Future product lines

iPhone Current Gen ($200) ___ iPhone Current Gen plus bigger screen ($300)
iPhone Last Gen ($100) ___ iPhone Last Gen plus bigger screen ($200)
iPhone Two Gen Ago ($000) ___ iPhone Two Gen Ago plus bigger screen ($100)

I believe that Apple will break the iPad mini and iPad into similar product lines and price differentiation for older models. Some people like 4", some like 5", why not sell them both (see iPad strategy). They also need to introduce another phone product line at a higher end price point (apple will always offer a high end for all products: laptops desktops, iPads ... next iPhones). I'm sure there will be other goodies that come with the bigger screen for each model, it will probably have a different design all together. This will also give the perception, which is 'everything', that their $0 iphone (or $300ish no contract?) is very affordable compared to some of their most expensive phones.

People will complain about the lack of innovation but in fact we have come a long way from where we were in 2006. The next great innovations will be in new categories, not iPhones or iPads. This is just their bread and butter now and they aren't going to mess with success, just offer people more options.

I really believe people don't understand marketing here. You only market what you have to sell. Just like Steve did in the days of the G5 even if the G5 was a crap solution for a desktop computer.

More importantly are the can'ts. You can't market something you don't have to sell. Further you can't market your competitions product.

They did market it a bit as an optimum size for the average person. The site also says that the 4" screen is "just right" and "It’s bigger, but it’s the same width as iPhone 4S. So everything you’ve always done with one hand — typing on the keyboard, for instance — you can still do with one hand."

This can be interpreted in slightly different ways. Even though hand size varies a lot, Apple can safely say that anyone who can use an iPhone 4S with one hand can use an iPhone 5 with one hand. I think it's the best size for the average person, but there's no perfect size for everyone.

This is the big problem with the one size fits all crowd. I'm 6 ft tall with modestly large hands so a bigger iPhone isn't a problem. However physical fit is more of a non issue then many believe, it is the visual benefit that one gets from a larger screen that is important. Larger is especially useful for older eyes and text input.

A 5" phone, after Tim Cook just said on their earnings call that they believe they have the perfect size? And one that's thinner and lighter than iPhone 5? And released the same year as the upgrade to the iPhone 5?

another one

The 5S isn't even out yet, and speculation is already out about an iPhone 6 ?...

Prove it.

"All these rumors have generated a significant amount of speculation on how such a larger model might make sense in Apple's iPhone lineup, especially when comparing it to Samsung's current offerings."

Of course.

But then why didn't they make the iPhone 5 4.5" or 5"? Big a** Android phones have been around for a while now. If Apple really felt they needed to jump on that bandwagon why didn't they do it with iPhone 5? Unless the stock price drop has so spooked Tim Cook he's decided to follow the Wall Street clowns advice and just copy Samsung.

The most confusing thing if this ends up being true is why release a 5S and a 6.....why not just skip a 5S and go to the 6?

That brings up another issue... naming. It's fine if you only have one product in a line... you can name them incrementally. But it gets trickier when you introduce a 2nd model.

We've already seen the iPad drop the number and just call it "iPad" and now "iPad Mini"... and their computers don't have any public-facing numbers (only year-generations as a subtitle)

iPad is now the name for the 9.7" model and iPad Mini is the 7.9" model (with appropriate retina designations and/or year-generation indicators)

iPhones will have to come up with some new name. iPhone for the 5" and iPhone Mini for the 4" ?

Or iPhone Pro/Plus for the 5" and simply iPhone for the 4" ?

They'll have to come up with something... and it won't be confusing.

I Call B*******

When "rumors" are this predicable, they're not rumors they're spam.

Apple's next phone is going to be thinner, lighter, with a bigger screen than the last one? Wake me up when you have something worthwhile to say. This is "Page 2" garbage at best.

How can you not say that a 5s and 6 being released in the same year is surprising....anything but predictable IMO

So basically these rumors are coming from those who want or think Apple needs to copy Samsung or they're DOOMED. I guess next we'll be hearing about a 6" plastic phablet with a stylus. :D

What I really don't understand about all this is..

If Apple continues to sell the "regular-sized" iPhones.. why on earth do people give a crap if they make a bigger iPhone or not?

Some people like a smaller phone and some people like a larger phone. Choice is great. Get over yourselves, my God.

Also, all these people who are so concerned with Apple's future as a company are either ridiculous or have never had a creative job.

Sometimes you make amazing things. Sometimes you make so-so things. Sometimes you just have to follow the trends to stay above water and then you find your rhythm again.

Apple can't stay on top forever, all the time. Sorry guys, they're just a company trying to make money and they're really freakin' good at it.

Just like the previous comment said... you only talk about what you're currently selling.

Every iPhone that comes out is "the best iPhone ever" and that's what the iPhone 5 is to Apple.

The 2013 Honda Accord is "the best Accord ever" and that's what they advertise.

