The European Commission recently implemented a micro-USB universal charger standard, leading to some speculation that Apple would have to include such a port in addition to or instead of the existing dock connector

Come on now... Who speculated that Apple might replace its proprietary conector used in one of the biggest Tech Eco Systems there is.

Who ever thought that this is going to happen, was/is a complete fool!

Ha, ha....

Next up - people have found "screws"...

;)

Sounds about right. I'm still poo-pooing on any iPhone 5 before 2012. My bet this is a the doc connector cable for the unified iPhone 4 hardware revision that is the same for Verizon and AT&T sans the radio module.

Apple has done internal hardware revisions and not change the product name for a long time. If you look at the first generation Mac Mini, there was in fact three hardware revisions while keeping the same specs, product name and price. You needed to look into the "firmware version" to know there was a switch in physical hardware.

ipod, ipad, iphone users have accessories with dock connectors.

because of that, apple cannot drop the dock connector

They can and shoot themselves in the foot like Palm did before getting picked up my HP. In the twelve years of Palm models, they did FIVE connector changes totally screwing up the third party accessory market. Some of these small accessory companies were small groups or people or side ventures seeing their tooling costs not paying into the projected lifetime of their product.

Palm corporate refused to sign any agreement let along bond themselves to support a connector over an projected lifetime. The inside reason they did this was to have a regular refresh of their own accessories and compete against their waning-loyal accessory manufacturers. That was very short sighted and cost them a lot of support in the long run. One major manufacturer had a $50,000 tooling for a dashboard go up in smoke when Palm changed the connector on the next generation Palm device and didn't notify this big boy.

While Apple can be criticized a lot, they have been consistent with the connector for going on eight years now keeping the third party accessory market vibrant.

The whole EU dock connector to mini-usb thing is quite silly.

Hoping to see Thunderbolt but probably won't see it until iPhone comes with fast SSD.

I wouldnt be surprised to see an ipod dock-thunderbolt adaptor, but there is NO WAY apple will force everyone who wants the new iPhone/iPad/etc. would need a thunderbolt connection. That would be business suicide.

Although for the few people who do now have a thunderbolt connection it would be nice to use your new-found speed for song transfers. It would be exciting to watch a 32Gb iphone fill up in less than a minute.

Why would to even bring up your "point" when it is clearly stated in the article???? " but Apple can meet the new requirements by simply including a dock connector to micro-USB adapter."

Because the article even bothered to bring it up!

Keep dreaming.. Thunderbolt is built on PCI Express technology, which currently exists on x86 computers. It's not easily portable to low-powered ARM devices.. So, not happening on iPhone/iPad any time soon.

Also, the patent you link to is around combining USB 3.0 and DisplayPort connector. It has no mention whatsoever about 30-pin dock connector used by iOS devices.

I agree it doesn't mention the 30-pin per se but it does reference an iPod (iOS device?)

"Images accompanying the application show a male plug connector attached to an iPod."

I still say you that you can't count out Apple's magic. I bet they could get the A5 to support Thunderbolt if they wanted to... and if I were them I would. If you want to push a technology you put it on your flagship product.

"simply including a dock connector to micro-USB adapter"

This defeats the purpose of having the standard charge port rule.

The EU is trying to lower waste not encourage manufacturers to include more knick-knacks in the box.

An adapter also means it's something you'll lose on travels so you still wont be able to use any old charger you can find when you reach your destination.

On both counts, an adapter is a poor solution and should be prevented by either a change in the rules or manufacturers agreeing on a reasonable timeframe to just adapt a standard internal port.

The iPad will have a standard 30-pin dock connector so it's backwards compatible with everything else out there, but will come with Thunderbolt connectivity as well. Apple wouldn't hype up Thunderbolt on the new MacBook Pro's if there wasn't a real-world product right around the corner to connect it to. There's no better way to show the general public just how fast Thunderbolt can be than syncing a 128GB iPad from empty to full in seconds. (Okay, not seconds, but much, much, much faster than we're used to).

I also think the iPad is going to break from standard iOS tradition and have more than just Memory/3G differences amongst the models. All will have front facing cameras, some will have back, some will have Thunderbolt etc etc. </my2cents>

No it won't. Despite your wishful thinking - there are a number of practical and technological reasons why Thunderbolt in its current form cannot be implemented in the iOS devices.

iPod touch w/slide out gaming controls?

We continue to have a hard time believing that Apple is planning to release an iPhone with slide-out keyboard, but it is certainly possible that the company has developed internal prototypes simply to assess its options.

hmmmm, I just saw another phone company's slide-out gaming controls, maybe instead of an iphone w/keyboard, maybe we will see an iPod touch w/slide out gaming controls!

My biggest wonder then is, why the big marketing push of Thunderbolt if you can't plug it into anything save a pricey RAID? Putting Thunderbolt on the new iPad so the general consumer can see just how much faster it can transfer data vs USB will be huge. Consumers don't understand 10gbps, they understand filling an iPad in minutes.

5 more months of this BS!

At times it's a bit much but hey, it's Apple.

If they weren't polarizing and controlling it'd get boring.

When Apple decides to take control as they have, there's no stopping them.

Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Precisely :)

Besides the guiding principle that is a hallmark of Apple is it's ease of use. Not complicated like Android.

The lure of the iPad is how easy and non threatening it is for seniors. I know lots of my friends grand parents just love their iPads. Much better than the old Web TV.

Now that jobs is old, he understands the seniors value. It's a huge market that Apple owns now.

By keeping it simple and selling through senior friendly Walmart, Apples ROI will rise rapidly.

They will have to change it one day. They didnt mind changing the power pins a couple years ago. That caused many things not to work.

They stopped using the 12V power, which they should have done from the beginning when they dropped FW support. Not doing so made for a more painful transition to 5V power for all auto accessories.
