Oh yes, this is essentially what I wanted! I was thinking 11.5" but this would do. I'm hoping we can get the 12.9" UI scale in this device. Let's do some math:

12.9" resolution: 2732 x 2048
@3X retina: 4098 x 3072

What I'm hoping for:
~11.2" iPad Pro "4K" at 4098 x 3072: 458 PPI

iPhone X PPI: 458 PPI (Apple sometimes likes to keep PPIs across devices, especially if this thing ends up with an OLED, but in all likelihood I don't see that happening until the generation after this new one)

iPad Pro 10.5" physical dimensions: 9.8" x 6.8" = ~11.9" diagonal to work with and contain ~11.2" display

iPad Pro 10.5" display dimensions: 8.4 x 6.3 = 10.5" diagonal

iPad Pro "4K" 11.2" display dimensions: ~9 x ~6.7 = ~11.2" diagonal

Top and bottom bezel: 0.4" (enough to contain Face ID sensors, camera, etc)

Side bezels: 0.05" (basically none, though I've been rounding some, so it might be up to 0.1", it's all hypothetical anyway, or maybe they'll make it just slightly wider like the iPhone X and so that people have to rebuy accessories).

Alternatively, they could "upgrade" the 10.5" to 2732 x 2048 and the ~326 PPI would be the same as the iPhone 8.

Another option is to scale up the 10.5" resolution by roughly the increase in size to 11" to maintain PPI and then take that @3X gives you nearly the same 401 PPI as the iPhone 8 Plus.

Anyone else come up with something better?
In terms of size, you’re correct, it’ll be roughly 11.25”. But....

You are forgetting that the aspect ratio will be changing to around 3:2 rather than 4:3. That will explain your incorrect bezel calculations, and also mean that the resolution would be different to achieve an iPhone X pixel density. Having a 458ppi (or even just 326ppi) would be brilliant but I think that’s something they will do with the move to OLED.

Going to Uni? I’ll be the party pooper and say that a regular ole laptop, albeit not as cool, may be a better choice. :) unless you have one or an iMac already.

I’m switching my workflow to an IPP buyback I’m an auThor and that’s just my portable writing machine with some video editing. Even then, I can’t see myself without a regular old fashioned computer as well.

Just something to think about. Maybe the new MBA and the cheap uocoming iPad MAY be a better combi for college.

Excellent advice. I agree. For the price of a full iPad Pro configuration (iPP+ASK+Pencil) one could buy an MBA + basic iPad + stylus. For college/university, a macOS (desktop or notebook) device is a must.

Actually, I’m completing my Masters degree (just learned I aced my last class!) and graduate in June. My hubby told me over the weekend that he “may or may not” get the 2018 iPP as my graduation gift. I was already talking about replacing my current Air 2 a while ago and since the new Pro should come out in June, the timing is right.

I went through school with a 15” MacBook Pro (owned already before starting), a Windows laptop (bought later to replace a desktop that died), and my Air 2 (also owned before starting). Overkill, but they all got their use. I still appreciate the advice however. Coming from an Air 2, I’m looking forward to making use of the features I’ve been without.

And that’s what I get for assumption. Hahaha. The avaerage age in MR has been, erm, trending lower these days and I thought you were graduating HS!!!

Congrats on the masters enjoy the IPP

Apple really can’t figure out what screen dimensions they want
Ipad 9.7 (for a few years)
Then tries iPad mini 7.8
Then decides they don’t really like it so they don’t update it like ever (probably dead)
Release a 12.9 ipad because why not
Then a 10.5 to replace the 9.7

then no....10.5 isn’t cool. 11 inches is right size

They do seem pretty confused and without a real clear vision. Especially if you take recent reports about infighting and management issues seriously.

Personally though as someone who has a 12.9 and wants a little smaller but not quite as small as the current one, i would love the hell out of an 11 inch pro. Perfect size in my opinion

120Hz is absolutely not a gimmick. It makes scrolling, animations and input feel buttery smooth. ProMotion is the best upgrade to Apple displays since retina.

OLED has better blacks but I’m not a fan of the color. Always looks oversaturated to me. iPad Pro already supports HDR.
It is a gimmick, and essentially on a tablet that can't actually play serious games. Most of the time spent on a tablet is reading and watching, not scrolling. OLED is definitely a more significant upgrade because it enhances every aspect of the experience.

I have to wonder why both of you are acting like Pro-Motion is just the 120hz and not also the dynamically adjusting refresh rate.

ProMotion enhances every aspect of the experience. It’s so nice to use that it makes me prefer my iPad to my MBP or phone. Do you have an iPad Pro?

Seems more like speculation than a rumour
10.5 already has fairly slim side bezels - possibly more limited in reduction with a larger tablet form factor. If they reduced bezels even more could you fit an 11” without changing the aspect ratio (something I think they will try to avoid unlike Iphone)

If they get to 11” what will they do with the 12.9? Retire it, reduce physical size by reducing bezels to make it slightly more portable but break compatibility with ASK etc, or put a larger screen in the same physical chassis to maintain accessory compatibility and keep differentiation from the 10.5/11”?

My opinion ONE pro gets the X treatment. Making a new line. The 10.5 with a slightly larger chassis to give us a 11.3 call it the iPad X. Old style bodies stuck around like the 8 and 8 plus last year. After a year we are an iPad X+

Option 2 is that they get them both. The little one goes to 11.3 and is the mass market premium iPad. The 12.9 juat goes edge to edge for an even larger screen 14? And ends up being a niche product.

But who knows? There’s multiple rumors out about WWDC what they will actually do? We’re all guessing. Not that far. In a month we should see solid leaks

And without OLED you get significantly worse black levels and color. 120hz is a gimmick when it comes to tablets, because movies aren't at 120hz and neither is reading text.

You actually haven't tried it huh. WTH are you even talking about, you think reality has a refresh rate, you 100% see a diff from 60 to 120hz and it shows when you draw too.

In a mobile display that almost always is under some lights, OLED is not much of an advantage because glare and reflectivity of the panel is much more important in reaching a 0 level black.

You also kind of occult the existence of dynamic range. When there is ambient lights, you can compensate for zero never being able to be really zero by providing and ability to not crush the top end of the luminosity.

Contrast by say having a 2000 nits LED display versus having a 700nits in the case of OLED (only in exceptional cases and short periods can it stay at its highest level on just small parts of the screen).

A place OLED has advantages is if you watch say TV, a film in bed with little ambient light.
