OpenAI has expanded the capabilities of its ChatGPT app for macOS, adding support for Apple Notes and a range of popular third-party apps. The update builds on last month's release that introduced the ability to read on-screen content from select Mac apps.

This expansion should broaden ChatGPT's utility for both casual users and developers using macOS, as the AI assistant can now interact with content in Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip, alongside numerous development environments including BBEdit, Android Studio, and various JetBrains IDEs.

For developers, the update also adds support for additional IDEs including VSCode forks (VSCodium, Cursor, WindSurf) and terminal apps like Prompt and Warp. The AI can analyze code from multiple apps simultaneously, offering suggestions for improvements without manual copy-pasting.

OpenAI says that users maintain full control over which apps ChatGPT can access, and all data handling follows the same OpenAI privacy protocols as the app's regular conversation history. The expanded app integration feature remains exclusive to paid subscribers, including ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users.

To get ChatGPT working with apps, enable the Work with Apps option in ChatGPT ➝ Settings and allow the necessary permissions via Manage Apps. Then you can access ChatGPT within supported apps in the following way:
  1. With ChatGPT open, open a supported app (such as Apple Notes).
  2. Press Option + Shift + 1 to invoke the ChatGPT bar.
  3. Type queries or use advanced voice mode for hands-free interaction.
The advanced voice mode is especially useful in this context, since it allows you to speak handsfree to ChatGPT and get suggestions or modifications to your on-screen content. OpenAI recently demonstrated the feature using a holiday party planning scenario, where ChatGPT provided song recommendations and party ideas using a Santa voice persona.

The ChatGPT app for macOS is available for download from OpenAI's website.

Yes, of course GPT can have access to all my journals, my inner most thoughts. See for yourself, GPT, all my terrible life decisions laid out before your cores. I turn it all over to you….. with each new decision (soup or salad?) and regret (soup), my new quiet prayer muttered, “GPT take the wheel…..I can’t fix this.”

It would be great to have Obsidian integration, as it has become my main note-taking app, completely replacing Notion that asked me to be always online. Although not as versatile as Notion, with Obsidian I can comfortably access, edit and work on all my notes offline, and let it sync again whenever I regain internet connection.

By the way, about the Mac chatGPT app, I EXPECT it to need permission from macOS itself. I don’t fully trust chatGPT app settings and I would much prefer to have the permission for reading my Apple Notes (which contain personal information) disabled from the operating system settings itself.

This is so dangerous, you dont even know until a few years later.

5 years later Macrumors Article:

ChatGPT accidentally hoarded hundred of millions of Apple user data during introduction to Apple Ecosystem. Promises to delete and not use data.

Spoiler: Data is still being used cause it expired and jumping through law loopholes.

WHAT? Have you tried it or are you just guessing?

If true, I’m starting to get fed up of EU restrictions on AI and Apple features such as iPhone Mirroring…
1/ He was guessing, it's available for me in Belgium.
2/ The fact that AI isn't available in the EU, is because Apple is trying to strongarm the EU. The fact they've already announced they'll bring it out in april 2025 shows this too. I'm not saying all regulation is perfect or even good, but blindly going along with what corporations say and just letting them strongarm legislation to meet their desire, leads to pretty bad outcomes. If you like to know why, look up the history of antitrust laws and look at the trend to move to subscriptions where devices are not owned but rented.
