I am having trouble finding a direct answer to my question but am I correct in assuming I will lose my grandfathered AT&T unlimited plan if I switch to Next?

No, Next is their new car floor plan. You Buy the phone from AT&T and they break it down into monthly payments.

Now if you get a new service plan (phone, data, etc). They have discounts on different plans because you have bought the device from them, or bought your own phone.

They eliminated the old plans, inflated the new plans, offered a discount (on the new plans) if you buy a phone from them, that they once had to eat as part of the cost. WIN WIN for AT&T

Absolutely not! If you do your AT&T your plan stays exactly the same unless YOU decide to change it. AT&T Next and Mobile Share Value are not the same thing. You can do one without the other. :)

I used Next for a 5s last year and still on my original unlimited data and 450 minutes, plus 1000 texts for $10 that's also not offered anymore.

I believe you can go Next, it's just you can't do the mobile share plan with it, since that essentially a new data plan.

The only way that the Next plan makes any sense at all is if you switch to Mobile Share. If you keep the unlimited plans, the switch is more costly. And if you are thinking a free 5C for Mom, nothing for your wife, and 6s for you and your daughter, the Next doesn't really benefit you. That's just my opinion. My advice, is get the data you need in terms of costs, estimate your upgrade cycles and make a little spreadsheet. You'll see what you total ownership cost and monthly plan costs are and you can determine over 1 and 2 year cycles where the best price point is. It will take you 15 min.

I was assuming if I went with Next I would go to Mobile Share. If it were up to me, I'd get a new phone every year…at least when they go up a "number" (had 3, then 4, then 5…skipped the "s"). There could be a market out there for "phone plan advisors" to help…kind of like with Obamacare.

Statusnone88, can you clarify for us what happens when a customer who is currently on an older or grandfathered individual plan wants to get a new phone on a 2 year subsidy contract?

I know on the Family Share Plans if you upgrade a device with a 2 year subsidy then you are locked into a $40 a month rate for the line associated with the new upgraded device. Whereas if you use Next or buy the device outright you get a $15 or $25 discount on the monthly line.

Are individual and grandfathered plans handled differently? Does their monthly line cost stay the same if they upgrade with a 2 year contract and subsidy? If there is no monthly change to their rates then why would an individual with 1 or 2 lines or an older grandfathered plan every want to use the Next Plan?

No change in monthly plan. You pay, in my case, 399 for a 6+ with 64 gig and a $40 fee. Have had the fee waived every time. We do not want to use the mobile share plan, the Next plan is just a payment plan tacked on to your monthly plan.

I can choose to pay 42.45 a month for the phone for 20 months and it is added to my monthly plan just the same. We do not get the discount, but our plans are lower than getting a new plan with the discount.

Omg trying so hard to understand this. Yes I want a new iPhone 6... Upgraded last year to the 5... Eligible for next. Don't want my bill going up . I pay 77 a month for 450 talk , 1000 text and unlimited data.

I averaged about 2g of data, some months are higher. I guess I understand the next program but don't get the mobile share plans.

Will next benefit an individual? Can't pay 100 bucks a month for a phone and plan.

Am I better off waiting another year...

(Former employee, left the company a week ago due to finding better opportunities else where)

Hey guys! I responded to someones thread with this, and the more I looked at it the more I thought I should post this in it's own thread. With pre-order day (and launch day) coming up, I want everyone to be 1000% clear on what AT&T Next is about. I want to clear something up before I start... I am NOT bashing AT&T Next. This program is fantastic, especially for us that have been paying full price for their phones for years. But it's very much that.. you pay full price. You no longer get the subsidy on the equipment, but a discount on the service as long as you are on Mobile Share Value. AT&T will still let you sign a two-year (the employees will fight you on it, and not because they make anything on AT&T Next, because they don't but because it is usually a better value for us as customer) if you choose. So... either get your discount up front on the equipment with a 2-year, or get a discount on your service over time with Next. Here's my original post from another thread:

Former AT&T Employee here:

AT&T Next is pretty much 20 or 24 month interest-free financing. You walk out of the store with the phone for your states/county's sales tax %, and can pay off the phone literally anytime. NOTE: people on old school "combined billing" will NOT be able to pay the phone off early. (I just left the company recently, checked back with a friend and she said this still holds true. Had this issue a few weeks ago with a customer trying to pay their Next off and they couldn't because of combined billing. So until they change this, keep it in mind.) Combined billing is where you have your U-verse or other AT&T home services (Old school phone, DSL) bundled together on one bill. It has a completely different account number than your regular wireless account.

Next does NOT affect your plan at ALL! But if you are on Mobile Share Value, you retain your $15 credit (300mb - 6GB plans) and $25 credit (10GB+ plans) if you pay "full price" for your phone(AKA AT&T Next). You do NOT need to trade it in to upgrade again. Once the phone is paid in full, you can do another Next. Keep in mind, if you do want to trade in, and upgrade at 12 or 18 payments you can do so ANY time. You just have to give AT&T 12 or 18 months payments UPFRONT + your phone and boom, you can start another Next. Or just wait the 12 or 18 months. Whenever AT&T gets their money pretty much. Though, to do this, you start a new installment all over again.

