I think the Limeys would say that article was written by (or the source for it was) a stupid ole git.

One of the most successful products ever and they're going to radically change it 12 months later? "I know these round wheels work wonders, but let's try them SQUARE!" There really is no good reason to put a physical keyboard when the iPhone's can be customized by software. As Jobs said, the keys just waste space if they're around all the time. Even if you have a slider phone, you're still wasting thickness.

That's what I said.... not 10 - 20 years, 3-5 years and they won't matter too much anymore. Not even for people with poor reception, they may just get a signal booster.

I actually have one and loathe the day when I'm forced to get rid of it. 3 reasons the landline isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

1) VOIP - gives you unlimited nationwide calling for 1/4 the price of a cell phone and not to mention vastly superior international rates
2) Small town America still relies very heavily on their landlines, signal booster or not. You have unlimited local calls for like $5 a month and not everywhere gets reception.
3) So long as businesses have landlines (that's never going to change due to privacy and confidentiality issues) landlines at home will exist

I'm not going to count it but I have a landline for 2 reasons - 1) so I can get AT&T DSL and 2) so I have a number to give all those stupid things that require a phone number but I never want to hear from them.

I'd be far more likely to believe 20+ years but no sooner than that...

I'm sorry, no offense intended but that has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. It completely negates the entire concept and theory behind the iPhone and its complete foundation! Hell will freeze over before that would ever happen!

not prone to hyperbole i see

The screen should be about 20%-30% larger (still pocket-sized), some of that coming from a slight width increase, but much of it coming by pushing the ear slot and home button towards the edges. Something like 640x400 resolution would be nice (will make smaller text more readable and antialiasing sharper).

Much of the complaints about the keyboard could be minimized by making horizontal keyboard a ubiquitous option, further refining typing completion with smarter algorithms, contextual cues (like using surrounding words), allowing multiple simultaneous touches, a user-modifyable dictionary, user-settable word/phrase shorthand expansion, and some haptic feedback (maybe a small single subtle vibrate on a keypress). After using it a while, I think the current keyboard is adequate and could be quite acceptable with a little more work. A lot of people are just so used to a hard keyboard they can't break out of that box, and I actually think typing on a virtual keyboard could in theory be faster because you don't have to physically depress keys.

all of that is amazing, but what happens to predictions if there is not a huge team working for other languages than english? surely apple would offer the biggest thrust to the english market but for those typing in german, japanese etc, do apple have enough staff and engineers to programme to support that as well? i think just make detection better so that mistaken finger pushes will not happen and there is a winner in the works.

otherwise, the rest of the world other than the holy trinity of england, america and upcoming australia will be put out by mailing with no detection or poor detection/predictions

It is like people sat around and said:

"Quick name two things that will never happen to the iPhone?"

"Uh... Clamshell design?"

"Yeah and slideout hardware keyboard."

Alright, lets print it. These are possible next designs for the iPhone.

You couldn't come up with two less likely things to happen to the iPhone if you tried really hard.

Its ridiculous - why does Macrumors even put this on the front page? How do these articles even get space on the web? Next thing you know there will be a rumor of a Black&White iPhone.

Confirmed!!

Time to end the rumors!! This is the official new 3G iPhone..it has all of the features that everybody wanted!!! And I mean everything!!

What of a clamshell dual screen liek the nintendo DS? multitouch all over, but the keyboard will take space from the bottom screen only, leaving the full webpage, txt msg, etc. on top. Also a way to multitask; 1 app on top screen and 1 on bottom.

so.. 2 home buttons..??
lol..
but ya.. a clamshell.. a sexy one btw.. would be hard to pull off.

