I guess you should just try to uninstall apps that were installed via package files and you will see the answer :)
You still didn't address the fact that your app remover mostly deletes the .app and .plist files, leaving behind many files that take up MUCH more room than the .plist files. The fact is, your app remover is no better than the others I mentioned, in terms of actual results.
Speaking about Windows users - I did not say about all of them. Believe me, there are A LOT of people that do not understand what those files are and some users tend to think of a virus problems here.
You didn't say a LOT of people. You said "your Windows-friend".
Personally, I started my IT life with Windows and I know a lot about it and about Windows products support. YEAH :)
You don't want to go there with me. Flaunting your qualifications or experience, when you don't know what experience others may have, could be embarrassing.

I really did not post to argue here, but just after the 'friends' thing I did write: 'because lots of people think that they have a virus when they see Mac OS service files on Windows'.

Anyway, that's not the point. I understand that experienced users are very critical with software and I AM too. 'Flaunting'? What for? You were interested in what way the Uninstaller feature is better in CleanMyMac. The answer is that it has a package analyzer, and this will find a lot more leftovers of the apps you uninstall if those apps were installed via a pkg file. And the point of cleaning is not only in the size of files, but in their quantity as well. The less files - the less disk fragmentation.

GGJstudios, I wish I had a chance to go and drink some beer with you. There'd be a lot of topics to chat about :)

Yes, I do work at MacPaw support, but nobody makes me 'protect' this product here. I just like it, because it is really good and this is reinforced by the positive feedback of most of our users. I am at home now, about to watch some TopGear, why would I spend my free time if the product was rubbish? :))

Guys, PLEEEEZZ, just contact us if you have any difficulties. We really did not have any dead-end issues ever.

Look, there's an Apple smiley here!! :apple::apple::apple:

I really did not post to argue here,
Neither did I. I'm only asking you to back up your claims about your product. You began by posting misinformation about a competitive product, so that causes me to question other claims you make. I'm only asking you to explain what makes your product better, if you can.

It still doesn't clean all the leftover files, especially the ones that take up the most space.
And the point of cleaning is not only in the size of files, but in their quantity as well. The less files - the less disk fragmentation.
I think you'll find the vast majority of those interested in a cleaning app are trying to free up space. What's the point of removing a dozen 4kb files, when you leave behind a 1mb file? That's not what users of this kind of app are looking for.
GGJstudios, I wish I had a chance to go and drink some beer with you. There'd be a lot of topics to chat about :) ... Look, there's an Apple smiley here!! :apple::apple::apple:
Beer and smileys don't sell me on software. Performance does.
...why would I spend my free time if the product was rubbish? :))
We're all using our free time here. No one said the product was rubbish. I only said that, like the other apps, it doesn't do a thorough job of removing leftover files from apps. It removes the smaller files but leaves larger ones behind, which defeats the purpose of using a "cleaner" to free up HD space.

Really, unless you know what you're doing, you should be careful about what you remove from your system. What, exactly, are you trying to accomplish?

Trying to free up some space & remove unnecessary things that could possibly slow it down.

While we're on the topic of unnecessary items, when we get update alerts and update various things, ie...safari, firefox, itunes and such - are we supposed to go back in and remove the previous app?? Also, I am supposed to erase or eject any & all, disk images? If I have not, at this point, should I do so?

I have attached the results of the clean my mac screen, I have not clicked on 'remove'

Freeing up space is a good thing. However, simply having files on your hard drive won't slow your system down, unless you're running very low on disk space.

No, the update process takes care of that. Many times, they don't delete the previous app, but only modify it.

When you download an app in a .dmg file, you typically open the .dmg file and move the app to your Applications folder. Once this is done, you can eject the .dmg and delete the downloaded file.

I am so pissed off... weeks after having deleted it, I still have this message in my log... any idea ?

Code:
9/2/10 8:54:18 PM	com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[84]	(com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

OK I just found the solution myself and deleted files in the following directories:

1. /Library/LaunchAgents
2. /Library/LaunchDaemons
3. ~/Library/LaunchAgents
4. ~/Library/LaunchDaemons
5. System/Library/LaunchAgents
6. System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  1. Open Finder and search for CleanMyMac
  2. Click the + button under the search area to add a search criteria
  3. In the drop-down list, select System files, then select "Include"
  4. Delete any files and folders related to CleanMyMac

By the way, those are some of the types of files that CleanMyMac, AppZapper and AppCleaner leave behind. That's why it's more thorough to manually remove apps.

cleanmy mac slowed CS5 AI

After running CleanMyMac for the first time, my Illustrator CS5 now takes about 15 minutes to open or save a file. I tried a fix I found online to turn off create pdf compatible file in permissions but this flattened the file! So now my only option is to reinstall.
Also deleted a folder I hadn't yet backed up, left a shortcut (zero KB) in it's place. Also couldn't seem to stop it from deleting languages once it had started to clean that. I didn't see that was checked. I'm running a 6 month old machine that's running worse than my 2003 G4!!!! In fact yesterday I had to use the G4 to complete a project on time. NOT a happy camper at this point and I'm not too technically advanced, so I'm really lost....

