and they will take care of me.

The genius held it, and confirmed the battery was leaking internally due to electric surge (faulty adaptor) by smelling it.. and he said he would send the macbook pro out and fix it for free.... EXCEPT the Tech on the phone told me they would take care of the problem in the store (documented on the apple computers).. so I got hold of him over the phone with his extension number and he talked to the store manager and they agreed to give me a BRAND NEW 15" unibody 2.8/500/4gb/ANTIGLARE/512-9600!!! they didn't even take the retail packaging, handed me a brand new $2349 in the store. This is 1yr 2months after ownership, NO apple care.

Story goes on: 2 weeks later I was going to use my verizon express broadband card and guess what? NO EXPRESS CARD SLOT!!! I was infuriated. I called apple once again and got transfered to Customer Relations. Customer relations called me back in 2 days and told me I can have a brand new 17" Macbook pro due to that one is the only one with an express slot. I was super excited.
... until I had 3 faulty ones (yellow screens, broken backlit keyboard, sent Glossy instead of AG!!)
.. I was visiting houston and I had my third macbook pro 17" with me (im from indiana)

Walked into the Apple store at the Galleria Mall and they replaced it ONE more time and it was faulty also (hard drive was clicking like crazy) I went back from my hotel and talked to the manager who so graciously agreed to give me store credit (gift card) of the full price of the macbook pro + tax...= $2705.00
I paid 1249+tax when the first gen unibody got released for my old Penryn MBP 15" in my college book store.

I now PATIENTLY await the arrandale 15" (will get the 1999 model) and an ipad wifi for FREE with the remaining sum.

THANK YOU APPLE!.