EDIT: As of right now, you can only do 4 installments of Next on your BAN (billing account number). This means if you have a family of 5, 1 person won't be able to do Next. This counts for any tablets you are paying off on Next as well.

AT&T will also let ANYONE who has 18 months or less (YES, one and a half years) left on their existing two year contract start doing Next as long as you have't missed any payments or owe them money recently. (Check with your local store on this one, but the company is letting people out of their 2 years VERY early). This will let you out of your contract with out a termination fee and then you'll be on Next.

Hope this helps. Feel free to post this in other threads talking about AT&T Next. I always hated seeing people confused about Next because it's so much different than what we're used to, and you get a different answer out of every rep you speak with.

Also PM me if you have any other questions. Again, I am not currently on AT&T's payroll, but I am not bitter about the company at all and have no problems clearing up confusion for fellow MacRumors users and fellow customers :)

Hmm..

Does this mean, I could upgrade using the traditional 2 year contract model, 2 months into it, and get Next?

Clarification On AT&T Next From An AT&T Employee

This is the plan im on... Timothy so you're just paying your regular bill plus whatever the phone cost? What's your monthly bill?

Eventually I will need unlimited text though

If I went to an AT&T store to discuss my bill and options, will I get a straight answer or will they just try to push me into Mobile Share and Next?

You retain your plan if you sign a 2 year contract. The only thing you can't qualify for is discounted mobile share value on that line if you switch. Just run the numbers, I think it comes out even for most people but it's just if you want to spend more a month and less up front with AT&T Next and Mobile Share Value or visa versa with 2 year contacts.

Hmm..

Nope. This is only for people who signed their two year contract before a certain date. It was an article posted on their info hub. But they could change it anytime. I'd check with 611 and ask when you would become Next eligible if you signed a 2 year for this new iPhone.

Eventually I will need unlimited text though

  • $39.99 for 450 Minutes (3000 rolled over currently)
  • $10 for 1000 text (Rarely use since I text to iPhones with iMessage)
  • $30 for unlimited data (Throttled after 5gigs, which can browse, but say goodbye to gifs and video)
  • $6.99 for mobile insurance premium (Probably remove this, but best to have some insurance since you'll need a phone 12 months later to trade in)
  • $3 for mobile protection (Probably remove this if it's not part of my insurance)
  • -$16.80 for corporate discount
  • $32 to for ATT Next 12/20 iPhone 5s 32GB (Financed $640, but this year there's no discount and the financed amounted may be $750, totaling 37.5 each month)
  • $6.18 for Other Fees (Gov, Tax, etc)
TOTAL: 111.36

I'm not sure there's any other plan with 1 line that ATT can offer that's cheaper without having less data a month.

That's a wonderful idea except we live in a world where smartphones and big screen TVs dominate so much of the marketplace, and yet people could care less about how their homes look. Phone, computer, TV, Playstation/Xbox. It's a significant priorities problem. And I don't believe there is a medication available through Obamacare to cure society of it. Your assumption that people need phone plan advisors simply reinforces the fact that society as a whole cannot think for themselves, nor do they really want to.

/end rant/

Can some one help me out with my situation? I have an iphone 5 that got ok att and I paid 199.99 with a 2 year agreement. That agreement doesn't expire till March 2015. I checked and I am eligible for the next plan. Now, I want to get the iphone 6+ on the next plan. With that said, since I won't be on the next plan to begin with, do I still have to trade in my iphone 5 to them or is it mine to keep?

AT&T next is great. A lot of people bashing it don't have their facts straight.

Folks keep mixing up old and new plans. The number of people giving out BAD INFORMATION about NEXT is sad. Thanks to the former ATT rep for helping a few people figure this out.

Your cell service is made up of a phone, and service. If you have an expensive service and an expensive phone - CHANGE IT!

Yours to keep.

I did this recently as well.

Hiii, I just ended my 2 year contract on Sprint yesterday and am looking to move 2 lines to AT&T, one of which will be an iPhone and the other possibly a Samsung Galaxy S5. I want to get the iPhone the day it comes out but have no idea how to do so. Because I will be starting a new plan with AT&T and would have to purchase a non-apple phone, would I have to go to the store directly? Or is there any way that I could preorder the iPhone this Friday? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am incredibly confused right now!

I have a question maybe someone can clarify. My 2 year contract its still not over and I am planning on doing the NEXT thing with the iphone 6. What happens with the contract? Does it just go away? Will I still be on a contract? Do I have to pay an ETF?

EDIT: Never mind, reading the OP I see I will be out of my contract. Seems like a WIN WIN!!!

There are some ignorant people out there.

We were spending over $240 for 4 phones. Plus going over on the 2gb onone of them. Plus paying for Ipad cell connection. And paying for internet in hotels.

Now, we pay $160 for all lines, plus tething. Not counting the hotel savings we are in the $1,500 a year savings.

SCAM -

Yea, right!

Ok figured out my line. I average 1.7g of data a month , I have unlimited. I can get the mobile share plan for 65 dollars. Bout 15 less than what I'm paying now.

I do have a discount so it's really 58.20 for the plan. If I get a 6 16gb, next 12 price is 32.50 or next 18 for 27.09.

So total it's not that much more... Then I can upgrade every year or so... Decisions decisions

----------

Sad that I'll lose my unlimited data... But really not in a contract anymore