I wouldn't mind a change in look. It would separate us from the suckers that bought the 1st iPhone. Who wants to be affiliated with them? :D <--Joking

i know steve jobs is strongly anti keyboard on iphone, but honestly.... i want the option of that. it is very much a reason why my wife has an iphone and i have a blackberry.

also, on iphone it needs better:
1- speakerphone
2- camera (with led flash)
3- keyboard (apple could easily figure out a way to have a keyboard and it be hidded until being used)
4- exchangeable battery
5- extra function keys ( i know apple likes it minimalist, but it is too minimalist)

love my thoughts, hate em,I am sure i am not the only one with them

Cream for Jobs

These rumors could be true or not, but whatever the case, applefanatics, or Steve-sycophants, or Jobs-zombies, or whatever you want to call those that always drink the Kool Aid, will cream for it. If Steve-o puts a radar detector and a waffle maker in the next iphone, every apologist will say, "DAMN! I never thought I would need that in my phone, but Steve has shown us the way!"

Now personally, I'd like to see 3G, a better camera, a flash plug-in for safari, and a legal IM app. If I get all that, I'm pretty confident I'd switch carriers just to get an iphone, as it has a KILLER browser and screen.

Would I like a physical keyboard? Yeah, I really would. I've typed on the iphone, and touchscreen thumb typing sucks. I have a full physical qwerty on my current smartphone, and it's just much better. However, I'd rather not have a physical keyboard if it makes the iphone twice as thick. But Steve has enough design sense to not do that. Unless it was thin, he'd never add it.

Would I like a flip phone? If it made the screen twice as big, probably. If it made the phone twice as thick or wasn't an uninterrupted folding screen, then no, I wouldn't want it. However, unless it was cool, thin, and had a folding screen, again, Steve has enough design sense to not add it, I think. I don't know why so many people have had this knee jerk reaction to "flip phone" and they just think "Razr" or something. Think outside the box people, like (your) King Steve does.

What Do We Want?!?!

Oled Screens!!!!

When Do We Want It?!?!

Now!!!!

Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!! Oled!!

If they put a radar detector and a waffle maker on the iPhone, that would TOTALLY be the selling point for me!

possibility

is there ever a possibility that the entire phone is just slightly concave? Is that even doable, engineering-wise?

Psh, slide out keyboard? Making the iPhone twice as thick? For what? The landscape people?

I think it's easier if they put out a bluetooth keyboard.

Flip version? Like a screen and a keyboard? Or like the DS with two screens?

Ehh...same concept as the keyboard...one screen being the keyboard and the other being the screen. It won't get you THAT much space.

Don't worry, the educated and experienced few feel your pain. Those that disagree with us are educated as well, it mainly those that put up excuses for out desire for a REAL or MUCH IMPROVED keyboard on the iPhone that aren't too bright.

Honestly, I can live without a real keyboard, but just make the current one better and give us more options for text input. Why can't they just do this right here, which makes it easier to type:

touch-keyboard-finger.jpg

And not this, which is hard unless you're hippy Steve:

iphone_kbd.jpg

And the Touch's screen is a tad bit thinner than the iPhone's.

And don't forget, there needs to be some improvement on the AT&T side of things as well; like insurance or some kind of option to get my $500 phone repaired.

All I know is that the next iPhone will be 3G.

What I "hope" for is that:

__ 32gb (possible)
__ 2 sided camera (not likely)
__ Higher Rez camera (not likely)
__ GPS (not likely)
__ Open bluetooth so you can add an external BT GPS, BT Stereo headset, or BT Keyboard, like I can with my Palm Treo (not likely)
__ Horizontal Screen Keypad in all aps (possible)
__ Better way to search and save notes to Mac (possible)
__ Removable Battery (not likely)
__ Slimmer (possible)

ALL of these things would be EASY to implement. Hopefully people at Apple read these posts.

So does anyone really think Apple is going to do a slide out keyboard, which means they either lock into english-only market, or start manufacturing the thing for every character set?
Get serious. That very flexibility is the reason for NOT doing a hard keyboard, as stated by Jobs over and over and over. (But chiclet fans will never let go of their precious hard keys.)
sigh.

Flash

i think they should incorporate a flash into the apple symbol on the back of the phone. This allows the simple look to remain while adding a feature that is relatively common in most smart phones...and normal camera phones.

I'm always astounded by people who join forums simply to call its particpants names.
Very mature. On the other hand, doing your name calling up front lets me know not to bother with the rest of your post.
