For a major carrier, this is quite embarrassing. You wouldn't see ANY major carrier anywhere doing this.

True enough. With our penchant for lawsuits, any 'actual product' deviation from what was shown on the preorder page, despite small print caveats, could be grounds for legal action, and in addition to cancelled preorders and major embarassment, as well as the wrath of Apple, that could get very expensive for any US carrier who dared any such preorder page.

To what extent did MacRumors validate this? The website linked to is 189.ch, and that does not appear to be the *official* China Telecom website. Looking at the WHOIS information, this site appears to be owned by an individual, and is only using the China Telecom branding to look official. My best guess is that this is a knock-off website.

Awaiting validations...

MacRumors has done its readers a disservice by posting this. It doesn't appear to be the official China Telecom, but the jury is still out on that....

A lot of Chinese websites use numbers for their URLs. 189.cn is China Telecom's website. Just like 10086.cn is China Mobile's website. China Unicom is 10010.com.

Edit: If you look at the WHOIS information for 189.cn (not ch) you will see that it is indeed China Telecom's site.

Different animal, IMO.

iPod touch is not a flagship product. Putting a protruding camera lens on an iPhone would take away from its sleekness and style, and would damage the product in the eyes of a much larger market, where Apple spends a lot of its time indirectly criticizing the competition's aesthetics. The iPod Touch has no direct competition.

Design typically rules at Apple, and the engineers are then required to build to the design. If Ive is willing to allow product thinness to cause a protruding camera lens, he is truly suffering from design anorexia, and needs professional counseling.

Just my $.02.
So design only matters to Apple for "flagship" products? Is that why the iPod touch design was also applied to iPads?

I went past a T-Mobile shop in Germany today, and they also advertised with a sign that "fresh fruit" is coming soon and that they are accepting reservations. No fake renderings though.

if the battery and the screen resolution are not fake - 4.7" phone will be very good phone....

Why are folks so impatient.

$$$

This is ... legal to do?

U.S. laws & rules are not global laws & rules.

I'm sorry. I am just finding it very difficult to believe that Apple would sell an iPhone with a protruding lens as long as Jony Ive is still breathing.

I would bet that Ive is the dominant driver of "thinner" and would lay fault/praise that it was he that chose thinner over flush.

I am so glad Apple doubled down on security this year. Just think of how many leaks there would be if they didn't!

But I heard from a Chinese friend, iPhones are not selling well in China. :D

If it sells to only 0.5% of the population it still sells millions.

Edit: Also don't forget Asians love big phones, and the iPhone 6 is not out yet, and
the majority of Chinese can't afford an iPhone

This sort of thing could stop Apple from supplying iPhones to these carriers.

Why so late China? You should've start taking preorders for iPhone 7 already

Not sure if anybody knows this, but if you follow the link to the actual page and click the "pre-order" link, it gives you an option for a 4.7" size AND a 5.5" size...

Has anyone seen 1080p lately?

well the phones just won't stack like that... that protruding lens just won't let it

They will stack from one side but you're correct that it won't at the other end. Top left corner of the phone in the image would be expected to show a steeper angle showing more of the screen in that top left region.