They're not gonna say "this model sucks... next year will be better!"

I think Apple did when it was released - they had that same picture of a thumb and slid the iphone 5 into it showing you could still use it 1 handed. I think it was an important part of the marketing. And I agree with it, i like the size of iphone 5, and dislike those bigger ones.

The big phones are for toys that aim to offer what is not otherwise offered. The attitude is exactly this:

"Well, this is garbage..ridiculously oversIzed and unusable as a normal smartphone. But, no else makes this size (for good reason) so since we're not putting any real effort into it lets push it out the door and maybe 5 or 6 people will buy it. There's bound to be a handful of idiots in the world who will buy this over an iPhone simply because it's bigger, not better."

Steve would roll in his grave if they released a 5" phone.

Apple use to be about making things as small and thin as possible and now they are going in the opposite direction lol.

I don't understand why everyone gets their panties in a bunch when a rumor comes out about a bigger iPhone. It is not 2008 anymore and phones are getting bigger whether you like it or not. They should keep the 5 at 4" and give people that want an option to have a bigger phone such as many people including me the option to buy one. I am a adult, and a 5" phone is appealing to me. I sat next to this woman at the bar the other day with a note 2 and holding both side by side made my iPhone look like a toy. Now, I will never go android (hopefully) but emails were easy to see, use an shuffle through, games looked better being 1" bigger than my iPhone 5 etc.

Apple should add variety to their lineup and they should have done it from the beginning. Android would not have taken off as well if Apple had released the iPhone on all carriers initially and Samsung would not have so much market share if the iPhone lineup had a tad more diversity. A 5" iPhone HD would kill Samsung. Then for the small handed men and people stuck in 2008, they could get a smaller iPhone 4" 5s.

Also, Apple needs a redesigned iOS that has a more updated UI because it is getting a tad old. And before anyone flames me, I have a rmbp, iPad mini, Apple TV and have owned a Mac Pro, iMac and many Apple products since I switched in 2006.

Backpedaling isn't new to Apple. When the sunflower iMac was announced, Steve said they could have just stuck a drive behind an LCD, but that the drive would have slowed way down, so they didn't. The next iMac had a hard drive behind an LCD. ;)

Not going to happen. Why would Apple release a GiantPhone like the Samsung Note series (the "phablet") after all the hype about how the iPhone 5 has the perfect size to still be useable with one hand? Besides, the screen resolution would still have to be 1136*640, so it would end up having a lower dpi.

As shown the the ipad mini there is no reason to not have various device sizes for various people. Making a larger device is great also because it could increase the average selling price

Can't tell if you are being serious or sarcastic... but if the former it's not like Apple's m.o. isn't to trash products/features of competitors and lay on thick how "perfect" its product is. Steve Jobs did this all the time... dissed flash for music players, screenless ones, ones that played video, 7" tablets, are just a few at the top of my head. Of course once Apple incorporated all that it was Boom! Amazing!

In Apple speak the iPhone 5 is the perfect size until the iPhone 6 is released.

Also iPhone 6 released same year as iPhone 5 replacement? Why not if it's a meant to be a companion model a la the iPad 4 and iPad mini release.

I'd be interested in a 5" iPhone. Assuming iOS 7 doesn't disappoint, I might even get one to replace my 4S.

I hope it isn't as large as the mockup though, the home button area and the front-facing camera area should be smaller.

I still say that Apple making a 5" phone this year or even next year would be very worrying. The iPhone 5 was their chance to set the new resolution standard for the next several years. I don't mean that in the sense of having some ridiculous pixel density, I mean that in terms of telling developers "Hey, thanks for supporting 360x480 points for the last half decade. It's time to upgrade, but you won't have to rewrite your apps for another five years". For Apple to backpedal on the iPhone 5's screen resolution the very next year would show a tremendous lack of leadership and direction. To me, that would say: "We really don't know what we're doing anymore, and we're just trying to keep up with the competition", which is the exact opposite of what Apple should be.

the inability of android manufacturers to compete with apple in the same size (3.5, 4 inches) hardware-performance wise (hence the large screens trend) and a ******** of geek asian commuters is making me mad...

maybe they really do make a 5 inch phone.

at least, it will be the fastest in the world by a huge margin. oh well

If they do release a phone with a larger screen the only thing I'd care about is that the screens aspect ratio remains the same across versions. Why? Well 2 main reasons.

I like all my apps to be in the same ratio which at the moment they are not also another change would be frustrating for dev's I'd imagine.

I like watching films on my phone on the train

I am not sure which size I would buy until I compared them. Another thought which occurs is the 'S' versions could just end up being the low-end version of the iPhone from now on released May/June time and the 6 be the major release in September time to split them out for a marketing / manufacturing reason.

Cannot wait to see if the 'large' version if it happens essentially ends up with an iPad CPU

The second one in the lineup is fugly as hell. The proportions are all off.