Sorry that happened to you! Just one more reason why I do NOT recommend using CleanMyMac!

After using CleanMyMac,

*cannot print - serious problem
*sooooo slow. Many spinning beach balls.
*Some applications disabled.

I should have read this first....
So, other than Time Machine, nothing??

Maybe you should have left it dirty.

Hmm, are all of you using the latest version? I've had no problems with cleanmymac. It seems to work fine and take out junk while all my apps seem to run without issues? Are you guys talking about erasing apps with it or just the routine stuff like cache and languages etc.

Yes, we're talking about current versions. While you may not have had problems yet, many people have. With so many reporting problems, there are safer alternatives to using CleanMyMac. Monolingual can safely remove languages and architectures. As you can see from this thread, CleanMyMac doesn't do a great job of deleting files left over by apps. See this thread on app deletion:

Best way to FULLY DELETE a program?

So apps like AppZapper and AppCleaner are pretty useless if they only delete stuff that doesn't take much space..Should I go ahead and delete AppZapper (the one I was using) and just start using the manual method from now on?

That's what I recommend. It's far more effective. Yes, it takes more work, but how often do you delete apps?

How about CleanApp? Does anyone use that software? I have done lots of research and tested a few times too and it seems to do a good job. I am not very technical so I could be wrong therefore I would like to hear the opinion of a mac savvy guy. Thx

How about CleanApp?
From: Application that deletes files/folders from other unistalled applications?

did you test CleanApp (which i use) and if so, what were the results ?

No, I haven't heard of that one, but I will test it. You can test it, too. Here's the steps I follow:
  1. Select an app to test with (I use Skype because it has a unique name, so it's easier to find related files)
  2. Follow steps 1-7 in this post to identify the Skype-related files on your computer, but don't delete anything. Make a note of how many files you find.
  3. Close Finder and use CleanApp to identify what it can find related to Skype. Hopefully, it will allow you to do this without actually deleting anything.
  4. Compare your results and see what, if anything, CleanApp would leave behind.

I tested CleanApp using Skype. It left behind 6 folders and 7 files.

thanks for your reply. when i do a search i don't get the option to set "system files". why is that? mind helping mr out there? thx

NEVERMIND - I figured it out :)

I guess you are right. it was pretty convenient to use a third party application rather than manually deleting apps. Thx

I agree! The only app I've used to save space is Monolingual, which effectively removes languages and architectures I know I'll never need. Beyond that, it's best to leave Mac OS X files alone, unless you know exactly what they're used for and all the effects of removing them.

I learnt my lesson with that when I was very very young :D Don't screw with your system files unless your an expert!

I would just like to point out that CleanMyMac works with user applications only and it cannot possibly harm your OS in any way.

That's a flat out lie. My friend just called me up, her MBP is screwed up because of this software. The system fonts are all screwed up, there is NO dock even with the application running in Activity Monitor, and she cant install Lion because of God knows what else this program broke. STAY AWAY from cleanmymac!!

Yeah Im not keeping count but im going to guess about 90% of users from this thread aren't happy... Lucky I found this before I nearly bought it!

STAY AWAY from cleanmymac!!

I'm pretty sure they are talking abt a different app - not CleanMyMac but rather CleanApp

I missed that my first quick go around & got confused, it wasn't until I read everything again, that I noticed this.

I have MacKeeper - any words of advice?? I'm a novice level computer user and have always been worried abt deleting something important while I'm trying to just get more space.....

No, we're talking about CleanMyMac.... read the thread title.

My advice is to uninstall MacKeeper. You really don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space. It will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space.

Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software.

multiple quotes within this specific thread

I read the instructions within MacRumors regarding replying with multiple quotes and just can't seem to figure it out.

When I click on reply or reply with multiple quotes, it (obviously) opens a box for me to reply to - but now that I'm in 'reply' mode, for some reason, the 'quote' option has been removed from the bottom right of each post

Could someone please explain this, I'm guessing in a more 'hold my hand' type of instructions to reply with several quotes. It seems that if I just copy/paste the entire previous thread of what I am replying to, everything is all mushed together and a bit harder to read & understand.

I have lots of quotes so please someone help me - I put this inside this specific thread (instead of 'forum basics' or 'FAQ's' because it is this specific thread I'm wanting to reply to .....

thanks so much
dawn
