It has happened, rare but it's happened. A few years ago, two people were robbing people who were selling Macs and iPads. I remember hearing one or two cases over the years of people getting killed meeting up.

There are a few cases I've heard of and they always involve somebody not using common sense and meeting in dangerous places or in cities with a high crime rate. If you use common sense and meet in public places (I always meet in a Starbucks since there's one on every corner), there's nothing to worry about.

"Rare" is an understatement. There's a far greater chance that you will die in a plane crash or a car crash on the freeway or get run over by a car walking down the street.

I have only met up at Starbucks also and have never had any problems. You aren't going to get robbed when there's 20 people nearby drinking coffee.

People have been murdered walking down the street, do you stay at home and live in fear?

Conduct the sale in a public safe place.

THIS

People HAVE been trampled by Rhino's. If you stay inside because one might escape the zoo, head into your neighborhood, and trample you, I'll just lend you my Glock and you can end your misery now...

I still wouldn't advise going to a ghetto McDonalds to sell an iPhone/iPad to some dude you don't know, but with GENERAL discretion you can be one of the many people in society that's NOT a moron and simply avoid those situations in the first place.

If you meet at a local bank during business hours, you won't be robbed. If you meet at a local police station, you won't be robbed. If you are robbed in either location, I renew my offer to lend you my Glock (and taking it to a bank or police station will ensure you won't be robbed too, as they'll arrest you first =)).

Just don't be STUPID, and Craigslist is fine. All of the "horror" stories begin with : "I was meeting this guy named Darnell in a dark alley at the stroke of midnight..." or "Shafiqua said she'd be at the local Wendy's with 40 iPad Airs for $45 each but when I got there her 4 brothers were there with baseball bats, and told me the iPads were in thier car". They never seem to involve meeting someone at a bank/police station during business hours do they???

I wonder why... well, not really...

The best part is, if you meet at a bank YOU bank at (although I don't meet at my primary branch) you can deposit the $$$ right then and there and won't get robbed LATER either (except for bank fees, which is another discussion...).

So there you go. Craigslist problems solved for all. If they WON'T meet you at a bank or police station, don't go. Even if you REALLY want that iPad.

And if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. I know it seems like common sense, but here we are...

Only do the buy if it is face to face at a public location with access to wifi. DFU restore iPad and activate it. If you hit a place asking for Apple ID before the whole 'set up as new' stuff, THAT is activation lock. Make him sort it out. If he can't, refuse to buy.

Also if all else works. Check it for dings in metal that might suggest someone pried it open to change out parts. If you can, bring a small magnet and put it on the logo. With a legit screen you should get a reaction. No reaction it could have had third party parts put in. If so, Apple won't touch it for any reason so it might not be worth it to you to continue.

DFU restore requires a computer. I think you are thinking of "Erase all contents and settings."

Umm no not at all.

And yes I know that a DFU requires a computer. There are these really cool ones called notebooks, some folks call them laptops. Very portable. Easy enough to bring one.

I assumed that the OP would have the sense to ask what a DFU is if HE doesn't know and can't google a proper answer and would go from there.

Ah. I would have mentioned DFU restore would require you to bring a notebook, but I suppose you have a different outlook on how to give help on forums. And is DFU really necessary? It seems a lot of hassle to drag a notebook to a transaction and set it up, hook up the iPad, so you'd need to have a cable handy, oh, and you need a place with wifi so the computer can get on the internet... Meh, I've gotten so used to just brining my iPad, and having always on cellular connection! :p
