I've never seen consumers/reviewers so excited to receive notifications. Its interesting.

I wish reviewers had more in depth things to demo like AOD with DI, landscape mode and incoming/ongoing calls etc. Everyone's trying to be first to put out a video of everything that was demo'd in the keynote.

I've used a privacy screen protector with every phone since the 5. I look forward to the day there's a pixel shift privacy feature that makes it harder to see from different angles.

It's an extremely well-thought-out UI and UX feature that cleverly hides a hardware-required cutout. It's very Apple and a really nice way to blur the lines of hardware and software. Once you use it, you'll love it.
It's not extremely well thought out. It is ridiculous. It's simply a gimmicky way to display a menu bar. Essentially, that's all it is, a menu bar. Same as any menu bar, you click/tap on a menu item, and it then does what it does.

All OS's have built in standard behaviour that programmers can use to easily program in the usual functions. Such as adding a "menu" object to the "menu bar" object, and "menu item" objects to the "menu" objects, and assigning functions that run when the menu items are clicked. However, programmers don't have to follow this standard behaviour, they can always program in more complex behaviour, such as what Apple have added to this iOS "menu bar".

Here's the thing, there is no reason at all why you would need the pill, rather than the notch, or neither (e.g. with the iPhone SE), in order for this functionality to work. It's just a freaking menu bar, and all iPhones have one. It's simply that Apple with previous iOS versions have had the menu bar so dumbed down that it isn't even clickable, but is simply a passive display of things such as battery life and connection bars. So this "dynamic island" rubbish could work on any iPhone, it's simply a case of Apple deciding to allow the functionality or not. But instead, they have an if-statement in the code that says "if phone is >= 14Pro, then let-them-use-dynamic-island(), else these-plebian-losers-can-stick-to-the-old-passive-menu()"

I haven’t used the DI yet but it looks clever, and it’s tempting me to plump for the pro model.

My 2 concerns are:

  • How much does it impact one-handed usage? Having to reach all the way up to the top of the phone all of the time seems like it would be annoying.
  • How well does it work with a screen protector?

Actually, already do; S10e. Love the size of the phone as it's not monster sized like nearly all current iPhones (and nearly all Android phones). Headphone jack, fingerprint scanner on the power button (jesus, how is this not done more often, its such an obvious spot to put the scanner!), microSD card, great cameras (even if 'dated') excellent video quality. My only gripe with the phone is the selfie camera; it's not wide angle. In fact, seems like nearly all phones have a stupid focal length for selfies. I had a Sony XZ1 Compact before this phone and I could easily get amazing and fun photos of me and my girlfriend with the entire background behind us. Now? I have to flip the phone around and use the rear cameras and HOPE the photo is framed right.

Honestly, there's no such thing as a great smartphone. I miss my Sony XZ1C, but it had it's flaws; no wifi calling, lack of certain LTE bands for my carrier, no OIS, difficult to type on and poor photo quality with only one focal length on the rear camera. I used it for over 4 years though, the size was TRULY a compact phone and one handed uses was actually doable and easy, even with longer fingers.

I just don't understand why manufacturers can't make a compact phone with near flagship specs. I can't imagine owning a new iPhone and trying to cram it into my pocket and then walking around with a stupid bulge. Embarrassing.
I forgot bout my S10e, I have it somewhere, it's a great little phone. The only reason I switch to iPhone is because I picked up a refurbished iPhone 11 last year for $24. The iPhone 11 was too big so I got a 13 mini for a very good price, if it had a headphone jack it would be the perfect phone.

I was becoming more excited about the island as I saw more of the features, but now I am starting to lose interest in it. The reason is I don’t like the long press idea, especially since every viewer has to push it while it’s on a table. Long pressing to the top of the phone is not going to be at all comfortable when you can’t reach the top of the phone unless you’re using another hand. I’m sure the long press was some thing that apps like Spotify really pushed for because they fear losing drawing people towards their app.

From the videos I've seen, it looks like the dynamic island hides the WiFi indicator when it expands? I don't care for this much, I always want to know if I'm on WiFi or not, and if I'm on WiFi I generally don't care about cellular signal strength which still seems to show.

Is this configurable at all?
It’s the GSM signal that’s being hidden.
I just checked.

FYI - phone activation problems have nothing to do with Dynamic Island, so I'm not sure why you raised it here. I can understand some people may take some time to adjust to the new paradigm shift in mobile computing. I'm confident 99.99% of all users will grow to love Dynamic Island.

Pretty sure „paradigm shift in mobile computing“ is a far fetch for a feature like the DI.

Developing the dynamic island means that the pill and hole are here to stay as opposed to placing everything underscreen

Am I the only one that expected imessage notifications to work with the dynamic island?? My disappointment was huge when the banner came underneath the island taking up even more space than it ever had. What the hell??

Honestly, wouldn't it be more aptly named: The Dynamic Black Hole?
I do wonder what other terminology was bandied around before they settled on Dynamic Island...

Ineractive Splodge

Mutating Infobar

Shape-shifting Camera Closet

If you want to interact with it, it does impact one handed usage. But you can just as easily not interact with it and solely treat it as a notification, in which case it does not affect one handed use.

It works perfectly with a screen protector. I got one which covers the entire screen including the dynamic island (ie there is no cutout on the protector for a notch as in previous years).

Hope that helps :)

It's great and multitasking is real multitasking. Crease is non issues when on axis. Awesome device, even comes with usb c.

It good that you are happy with it. I personally found it cool initially, but quickly became very underwhelmed. If Sammy has released something like dynamic island it would have been half ass done like most of their new features. Just throw crap out there and see what sticks. You know who does the QR.... There customers. Apple ain't no angel by any means, they are lead by greed and the all might profit. We all just buy what we prefer and it's good to have competition.

DI looks like a fun concept in principle, whether it's actually useful I'll probably be unable to test for another few years since it's not coming to my 13 Mini. If you, like me, are considering jumping to the SE line going forward you probably won't get to use it for even longer.

I think there's a risk of fragmentation of the user experience across the different iPhone lines going forward. The DI doesn't need a cutout to make sense as a way to interact with your phone, but I'm not sure it would have been designed this way otherwise and it's difficult to bring to the notched iPhones.

It'll be curious to see how Apple will handle this in future years. Personally the DI is not enough to even start to tempt me to buy a Pro. All my hardware needs are met and what I care most about now are software improvements. We shall see, of course, but if it became more common for it to take years before iOS innovations filter out into the cheaper phones, it might become easier to actually lose interest.

Yep....because they don't have a large cutout. But I'm sure they'll figure out away to copy it with their hole punch.

Wasn’t iPhone 15 or 16 rumoured to have just a hole punch?
Maybe Samsung will wait and see and then copy it.
