Yeah well, I knew a guy who knew a friend of a guy that had something slipped into his drink at a bar in Atlanta and he woke up in Piedmont Park missing a kidney

Yeah, and there's a chick in Cleveland who sold her eggs to buy a Zune.

I thought one kidney is all you need. How do they prevent legitimate kidney donors from becoming renally deficient?

They do a lot of testing before surgery to make sure the kidney you will be left with is working 100%.

This kid might not have been totally healthy and I am sure no one involved wanted to give up some of their profits to pay for the proper tests for to find out.

wait, i thought i was reading macrumors, not gizmodo... no, you're not nearly that bad but relevant stories please. :)

I still don't get why this "news" is worthy of being mentioned in macrumors... If the guy would used the money to buy a dog, a car, a bicycle, a wristwatch or simply invest it in the stock market would you still mention it in here?
Guess what, I bet a large percentage of drug dealers also happen to buy apple products. Should we make a threat for every single ipod bought with cocaine/marijuana/heroine money?
Yes it is sad that people sell part of themselves for money, specially if they use that money for "useless" (and by useless I really meant not top priority such as food, shelter, security....)
This is no different that any other ethical mega-problem concerning transplants, money compensation (for transplants or even for boldily fluids such as blood or semen or BM)
In conclusion: Sad, but no idea why mentioned in first page of MR forums...

You're right, it has nothing to do with Apple. Probably an urban legend anyway. But MacRumors never misses a chance to spread anti-Apple tidbits - it generates clicks, which means money.

Wait...MacRumors is anti-Apple!!?? WTF!!

This kid has graduated from stupid pills to stupid injections.

I don't mean to be cruel, but if he is rendered unable to reproduce, it would be nice to keep his contribution to the world's stupidity out of the gene pool.

Even though it happened in China, it is more an issue of how disgusting and criminal this surgeon could be. Greed has really no nationality, boundaries or professions. Agreed, Apple has nothing to do with it.

Deal… no deal!

I don't know…. a kidney for an iPhone and an iPad? Was it one of the "New iPads" and the 4S? Did it even come with a case? I would have to think twice about that deal. Now throw in a couple cases, along with an i7 iMac and maxed out MacBook air and you've got a deal!

The words "iPhone" and "iPad" are in the title

Thus, Apple-related

Just because someone sticks iPhone and iPad in the title doesn't mean it was a good idea. He probably also bought burger and fries, a pack of smokes and a pair of shoes, but that alone doesn't make a story. Fact is, he sold his organ for money. Just because he decided to spend some of it on an Apple device doesn't make it Apple news.

All I can say is that is seriously disturbing that one would do that.

My question is..is this a minor or a 18+ yr-old? Where the hell are the parents if this is a minor?

It might be stupid, but assuming this story is true I still feel terrible for him.

I was wondering, how long the boy can afford to pay the phone bill and data plan for his iphone? Does he even have an access to wifi? After all he went through, I think he got himself useless iphone and ipad.

What a poor kid. I totally understand how badly he wanted to have them. I feel very bad for him.

Misleading story title. "Charges Filed After Chinese Teenager Sells Kidney to Purchase iPhone and iPad"

Even assuming he is buying the absolute most expensive of these the math works out like this:

5 499 + 6 788 = 12 287

He was paid 22,000
12287 is only 55% of that money, most likely he bought the cheaper models and over half of that money is spent on other things.

Who's giving all these thumbs down? This is a funny story. Losers.

It's not funny, but rather sad. Not for the guy in question, that's just natural selection at work. But sad for humanity as a whole...

No product is worth giving an organ... NONE! Not even with an :apple: on it. A family member, spouse or close friend in need a donor, definitely yes.

I don't understand some the the vote downs, though.

The kids life might have sucked so bad and been so hopeless that he was willing to do something like this to get something once in his life that he could never have gotten otherwise. I'm sure each of us know plenty of people who get depressed and do harmful things to themselves. Yet people on this site mostly complain about the multiple Apple products they own.

He's not an idiot -- but a lot of macrumors commentators are. I can hear some of our prominent high school/college libertarians saying to themselves, "What's the problem? The kid entered in a contract and received the promised compensation?"

Read again. V-e-r-y slowly. I didn't say MacRumors was anti-Apple. I said they post "anti-Apple tidbits" to generate page views and clicks. They make money by pumping up site traffic. Nothing does that like posting anti-Apple stuff on a forum frequented by Apple fans. The trick is to do it while maintaining the "appearance" of neutrality. The story - dubious at best, outright fabrication at worst - obviously has nothing to do with Apple or Apple products. The intent was to bring out trolls who will villify Apple for creating and feeding a consumer culture that values iPads over human life.

P.S. - Assuming some kid DID sell a kidney for money, I can't believe how callous you can be to say those things. There are all kinds of desperate people in the world. Until you have endured their circumstances, you probably can't understand their motivations.

I have no sympathy for this kid, when I was a teenager I knew enough to not sell my organs for apple products so he can hold himself to the same standard. He doesn't deserve to get on a public transplant list because he has no priority over those who lost their organs to real health issues that go beyond being a moron. If someone wants to donate / sell one to him than go for it but beyond that I don't think society has any responsibility to help people who clearly aren't worth helping and did the damage to themselves.
