Kinda funny too, for the last 2 years Apple exclusively recommended and sold Clens by Bausch and Lomb to clean all the devices. Guess what it contained? Wait for it. Isopropyl alcohol. Do what you like cause I know I will. I've had no ill affects from it.

Old thread, but I was wondering what's best and found the following:

Apple stopped selling and endorsing Clens. They now sell Sanus Elements (it's a gel), which is touted as alcohol and ammonia-free.

Here it is on Apple's site:

I haven't used it so I can't vouch for it.

My 6+ shows finger prints like crazy! Even after I wipe it and wash my hands, still it's a smudgy mess. I just use iClear and spray the cloth, sometimes I dont even spray the microfiber and just use it dry.

some water is good enough

That's all I ever use, applied gently with a well wrung out clean sponge and dried with a microfiber cloth. On most occasions the microfiber cloth is all that is needed.

I use zeiss cleaning wipes from Walmart. They have a version in the electronic section that are alcohol free and work very good. It cleans the screen really good.

I use a Power Support Crystal screen protector, which also has a hardcoat and Oleophobic coating similar to the phone screen itself.

For cleaning I use Plexus and a microfiber cloth. Spray the Plexus sparingly onto the cloth and then polish the phone surface.

Same thing I use on my coated motorcycle visors. Surface is left very slick and stays print-free for about a week. Dust repellent. Also works great inside and outside the Power Support Air Jacket cases, keeps them looking great.

Plexus is sold in motorcycle and aviation shops, specifically for use on clear, coated or uncoated plastic surfaces (such as motorcycle helmet visors and aircraft canopies).

Remember, spray the clean microfiber cloth, not the phone.

Zeiss pump spray lens cleaner and a Zeiss microfiber cloth for those occasional times when I'm not using a screen protector. Same drill, spray the cloth, not the phone.

Hot breath, soft cloth. Done.

Now, instead of sending $5 to iKlear, just send a buck to me.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just received my glass screen protector from Spigen. It came with a 70% isopropyl Alcohol prep pad. The instructions said to clean the screen with it, so I did for ten seconds then put the glass screen protector on.

Did I remove the coating? If it damages the screen, why would they send the prep pad? Makes no sense.

Also, does using a 70% iso alcohol prep pad on the home button cause water damage or trip any indicators?

Everyone has a different opinion, from what I can tell, largely because Apple's stance seems so ambiguous: they have official statements about not using cleaners with alcohol, but then they make business agreements with proprietary cleaners which they sell in the store.

I've never really needed anything but either a microfiber cloth or my cotton shirt. If there is something stuck to the display, rubbing it with my fingers and then using a microfiber cloth always worked.

My iPad 2 receives an alcohol wipe down at least 4 times a week. After 4 years it's still alive and well.

Yeah that's what I did. I mean it came with the screen protector from a reputable brand. Spigen. Just hope it didn't cause water damage.

My iPad 2 doesn't have a screen protector. I wipe it down with a wet tissue and dry with a dry tissue.
Cool, thanks for letting me know. Ive never used alcohol wipe on my screen but I cleaned it with the wipe and the home button. then i put the screen protector on.

I did notice it was a little "liquidly" but it dried up pretty quick. 70%

Using the Zeiss wipes every now and then with the 5, 5S, and now 6, it hasn't hurt my screen at all. I don't have clammy hands so my screen doesn't get that fingerprint laden but I haven't noticed any early degrading in the oleophobic coating at all. Honestly there is very little alcohol in the wipe to begin with so it should be ok but if someone was to saturate a microfiber with isopropyl alcohol it can wear down the effectiveness over time. Bottom line if you don't feel comfortable using alcohol on your screen then there are alcohol free solutions available in wipe form.

how about 70% iso alcohol wipes on home button, can it cause water damage?

Don't douse it and the screen will be fine. Use the minimum amount necessary to accomplish the amount of cleaning you need to do.

Its a wipe that comes in a little package, so its not doused at all. but it does leave liquid residue that dries quickly

Isopropyl alcohol is perfectly safe to use. It will not make the oleo-phobic coating any less effective any quicker than normal. Let's use some common sense people if it's safe enough to use on eyeglasses which are usually coated with various coatings it safe for your iPhone.
Using Isopropyl alcohol continuously will remove the oleophobic coating faster than water. Using it once in a while won't hurt.
As for eyeglass coatings they're a different breed than whats on an iPhone so the comparison isn't really good.

What about using 70% ISO alcohol to clean home button. Could it cause water damage ? Using it from a wipe from a screen protector prep pad.

It shouldn't cause water damage. People have cleaned the button with alcohol with the button depressed so your phone should be fine.
