Exactly. I'm guessing a drain hole for those owners (and there are many of them) who drop their devices into the toilet.

Ha ha… Now I'll be looking for the glass water-tank prop as Tim walks out on stage. That would make for a pretty good demo.

Definitely a second camera. What better selling point for the younger audience than being able to take pictures and video in 3D?

Other people said 3d as well, but I believe your reasoning makes sense. Plus, the camera module for the iPod touch isn't as expensive, so cost won't be an issue. Also, you don't want to take a risk with your most successful product (iPhone) by trying something that may or not pay off (3d camera capability). So why not test it t on a device that you can afford to lose some sales on?

Well lets see now...Possibly because this form factor made them the most successful tech company in the world. Maybe you would suggest, a triangular shape, maybe a hexagon? Please...

Actually, I would like to try out a hexagonal shaped tablet. I think it would be interesting.

The "Mystery Hole" explained:

Apple needs a revamped iPod Touch design. Throughout all the multimedia devices we have seen, there have been holes on all sides of those devices ranging from speakers to microphone holes to headphone ports, etc..

Apple will be ending the norm of these "side-holes" and introducing a rear speaker/headphone-port hybrid - though inconvenient, it is a design that will shock the public and generate many a "wow" from most devoted of Apple's fans.

:apple::eek::apple:

Night and Day difference. Try putting and iPad mini in your pocket.

My iPhone fits in my pocket. A Touch makes sense if there is no alternative other than an iPad. An iPad mini will cannibalize Touch sales within two years. After that, Apple will be sending folks to the iPhone or the mini.

It is for a stereo speaker. For those saying it wouldn't be since the sound would muffle on a table, look at the iPad speaker placement. It will NOT be for a 3D camera, 3D is a gimmick. For them to add 3D they would need other screens that play the 3D content, Apple is about integration.

IF... Apple seriously discontinued the iPod Touch for an iPad Mini that would be one of the most foolish moves in recent years that Apple has ever done, perhaps even dumber than the 3rd generation shuffle.

If they were to discontinue the iPod Touch (3.5", maybe 4") for a nearly 8" tablet this would leave the competition wide open for a portable media player. Samsung Galaxy Player specifically.

I can't see Apple just giving away this market, after all we saw Apple scramble for the 16GB 4th generation nano in response to the Zune 16 and the Zune was nowhere near a threat.

iPad Mini and Touch don't even have the same market. Take a 4" iPod Touch (assuming it gets a screen update this year) for on the fly games is far more practical than having to carry around a 7.85" Mini. I don't see why people continue to see the tablet in the same playing field as a PMP.

Even if they are in similar price ranges they still have a different audience. If the iPad Mini does actually come out I think this would lower the iPod Touch price or offer a higher capacity at the same price points.

Believe it or not the ability to pocket the device VS carrying it is a significant usability difference.

hahah even though this is fake, there's no way it's a speaker dude. the ipad is curved at the bottom allowing sound to be projected when on a flat surface. this is showing a flat back, thus the sound would be muffled, thus thats not for a speaker, thus the whole thing is fake. end of argument.

even though i don't think this is real..

Steve Jobs has always mentioned photography and video to be a huge deal within apple.

It's a long shot but this looks closer to resemble 3D imagery rather than some dumb speaker that wouldn't make ANY sense being there.

i dont know why im joined and am addicted to this site, every leak looks aweful and non apple like. Ive been content the passed years just waiting for the keynote to watch.. and now im stuck with seeing these long screen like products in my nightmares

I don't think they would put something in that place because when you will hold the iPod, your hand will cover it.

I see. It must be nice to know the future.

Is there any possibility that does are actually iphone 6th generation cases? It does look like iphone rather that ipod

It's a 3D camera

Am I the only guy seing a 3D camera on this case?
I mean, one camera on each corner, with the aproximate distance between the human eye. 3D camera!! :D

Lets think about this logically. A 3D camera on a device like an iPod means that the display must be 3D as well to get any use out of the camera. A 3D display will require more space and more battery power, yet the iPod touch is supposedly going to be even thinner, leaving less room for the 3D display and the bigger battery.
The 3D camera would become a useless gimmick without a 3D display, so I don't see :apple: doing this on the next gen iPod touch.

While a speaker makes more sense, it too has drawbacks. Putting down the iPod on a table face up would muffle the sound, and putting it face down means you can't choose any music! When holding the iPod, the speaker faces the other way, so the sound travels away from you which would just be pointless. Also, holding the iPod may block the speaker while playing a game, making the speaker pointless.

If this hole was for the flash, then it wouldn't matter if you covered it during playing a game as it will not be in use, and the flash doesn't take up that much extra space. Also, the flash requires very little extra battery power to operate, as it only briefly flashes while taking a photo. It just makes sense.

If this new iPod touch gets camera flash then it wouldn't surprise me if the next iPad got it as well.

It is an ipod not an iphone

First of all sense it is an iPod touch which is manly made by apple for consumers who want to game and listen to music without paying crazy over the roof Phone bills they could make it 3d and scene the place for the flash light is just like the iPhone4s next to the upper cam the mysterious hole can be a speaker but i don't think that apple is dump to do that because if the iPod is facing up and it rings from a notification the speaker can get damaged and it could effect the screen because of the i pods thin profile, the iPod will presumable have a smaller dock which would hint for bigger speaker space for the bottom. the only logical think is a second lense for 3d. ppl say no 3d because bigger battery and and better display for 3d, it is going to be longer so more space for battery and components inside is possible and the ipod touch is already thin if it gets even thinner ppl may not be comfortable holding it. a lot of ppl had to get used to 4g ipod because it was so thin. next gen dosent mean thinner just like what ppl thought for ipad 3 but then we all saw apple choosing display over thinness.although this might be fake last year when apple put out the wight ipod touch i thought it was going to be new and have 3d like the n3ds, but it was a different color :( .never the less (ipods iphones) are number 1# in portable gaming devices and i hope for a non glass 3d display like many do for sure. and the space difference between the two holes is similar to the space between the eyes so big possibility.

Too small for a home button

Well, I would not mind a home button at the back, to accomodate for a larger screen.

The hole looks a bit too small for that though.

My Guess

Could be either a shutter button for the camera, a magsafe connector for add-on's or docks for charging or a game controller, a space for the wi-fi antenna since the the back is supposedly going to be solid brushed aluminum back, or just maybe they are going to put a better sounding speaker and they needed a larger grill hole for the sound; I bet it will be one of these. :D

I was esceptical too about 3D but detailing the engineering prototype case of the next iPhone it includes too dual glass areas or windows, why? The obvious its because it has another camera at bottom to complete the 3D stereo capture,
Also LG showed prototype 3D LCD at same dpi , so at least to me its obvious the next iPhone will be 3D iPhone.

Very good reasoning...The only caveat would be that the leaked case is not authentic. If it's not authentic, your beautiful house of logic is built on a foundation of fantasy. Good thinking though. If the case is real you are the winner of the contest. Bravo!!! Although, if it is real, you still may be wrong. Life can be so unfair. :(
