You shouldn't direct all your anger towards AT&T, but also to the mighty greedy Apple and Mr. Jobs...

If you haven't noticed, and based on these responses you have not, the iPad wireless packages still offer unlimited 3G for $29.95 per month. But, you can no longer get that with your iPhone.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/

So, if you think about it, this is a power move by Apple and Jobs to get those who wants unlimited data (and want to tether) to forgo using their iPhone as a means to get their data via their phones and (already purchased) laptops, but through the iPad instead.

Therefore, this is a way for Apple to justify the consumer bringing a third Apple device with them. And, AT&T is more than happy to have the iPhone/iPad user pay $25 a month for phone data, and $30 a month for pad data every month.

A lot of people are wondering why the need an iPad. Well, to get unlimited mobile data of course...

The best part for old Jobby Boy, Job-a the Hut, is that everyone is blaming AT&T.

Hey, its a clear money grab for everybody. No different than anyone else. But, it just really grinds my gears when we pretend that Apple is better than any other company. The past 90 days should have shown us that they are not.

They should have just made a "DataUltimate" or something plan with unlimited data+tethering for $60. Let people stay grandfathered on their $30 unlimited plans, sure, but they should definitely at least have SOME option remaining for new customers who want unlimited data.

I'm sure I'll get branded a "fanboy" by the rabid ones.....

I logged onto AT&T and looked at my account for my 3G iPhone. Over the last 6 month period I averaged 153 mb of data. The highest was 201 and the lowest was 100. Last month....when I got my 3G iPad....it dropped to 134.

I'm sorry....but those of you burning 2..3...4...gig of data need to put the phone down and go out and get some sun and fresh air. Go enjoy life and get out from behind your phone, get off your butt and go do something constructive. Seriously!

Climbs down off of soap box...

Here is my plan:

Switch my iPhone 3G plan to the $15 for 200mb.

Swithch my iPad 3G plan from the 250mb plan to the unlimited....which I did this morning.

And the best part....Buy new "4G" iPhone when it comes out an put it on the 200mb plan. I was having trouble justifying the new phone....until these changes. Not because I can't afford the data plan....I can....I just couldn't mentally justify it since I'm using my iPad WAY more than my iPhone. Carry in in a man bag and it goes with me everywhere. :D

The thing that I find the funniest is those who say "This is great because it will help the network by limiting the power users and making them pay more."

No it won't. We're all still here, and we're keeping our unlimited. It will stop new power users from coming onboard, but they're not the ones slowing down your network. So you're hopes of faster speeds are little more than a pipe dream.

Except for the one month I downloaded 6 torrents (while on vacation) I use around the 200MB mark... I suspect a good number of people use just over 200MB which is why there is nothing between 200MB and 2,000MB....

It makes no sense to me that there isn't a 30 dollar option for 5GB's of data. Or if we buy the 200MB one, why can't we pay 10 dollars more for 2GBs if we go over?

OK, so the AT&T FAQ says you can switch between data plans whenever you want... although once you switch off unlimited it's gone. Fine. My question is what happens if say you are 10 days into your billing cycle on the 200MB plan and you hit 190MB. Can you then switch to 2GB for that billing cycle? I mean, it's $10 for 1.8GB at that point vs. $15 for another 200MB. On the iPad this wasn't an issue because there wasn't a true billing cycle.

I'm guessing that any switch would take affect the next billing cycle rather than immediately but I figured I'd ask....

It's all here.

My bill will go down a lot! All the info is here....do not rely on rumors:

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/data-plans.jsp

Here is an extract from that website regarding auto-notices:

"It's easy to know how much data you've used.

AUTOMATIC NOTICES – We'll send you a courtesy text and an email after you've reached 65%, 90%, and 100% of your data usage for the month.

CALL – Dial *DATA#(*3282#) from your wireless phone. We'll send you a free text message with your usage info.

CLICKView your usage on your computer or phone. Visit att.com/mywireless and log in to your account, or access your info directly on your phone with the myWireless app."

I think I need to stay on the unlimited plan. Hovering around 1.5 gig average but 1.7 is getting really close to the 2g cap. Streaming my Sirius-XM is really a data hog, plus with new features coming there is the possiblity for more usage.

this problem and conversations are so outdated. At&t is so outdated, as most of the stuff that is been sold in the USA now a days.

I used to teethering with my windows phone over a vodafone network in germany 3 years ago at 3g speeds.

I did not have to pay any other internet services. I just paid 30 euros a month flat internet (up to 5GB) and 25 a month for 300 minutes talk (there you do not pay for incoming calls) After the 5GB were over the connection would switch to gprs speed (Edge I guees) but no extra charge.

I used up all 5gb within 20 15 days because of heavy use. So if you plan to use the 2GB as the mothership for all your connections, then it will not work.

2GB just for phone use is ok. Nevertheless is should be offered at 15$ a month not a 25 a month. That is a rip off.

Things are changed by actions not by talking. There should be a massive cancellation of att contracts. After a day or 2 you would see how ATT would back down.

20 or 25 or 30 it is just too much. Especially if you think that the ipad is not subsidized and you have to pay 300 for the iphone.

Regardless. of 2million ipad sold lets assume that 500 thousand have 3g at 30 a month. that is 15 million $ a month. or 180 million a year.

that seems a lot right?..... Now compare it to the 129billions they made last year..... So total revenue from IPAD is not even 0.02% .... DO you think they really care about you??????? The only think the IPAD does for them is add extra traffic to their already outdated network.

