Hum, both shoplifting and grand theft are illegal. Adultery is not against the law, unless there's some kind of weird puritanical law in the US. So no, you can't equate the 2. At all. It's not like shoplifting to grand theft either. Your position on this matter if flawed. Adultery is a moral problem, you're equating it to a lawful problem.

I do not see the legal implications of either problem as particularly relevant, and only second to the moral side of it anyway. Normally I wouldn't see it this way, but in this case I do anyway because of the person who has been investigated. Like I have stated above, in most of the episodes of the show "To Catch a Predator", Chris Hansen primarily pointed out why it was morally wrong to do those things. The fact that it was against the law, came second.

These are two adults who enjoyed being together. There is no problem here. His wife will deal with this now that the media has exposed this to the world.

The moral side is entirely different too. Again, adultery happens because something is wrong in a couple, it doesn't "just happen". This fault in the couple is usually something brought on by both partners.

You're equating it with morally and legally wrong things like shoplifting and pedophilia. On his show, Chris never pointed out why adultery was wrong. There is no irony here unless you're called Alanis Morissette and you just don't know what irony means.

This is a side of the story which I quite frankly haven't thought of yet. Thanks for clearing it up. :)

I never equated adultery with pedophilia. But from a moral point of view, my stance is that shoplifting is to grand theft as adultery is to preying on 13-year-old girls. I deliberately ignore the legal implications, as they aren't relevant. Would it really make any difference if it still were against the law to cheat on one's spouse?

It would make your shoplifting analogy work for one. Because right now it doesn't.

In the state of Michigan (where CH is from, by the way) adultery is a crime that can technically get you sentenced to life in prison. Are you still saying that my analogy doesn't work?

It doesn't in the civilized world where there is no law against 2 consenting adults having sex together. Only in puritanical america.

But he now resides in Connecticut... ;)

Yes - I know he resides in Connecticut. He therefore won't be prosecuted by the state of Michigan anyway (provided it didn't happen in MI). That, however, doesn't change the fact that he was born and raised in Michigan, where he also took his university degree. It may or may not be illegal where he lives, but it's still illegal where he's from.

Btw, there has been adultery laws in Connecticut as well - but the limit was only 1 year in prison. Not sure if it's still illegal there, but it's considered grounds for divorce anyway.
