I guess they wanted to avoid calling it XS, which is pronounced as excess
And without OLED you get significantly worse black levels and color. 120hz is a gimmick when it comes to tablets, because movies aren't at 120hz and neither is reading text. Why do you hate using your MBP, out of curiosity? Is it a 2016-17 model?

OLED would mean bye-bye ProMotion. No more smooth scrolling. Instead we’d get ghosting text and headaches galore. No thanks.
This new iPad can join the ranks of a finger-print magnet too... Not leaving anything out .
Oled won’t be here yet..maybe by 2020June seems so far away! 11" OLED screen and A11X inside I buy it if it is edgeless screen.
Got it. Will reread.
Pretty sure we ARE getting the in betweener. If we don’t I still wouldn’t buy a 12.9 even with reduced bezels. It’s like having a 50” HDTV 2 feet from my eyes. Simply doesn’t work as a tablet. Anyway even for laptops I’ve always preferred the 11 to 12 inch range.
The 9.7 ... here’s my wild theory actually. Maybe next year a merge of the mini and the 9.7. If the mini goes bezelless I read somewhere you can fit a 9.7 screen in there. I don’t see the 9.7 chassis going bezelless because a larger screen goes into IPP territory. The other way makes sense (9.7 ish screen in a smalller chassis)
Maybe even two models. A normal cheap entry level and a mini pro with pencil.
120Hz is absolutely not a gimmick. It makes scrolling, animations and input feel buttery smooth. ProMotion is the best upgrade to Apple displays since retina. And without OLED you get significantly worse black levels and color. 120hz is a gimmick when it comes to tablets, because movies aren't at 120hz and neither is reading text.
Hopefully Apple has realized that about the 12.9". It's just too big. I've had similar thoughts about combining the smaller models into something in-between, but haven't really thought about the 9.7" fitting into the mini's enclosure. Let's do some math and see if it's possible:
iPad Mini Physical Dimensions: 8" x 5.31" = ~9.6"
So the 9.7" diagonal display will barely not fit. They could either bump up the physical size by a small amount, or shrink the display size. I think for differentiation it makes more sense to shrink the display size to around 9", but from the perspective of Apple keeping fairly consistent PPIs in their LCDs for supply chain purposes, it makes more sense to bump up the physical size.
That all being said, if Apple is going to redesign the iPad, they are going to start with the iPad Pro. So I don't see this happening until Spring 2019 at the earliest, and given the lower price point of this iPad, maybe even beyond that unless they can see significant cost savings by combining the iPad Mini and iPad into one product. The issue is that shrinking the bezels that much on lower end products means they'll have to have the expensive Face ID modules. They might be down in price low enough by this time next year, but no way they'll have it this year.
Well, to be fair, "retina" is determined by how far away you typically hold a device from your face relative to the PPI of the display itself. This is why Macs usually have lower PPI—they're usually seen 18-36" away. Phones are held closer, and iPads are somewhere in the middle. However, I do see a small difference between 326 PPI on my old iPhone 7 and 458 PPI on my iPhone X. Though I hardly see a difference between 401 PPI in the iPhone Plus and the 458 PPI in the iPhone X. It's extremely subtle and I think I can say with a good level of certainty that there is no reason to ever increase resolution beyond around 450 PPI due to absolute limits of human vision. So even though the 264 PPI looks about the same as 326 PPI at each device's typical viewing distance, true retina displays viewed with 20/20 or corrected vision likely lie somewhere around or a little above 375 PPI for an iPad held at a typical viewing distance. So 326 PPI would be noticeable, but I wish they would just jump straight to @3X which would be around 397 PPI for iPad which should be more than enough for that class of device. This would be my preferred option. No software changes would be required for that to work either. Despite what Apple claims, 264 ppi is not "retina" quality for an iPad. 326 ppi is though.
This isn’t fragmentation. People for some reason thought this when the 10.5” was rumored despite numerous corrections, this is not another model/screen size in the lineup, it replaces the smaller iPad Pro.
Was hoping you'd do the math
Totally agree on the 'not this year' part. I was just speculating about the future. This year will be the iPad Pro 'X'. Personally, I see the new 11" model and that's it. Internal upgrades on the 10.5 and 12.9 to be eventually a) phased out or b) change the 12.9 next year. There's a precedent - the iPhone X strategy.
