That really "got" me when I was over there too. How do I know that they're not copying down my card number when it's out of my sight?

It could happen, but AFAIK, it hasn't happened to me or anyone I know.

A server would have to be extremely stupid to make a habit out of it. There'd be a paper trail a mile long. First the bank notices that a bunch of people who reported fraudulent charges all used their card at the same restaurant. They get in touch with the restaurant, who looks through their records and notices all cards were run by the same server. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I don't think it happens nearly as often as you'd think.

Seems like they'd be less likely to get caught if they took a 20 dollar bill out of the register every now and then.

new tech comes in, but do u actually expect delivery guys to go by this ?

They will be the last leg, if they ever do get on board with anything new, and we will still be asking or a signature on signing from a pizza order.

It cheeses me off too... I use paypal all the time, the last thing i want is to have to stand at the door and sign something. It's not like it's electronics on anything... it's only my dinner

$49 Square reader paired with the driver's phone. Done. Bonus: no signature required if you use Apple Pay.

The chip and pin system is trash. Takes forever to authenticate the card. Not instant.

Chip and PIN has been garbage for me thus far. I'll go to a place and try to swipe the card - "no, you have to insert into the chip reader". Then I'll go somewhere else and see the chip reader and try to insert the card - "no, the chip reader doesn't work, you have to swipe". And I go to my local Wal-Mart - every chip reader there just refuses to take my Citi card w/chip, and they won't allow for a swipe on that card either (even though I KNOW there is no problem with the chip on that card as I'm able to use it elsewhere just fine). The whole chip/card thing has been nothing but a headache for me thus far. I wish every retailer would just get ApplePay up and running already and call it a day. :)

Takes longer to drive through an intersection with a "stop" sign, too.

Now that is what I call "anecdotally correct"!

Chip and pin would be a better system but what we have is Chip and Sign. You may be putting your debit pin in to pay but its not the same as the EU chip and pin system. You will at times put your card in, pay as if its credit and sign nothing but the overall wait is the same. The process is slower but is supposed to be more secure at the transmission level.

Wait time for chip and pin is definitely not the same as wait time for swipe and sign, at least, and is significantly more. There's a reason that bars/restaurants utilize multiple machines at the same time to process transactions.

The horror of leaving my card inserted into the machine... the agony I endured, the profound mental anguish. Well it was all-together too much for my fragile being. I decided to switch to a cash only existence, that I might save my sanity.

But then the ATM machine violently tore the bank card from my hand and held it hostage during the entire transaction.

I've been huddled in the corner ever since...

All of the ATM's I use take your card, scan it, then give it right back. Its in my pocket for the entire process after that. I get your point but none of the ATM's I've used in a while hold your card. When they did, it was easy to walk away and forget it. Getting it back right from the start has eliminated the left behind card from days past.

Chase ATMs don't spit out your cash until you remove the card.

My 2 cents, hate the chip and pin.

I get that it's more secure but it takes so much longer to use than simply swiping and entering your pin, instead we have to now wait for a minute, then enter the pin. At Home Depot I pulled it out early because it appeared that it was done but was in a lull while it was reading, which caused the system to subsequently reject my card from any other terminal, they needed to key in my card manually to undo the error. What a terrible system.

This seems like a step back, not forward and none of it can compare the the ease of use and convenience of Apple Pay, I just wish it were more widely available. First world problems I know, but still.

Do you not have PayPass/PayWave where you live? Or are you talking about purchases over a hundred bucks or so?

Most trips to Walmart for people are well over $100.

We obviously have PayPass/Wave in the Us, as guess what Apple Pay is? :)

People who are complaining about Chip & PIN are whiners. It isn't that hard to use, and just use Apple Pay when you can and don't worry about chip unless you have to like at Walmart.

Most problems with chip is due to user error. People taking the card too early.

Yup, this happened to me also. I ended up just using my card. It froze the system. Ugh. I completely agree about the ease of Apple Pay.