So instead of using the money they've been collecting on data plans to upgrade their system to handle the bandwidth, they're screwing everyone by capping the usage. But their giving unlimited access at AT&T hotspots, so that's what...only AT&T stores? And why do people continue to stay in their contracts with this company?

starbucks, mcdonalds, barnes&noble, just to name a few use AT&T wifi. The only thing that's on contract is the voice plan, data plans are all month to month. I've checked my usage history and I haven't gone past 1.7GB. If I can save $5 a month, I'm all for it. Besides, 3G is excruciatingly slow for me now. With 12 Mbps U-verse internet at home, 3G feels like GPRS!

It is good they are doing this data cap. It will clear out the abusers and not let the network get overloaded. The other phone companies will do the same thing.

I am pleased that the monthly fee will drop. Maybe in the future, we'll use more than 2 gigs of data a month, but that is not the case now, and I prefer to spend less to get more than I need, than to spend more and not have a current use for it.

You took the words right outta my mouth! :D

Which means that AT&T will have to add capacity to their network and that costs money. Why should I, who topped out at 500 MB during the busiest of the last 6 months, have to pay more so that AT&T can build a network that you can use to video sext your GF hourly?

Those who want to use more of the service should pay more. That's just fair. Until now, those who don't make such heavy use of the network have been subsidizing those who do. I say, screw that.

Never side with telecom companies. You are the one getting screwed over at the end. They make a ton of money regardless if you used their data or not. They will pass the costs of upgrading their network onto you and all of their network subscribers regardless.

AT&T is a sh*tacular telecom company. But I can see how this will bring in even more subscribers. Now making a VOICE CALL will be impossible. Forget the data services, there will be so many new subscribers, making a voice call will be much more difficult!

It is good they are doing this data cap. It will clear out the abusers and not let the network get overloaded. The other phone companies will do the same thing.

that's not correct actually:

if 98% of AT&T data users never go over 2GB/month, that means only 2% does.

So how do you explain how 2% of the users that go over 2GB/month screw the 98% over? I don't understand how AT&T thinks 2% populace will cripple their network.

Hahaha. How could you have missed my post just 6 above yours?

All of us on unlimited plans are going to keep them. Expect no better service than you're already getting.

A reasonable rate for the new plans would have been:

1. 100MB plan: $10 for the first 100MB, $5 for each additional 100MB
2. 1GB plan: $20 for the first 1GB, $5 for each additional GB

These plans would cost exactly the same as what is being offered by AT&T for 200MB and 2GB usage levels, but they would be much more practical (and attractive) for light and medium/heavy users of bandwidth. Yes, using 5GB would cost $40 instead of $30, that would only be a moderate (and arguably fair) rate increase for bandwidth hoggers who are most likely to shift to using more WiFi and less 3G as a result...

+1, especially when you look at the AT&T data connect prices.

If you look at the dataconnect prices on AT&T, when using 3G cellular service for your computer, it costs $35.00 for the same 200mb and $60 for 5GB. Seeing how they discount the $35.00 for iphone users they should have had plans going all the way up to 5GB but at a reduced cost of lets say $40 you mentioned above. Or make the 2GB the highest plan with $5.00 blocks for ea 1GB all the way up to 5GB. Since you can technically tether the computer, using a dataconnect plan, to any other wifi device tethering should have been part of the iphone/ipad plan from 2GB and up.

This would have been a home run for AT&T and get most to switch off the unlimited plan, which is obviously the goal. People would be more apt to switch if they feel like they do get an additional feature in return.

Other options I would have liked to have seen are shared family plan data or as others mentioned rollover MB.

Check your Data

I consider myself a power user I am on my Droid constantly, but the most I have ever used in a month was 600 Mb of data!!!

I work for a wireless company and from looking at customers bills I have never seen 1 customer go over 1 gb of data.

There is NO way im changing my unlimited. Just look at my usage for Jan. lol

Show me a Utility (Gas, Electric, Water) that has an unlimited plan? Would you want that? Would you want everyone to pay the same monthly costs if you use a lot less than the average user?

It does not make sense.....and it doesn't make sense in wireless networking either. I do not want to pay for anyone else's service.

Well, that's correct to a certain extent. We are talking about smartphones like the iPhone here. If you limit the bandwidth on a device such as the iPhone, you are limiting the experience.

all the video calls, video texts, streaming audio, all that can be gone now. The point is, there is no more unlimited for $30. You can't even get unlimited even if you wanted to pay for it!

Had my iPad for 16 days. Used about 225MB of 3G. This is a money saver for everyone who doesn't use 3G to stream video.

I don't understand how some people are only using ~200MB of data. Everyone I know who works listens to pandora/streaming radio with their phones. Assuming they do this ~5 hours a day 5 days a week 4 weeks a month that is A LOT of data. That doesn't even include the 3 hour+ baseball games I have going while at work. I think those telling us to "go out and get some air" need to start using their phones for more than email checking...

There are the same number of comcast high speed internet subscribers that hardly use their internet connection other than for checking a few emails and some youtube videos once a week.

In fact, most 90% of iPhone users rarely use their device for anything but phone calling, a few text messaging if any at all, and some minor web browsing. It's just a hip device to have - and I know this because two people I know who have iPhone's don't even text message on them let alone rack up more than 50MB worth of data a month.
