What's your opinion now? Do you recommend "Clean my Mac"? If No, why exactly not?
The thread may have started in 2009, but there are many more recent posts. There are ongoing reports of problems with this app, both in this forum and elsewhere. I would strongly recommend against using this app. It's not necessary or effective, and can be harmful if not used with extreme caution.

You don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Some can even degrade, rather than improve system performance.

Some remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space, with the risk of deleting something important in the process. These apps will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space.

Some of these apps delete caches, which can hurt performance, rather than help it, since more system resources are used and performance suffers while each cache is being rebuilt. Caches exist to improve performance, so deleting them isn't advisable in most cases.

Many of the tasks performed by these apps should only be done selectively to troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse as routine maintenance.

Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software. Among other things, it has its own maintenance scripts that run silently in the background on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, without user intervention.

that means you also don't recommend CCleaner (popular Windows app now available for OS X in app store)?

That is correct. You don't need any such apps to keep your Mac running well. Many of these apps leverage off the old Windows mentality of having to "maintain" the system. It's not necessary on a Mac.

I'm a teacher at an Apple School, the first time I cam across Clean My Mac 3, is today, following install the battery monitor disappeared from the menu, and the processor was constantly running an MAX speed, fan going nuts etc. When I advised the student to remove the app, following restart she no longer has wifi access! Avoid like the plague, looks like malware to me.

CleanMyMac Support

Hi!
I represent MacPaw customer support and we will appreciate if you could help us investigate the issue a bit further, because at this point we could not reproduce the same negative behavior related to typing.

Please let us know what particular input devices you are using (is it an Apple keyboard? Wireless or no?)

Just in case, I'd like to mention that it is recommended to restart your Mac after the very first cleanup, because some of the issues can be just cache-cleanup related. Do that if you did not restart the machine so far.

It would be great if you could write back just here or even better - contact me directly at: greka@macpaw.com

Thanks in advance for your cooperation! We are sure that the problem is resolvable :)

You are quite right. It makes more harm than good, if it ever made the latter... We had numerous threads, posts dealing with this harmful "software" which represents the same category as MacKeeper.

The most effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:

Just to add a definitive and authoritative anecdote to this thread ...

I am a computer support technician : yesterday one of my clients ran CleanMyMac2 on his MacbookPro under Lion, because he thought it might help with some unreliability he was experiencing. He is not a technical user.

It deleted ALL his applications and removed them from Trash.

Every single Application and Utility program is gone, about 60GB of stuff. I have no idea what other damage has been done, haven't started the forensic and recovery work yet, but it looks like just all the apps and utilities are gone., most of the Library and user data folders have content remaining.

What a brilliant product! Inspired bit of work, that is.
And free!! What ****ing awesome value.

Be warned ... avoid MacPaw products like you would avoid the plague, or tax collectors.

Hopefully, the user was at least prudent enough to run a backup before performing such a risky procedure.
