Great point. I really need to find mine.

I stopped using it because, here in the heart of Texas (that would be AUSTIN ;-), humans need all the coolness coming from the vents, without iPhones blocking the airflow.
I put mine on the outside of the vent so the only air that was behind blocked by the phone wasn’t going to reach my person anyway. It took some experimenting. I’m in SoCal, so we don’t hVe the humidity that you have but it certainly get hot.

so far I can say I use the following when driving: google maps, Spotify/apple podcasts

I did read elsewhere google maps recent update can get the iPhone hot, so deleted and re-installed but its not cured it.

I've also gone back to slower charging in car - my car charger has usb c charging as well as the slower/normal charging. I'm sticking with the slower charging and see how I get on.

Just FYI - I’m overheating while indoors, NOT charging, and just browsing Reddit or watching video on YouTube or something. My phones on iOS 16 get hot often.

Yeah something some posters here aren't realizing is - for the life of my release day 13PM - it has charged cool. No matter if I charged it at 40% or 80% - barely got warm despite using a 30w charger.

Now? iOS 16? It charges hot. Like hot to the touch - similar to if a runaway app was taking all the CPU and it was in the sun hot (but this is indoors - cool room). And any attempt to charge while in the car results in heat warnings - of which I've never got before, ever.

I checked Battery Usage and for the most part it's not an app. A few times Google Photos was taking a bit of background activity. But even charging from 90% to 100% indoors yesterday - the phone gets noticeably warm whereas it never got warm before - even at 99% the phone was warm to the touch (no background activity).

We'll see what happens with 16.1 today. :D

I've had the same overheating message in my car when running only Carplay, Waze, and Spotify. I have a 3-week old iPhone 14, and it's happened on every iteration of iOS 16 so far. I'm currently on 16.0.3. It happens after approximately 1 hour. Car temp isn't hot, and phone is out of direct sun. I do not get any overheating messages when charging normally in the house. Lots of other details I can share if interested.

I just got off the phone with Apple and the guy said turning off "Optimized Battery Charging" might help per his research. I haven't tried it yet and don't take a lot of 1+ hour trips, so I'm just posting here in case it helps someone else.

still getting this issue. its always in the car, not AC/heating on at all, and in a cool climate. I tend to charge overnight as well as I sleep, so no idea if the same issue happens overnight as well. My gut feeling is that the mapping apps are causing it to overheat while the phone is plugged into the charger in the car.

You mean am I using the phone as designed? Yes I might have Google maps on, or Spotify, or podcasts, or Microsoft teams, or on the phone making a call.
I can tell you from personal experience that video calls in MS Teams on iPhone can be quite taxing and possibly overheat your phone if you charge it at the same time.

there’s no dedicated thread for this issue that I could see so I’ll open one.

I get the “Charging on hold - charging will resume when iPhone returns to normal temperature” issue on a regular basis since iOS 16.

Yes I understand the feature and that it’s there for a reason however no one seems to be asking what the cause is. I’ve seen a lot of this issue reported in Reddit and other places but no one is asking themselves why it is happening and why it is happening so much eg some other component causing the overheating, not necessarily the battery at fault. I went to Apple and my battery is fine so it’s not that.

Anyone else have this issue on a regular basis?

Thanks all.
I got this message today for the first time when charging 13x with my 20w power adapter. Phone was neither not (as can happen) or cold. I unplugged it at 99% and I still get this notice. Battery icon at top right of screen is yellow for the first time. I turned off "low power mode" to see if this will make a difference. I just found I am supposed to update to iOS 16.1.2

this is a bug... this notification only appears when the battery is already 80% or over, which is pretty stupid because at that precentage the phone is way more cooler when charging.

If you have a 20w charger pay attention when the phone is arround 25-65% charged, it will get pretty hot if you are using 20w charger, but NO OVERHEAT notifications and the phone just kept charging..

Then at 80% for no reason at all, this "Charging On Hold" notification appear when the phone is way cooler compared to when it is 25%..

Good thing is this bug most likely will be fixed on 16.2. im using 16.2 beta 3 and no longer getting this charging on hold notification

It's normal when the phone has high load and you are charging it. It's not an iphone specific thing, happens to android as well. Phones have relatively powerful hardware, but no active cooling and very limited passive cooling.

I suggest taking it out of the case and putting it on a heat conductive material, or into an airflow.

Also, do not use wireless charging.

It seems to be fixed on 16.1.2. I don't charge until the charge goes below 50%, but I thought 20W was supposed to be for iPhone 13 and above. We'll see how things unfold. Thank you!

I’m suddenly getting this on my iPad Pro 2022. The notification in my settings appeared while it was at 88% and the iPad had a very normal temperature. Not cold not hot, just normal. My charger was also not warm.. And my room was 19c. So not cold and not warm. The sun was not shining, so no direct sunlight. I’m only using the charger and cable that was in the box with the iPad. I think it’s just another bug.. oh and when I took it of the charger it was 88% and then it jumped to 90%.

Edit; I only saw this “charging was on hold” in my battery settings. I haven’t got a notification. That’s why I think it’s a bug, or am I wrong?

I’m still getting this issue. Usually in my car when using Google maps and/or personal hotspot.

iPhone 12 Pro 16.4.1

Charging a hot battery that is above its nominal voltage is bad for its longevity. Fastest way to kill a battery actually. This feature just prevents exacerbating that.

You are running two high current apps (sustained).

A lithium batteries internal resistance is increased when above 80%. If its internal resistance is high enough the batteries voltage will dip as the apps power consumption spikes. Those dips in power are not only stressful on the battery but are converting the electricity to heat inside the battery.

iOS can detect that and with iOS 16 it prevents adding to the batteries demise. The benefit is not only that it helps converse the batteries longevity but it does need to use other core limiting functions as often, like throttling the SoC, dimming the screen, reducing power consumption to the cellular radio, etc...

Update on this. Went to see apple again.

They did a deep dive into some diagnostics. No hardware issues at all. This has to be a software thing. I suspect data (5G) use for mapping or music/podcasts is pushing up the phone temperature. This really only started happening on ios16 and I don't remember it happening before that.

My battery health after over 550 charge cycles is 95%

just an update, this is happening to me a lot now, daily.

so its clearly not the battery.

more likely its the device getting hot by some other means, such as GPS/data, which means iOS stops any charging activity (even below 80% - nothing to do with optimised charging) until the device cools down.

I'm worried that there's a hardware issue (not battery) to do with the GPS chip/data chip.

generally speaking the battery is doing well

Only just seen this thread.

I've never had a "charging on hold" warning but I've had the "iPhone needs to cool down" message once or twice while charging (in very hot conditions).
