Chrome cast about to break out of its shell

Don't know yet. I pick it up on my way home from work. It is gonna replace my Nexus 7 (2013 version) so it is a big downgrade there, but I have gotten to the point where I can't stand the 16:9 ratio. I have a Chromebook (which has horrible resolution) and that doesn't bother me, so I'm sure I will be fine with the iPad.
For the price, I'll deal with a bit lower resolution screen.

I for one love my note 8.0 and that doesn't have an HD screen.
No. The only apps currently supported are YouTube, HBO go, hulu, and Netflix. I may be missing one or two. The reason was Google kept it limited to those apps. In the next month we should see a ton more.

Yes. The apps can easily add functionality. Similar to airplay the apps have an icon you click.

We will find out in a little over a week what apps are coming to Chromecast. There should be a ton of them. I just don't know if Google will allow Amazon Prime in since they are a competitor to Play Movies/TV? I hope so, because I am also a prime member. I have Roku's, so not a big deal, but I can go all Chromecast, I'll dump the Roku's.
BTW, picked up my iPad and loading it up now. Resolution isn't a big deal. It def sucks in comparison to the Nexus 5 or 7, but not a big deal to me. Using iOS7 and iTunes is what is killing me, not the resolution.

Fair point. I own an iPhone 5c and know all too well of the shortcomings of iOS.

Yes, worth it. Had a friend just replace his aged Google TV with it and he loves it. What I use it for is probably irrelevant to you, but in my household, it's been a great purchase. Once you factor in the cost it's a no-brainer.
When we go visit the inlaws we just take the dongle with us and stream all of the usual conten for the kids at their house. As soon as the apps go live and we can stream local content I'm getting rid of the Apple TV as there's nothing it can do the Chromecast can't (unless you're tied to an iTunes library, but I bet there'll be an app for that as well).
There you go, I guess for those who use that feature there's a reason to get an AppleTV.

if you have a decent enough computer with chrome and the chromecast extension installed, you can stream whole web pages. it's pretty hacky, but it works.
the brilliance of chromecast will come later when yr phone apps can cast to it. it's awesome for youtube, netflix, and google play. it's sort of like airplay, but the video goes directly to the chromecast.
unfortunately, like a lot of google's forward thinking software, the best is yet to come.
I have an XPS8700 with the latest CPU and 12gb of RAM and even with one webpage open it is still kind of iffy on whether or not the video will go black or freeze up. It is def still in beta. Hopefully, this will be a moot issue in a little over a week!
People who think that don't understand how the Chromecast works. It has two modes, one which works similarly to miracsat, where you stream to it and the second one is where it acts as a host and streams on its own without needing a second device.
Once the 3rd party apps go public we'll be able to see the full benefit.
Just like Miracast needs a continuous link between the Android device and TV, whereas Chromecast does not. Better have your Android plugged in if you miracast and you better not let it go into sleep mode. Both devices have pro's and con's, but we may see all of Chrome casts con's disappear.
That said, if mirroring does not happen on the Chrome cast, I will be getting a Miracast dongle.

You can choose to project to the monitor and have your tablet screen go to sleep this greatly improving battery life. I wish Chromecast had miracast support so I could turn my Dell Venue Pro 8 into a desktop replacement.