I think they'll only make a smaller iPad Pro/X if they consolidate the bigger iPad models. What I'm hoping with the iPhone is eventually the iPhone X will become a more normal phone and drop in price a bit. Will it ever go back down to $699? Nope, but maybe $799-849, with an iPhone SE X (hah) with a 4.8" display (same physical size roughly as the SE) that sits around $599, an iPhone X Plus that sits around $999, and I guess that rumored 6.1" LCD model around $699. Although honestly I don't see that 6.1" LCD thing being a long-term strategy so it's difficult to fit it into what I think the lineup will look like 2-3 years from now. So if this is the case with iPhone X coming down in price a bit and replacing that LCD model in a few years, I could see something similar happen with the iPad Pro/X thing. Eventually you end up with an 11-11.5" iPad X that starts around $849 and a 9-9.7" iPad X that starts around $649, with the regular iPad around $349—possibly shrunk down to something in between the iPad and iPad Mini like 8.5" but with older chips, LCD display (assuming the iPad X goes to OLED/mLED), bigger bezels, older cameras, less storage, etc.Price wise - the new (if it happens) combined Mini/9.7 won't be budget. This year we get the even cheaper 9.7 with the old body style and I think that will stick around for a few years and the iPhone SE of the iPads. Next year either we see a mini/9.7 bezelless version at a price premium and an addition to the Pro line with pencil support. Either the 9.7 gets the all screen X treatment or the 'mini' brand goes edge to edge with a *slightly* larger form factor to get us to the 9.7 size. Same thing really but there might be some advantage in keeping the mini brand going.
Or they give up on anything below 11" on the pro line, let the old form factor 9.7 take over the low end and assume that the larger phones (6.1 and whatever the X+ is) replace mini iPad use. Hope not. I love the mini form factor and the 4:3 ratio gives you an effective 50 to 60% greater screen real estate than the tall and skinny + phones. Let's see .
For now I'm happy with a 11 (or hopefully 11.5) IPP. It's an instant buy and next year we'll see the rest of the lines sorted.
That's a very good point. But it's also a lot of iPads to put out there, considering the smaller market size. However this could be a good way to raise the ASP on the iPad without pissing off too many people.

I think it would be good for Apple to produce as few iPad options as possible to keep margins lower. Three is plenty. Entry, flagship small, flagship large. iPhone is a bigger market, so I think they can get away with four sizes. Five is a bit much, so we'll probably see consolidation this autumn. In three years I'd like to have this:
- iPhone 6.8" (yeah, let's just ditch the X thing and numbers altogether already?)
- iPhone 5.8"
- iPhone 4.8"
- iPhone SE 4" (needs some kind of designation to indicate that it's slower and cheaper)
- iPad 11.5"
- iPad 9.7"
- iPad SE 8.5" (why not SE since its cheaper?)
- iMac Pro 32" (please)
- iMac 27" (don't need the 5K name any more, consolidate into one machine)
- Mac Pro (the modular hotness) with 32" 6K Thunderbolt Display
- Mac (replace the Mini, little bit bigger, like a much slower consumer version of Mac Pro but you can only swap the HDD and RAM, performance comparable to 16" MBP, most unlikely thing to happen, lol)
I could also see them eventually rebranding the iPhone to Apple Phone, and possibly rename the iMac to just the Mac, but that would also complicate the iMac Pro name, lol. I removing "i" in product names will become more of a thing, but the names are also iconic, so who knows. Wow this got long, sorry.
- MacBook Pro 16" (reduced bezels, same physical size as 15")
- MacBook Pro 13" (reduced bezels, same physical size as 12" MacBook but thicker)
- MacBook 13" (fusion of Air and MacBook so it has more ports, but cheaper with bezels and faster but comparatively slow MacBook Air-grade hardware)
Interest is already peaked. Whatever new iPad Pro coming out in June is to be my graduation gift. Slimmer bezels seems a given based on all the rumors. Can’t wait for the reveal.
Excellent advice. I agree. For the price of a full iPad Pro configuration (iPP+ASK+Pencil) one could buy an MBA + basic iPad + stylus. For college/university, a macOS (desktop or notebook) device is a must.Going to Uni? I’ll be the party pooper and say that a regular ole laptop, albeit not as cool, may be a better choice.unless you have one or an iMac already.
I’m switching my workflow to an IPP buyback I’m an auThor and that’s just my portable writing machine with some video editing. Even then, I can’t see myself without a regular old fashioned computer as well.
Just something to think about. Maybe the new MBA and the cheap uocoming iPad MAY be a better combi for college.
Awesome news, looking to upgrade from my 10.5.
11" so this could mean, they remove the 10.5" and the 12.9" and make just one size ?!
