I actually looked back further than 6 months. It turns out that only 1 out of 12 months did I use less than 2GB. My phone is jailbroken but most of the data I use is not specific to the jailbreak and I use tethering RARELY. Even if I did not jailbreak, my data usage would still be this high with legitimate usage.
QUOTE]

For you and other that have a JB phone and are not really tethering are you multitasking? If no, then what is it you are doing that is using so much data usage?

I am curious since it seems those that JB are the ones using the higher end of the spectrum.

I think the stats on 65% users with less than 200MB usage and 95% users less than 2GB are skewed with people that have wifi access on work and/or school. I look at my usage, and other than the first month of having the iPhone, my usage are consistently at least 300MB per month. What's my usage? Email and social networking, what normal people would do too. I never stream music, don't have Pandora, never watch youtube via 3G nor any video streaming, etc. I always download my app, songs, podcasts, via iTunes instead of 3G. If I start downloading podcasts directly on my iPhone, using video streaming etc, I can see reaching more than 2GB easily.
I was waiting for the option of tethering, and even if I had to pay extra, as long as it remains "unlimited" with soft cap, I would not mind, but now the 2GB hard cap is obviously too limiting when coupled with tethering.

This low caps will dial back our usage pattern of smartphones. We'll return to just checking text emails only instead of VOIP/video chat and multimedia streming.

I don't understand how some people are only using ~200MB of data. Everyone I know who works listens to pandora/streaming radio with their phones. Assuming they do this ~5 hours a day 5 days a week 4 weeks a month that is A LOT of data. That doesn't even include the 3 hour+ baseball games I have going while at work. I think those telling us to "go out and get some air" need to start using their phones for more than email checking...

Stopping watching baseball at work and focus on your job.

Why is there a fee to use tethering? It doesn't matter which device uses the data plan.

We need a new kind of "data providing" company. One that doesn't care if the data is VoIP, data, SMS, tethering, etc.

Of course it maters! You can't surf the web on a little chicken sh... screen of the iphone like you can when it's tethered to a computer.

I have to have this new data plan if I want tethering? That is pretty messed up... If I pay $20 for tethering does it include additional data, because I certainly will use more then 200mb if I tether.

Bye Bye AT&T and iPhone. I'll keep my data plan as is and move on when it is convenient for me.

free wifi everywhere. every starbucks and mcdonalds. if you have cable internet than you can get free wifi from them as well. set up your iphone with free wifi hotspot profiles and watch your 3G usage drop

I noticed a surge in mine when i started messing with the Slingplayer app... Still never went over 1GB though. Since I'm always on WIFI at home or at Work.
Interesting.

I really wanted tethering though and it looks like it would cost me at least $15 more per month to have that option, but I wouldn't use it all the time, so it's definitely not worth it. Kind of sucks really.

So am I reading this right?
On the iPhone new tiered data plan it's $15 for 200 MB but on the iPad it's $15 for 250 MB???
Why the 50 MB difference or am I getting something wrong?
I just ordered an iPad 3G so I am curious why the difference?

So this seems to make Jailbreaking and tethering the way to go

Keep your unlimited, I average 1-1.4 gigs a month jailbreak and save $15 a month for tethering!

I agree with most people here why add a tethering charge to the 2 gig plan?

Simply a way collect an extra fee. I know other carriers do it but that doesn't make it right.

Some tech savvy Congressman is going to get pisser and ask for an investigation. I hope.....

You shouldn't direct all your anger towards AT&T, but also to the mighty greedy Apple and Mr. Jobs...

If you haven't noticed, and based on these responses you have not, the iPad wireless packages still offer unlimited 3G for $29.95 per month. But, you can no longer get that with your iPhone.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/

So, if you think about it, this is a power move by Apple and Jobs to get those who wants unlimited data (and want to tether) to forgo using their iPhone as a means to get their data via their phones and (already purchased) laptops, but through the iPad instead.

Therefore, this is a way for Apple to justify the consumer bringing a third Apple device with them. And, AT&T is more than happy to have the iPhone/iPad user pay $25 a month for phone data, and $30 a month for pad data every month.

A lot of people are wondering why the need an iPad. Well, to get unlimited mobile data of course...

The best part for old Jobby Boy, Job-a the Hut, is that everyone is blaming AT&T.

Hey, its a clear money grab for everybody. No different than anyone else. But, it just really grinds my gears when we pretend that Apple is better than any other company. The past 90 days should have shown us that they are not.

Well, it's not true actually - the iPad will also see this change in data. The rest of what you say, based on speculation, is just your mind meandering to benefit your bias.

You can get 3GB for $35 a month under this new plan. Only $5 more than current unlimited plan. .

sweet... i get LESS data for MORE money! but hey, he says it's not expensive!

why not compare things that are actually the same... like to get back to the 5gig i have now (NOT 3gig, thanks) it costs $55. only $25 more than the current plan!

you sure convinced me with your math!

of what... well, i'm not sure. that you don't like to compare like things?

making everyone pay more for less isn't generally going to be too popular. just saying.

I tend to use WiFi whenever possible, I still thought I had to be using a ton of data but I checked and I've only used 1.2 GB in a year.

There are the same number of comcast high speed internet subscribers that hardly use their internet connection other than for checking a few emails and some youtube videos once a week.

In fact, most 90% of iPhone users rarely use their device for anything but phone calling, a few text messaging if any at all, and some minor web browsing. It's just a hip device to have - and I know this because two people I know who have iPhone's don't even text message on them let alone rack up more than 50MB worth of data a month.

I'd say with the number of apps sold, there's something else people are doing besides texts, email, and minor web browsing. It's not "just a hip device to have", it's just an awesome device to have even without the network connectivity, hence the iPod Touch.

Think I may have found a solution to getting Unlimited data with new iPhone 4G contracts...

Earlier today, I called *DATA# to check up on how much data I have used this month. I then installed an app from Cydia called "3G Unrestrictor", which makes apps think that I'm using WiFi instead of being on 3G. Then I downloaded 140MB of apps from the App Store. Called *DATA# again, and there is no change in data usage from when I dialed before! AT&T must register that I'm on WiFi also!

So could this be a solution to get around this 2GB cap?

Open your eyes people!!! This really stinks for those who actually enjoy using the web aspect of their iPhone. Such things as streaming content like internet radio and video will be compromised.

In my view, AT&T is pulling a fast one on all of us. This seemingly benign restructuring advertised as saving you money is actually a sneaky attempt to maximize profit with the 4g iPhone and vid chat and all its other goodies. These new terms are completely unacceptable for the consumer.

You would be foolish to think that your data usage will remain the same in the future. AT&T is screwing up the iPhone and, in my opinion, making it less and less desirable.

Why did Apple get sucked into the AT&T vortex! Why Steve!?!

There is a delay in the calculation of data usage. It can be as much as 5 days I believe.

Do you really think that AT&T wouldn't know you are using their network because your phone is tricking Apps into thinking it is on Wifi? Chalk it up to the bit eating fairies I suppose...

You assume we don't use those features.

I have wireless internet at work, at home, and at every friend's house where I spend any time. So any time I need to stream radio, etc., I'm on a wireless network. I'd say that 85-90% of my life is spent in a wireless zone.

You can tell that I got my slingbox for my birthday in April. Just in time for baseball season.

I really do have to upgrade so I can tether though, I want the Mac Mini in my car to be on the net, ha

Good thing i'm grandfathered in.

I'm pulling this by streaming radio 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, and i DO NOT tether. I'm shocked.

What's the point of network speed upgrades when all it serves to do is get you up and over the data cap faster?
