not really a cliche

But I'm sick of seeing the word "woot"

Does anyone even actually say the word "woot" like that??

no one pronounces the T.....They just holler "wooooo!"

so where did the T come from?? Woot = WTF....
it's an acronym for "we 0wn the 0ther team!" it's usually spelled with zeroes instead of o's. and yes, there are people who say it in conversation.

its actually quite amazing how much cliches influence our everyday word and phrase choice, and how easily we slip into using them, and accepting them from those who we are talking to.

hopefully someday i will be able to take a class just on cliches, very interesting aspect of language.
English major?

That sounds exactly like my English teacher, actually. I can't see myself taking a class on cliches, if such a thing exists. No offense, but I personally don't understand how there could be enough interest in cliches that they would have a class on them.

yes i have a degree in English...
and there are such classes, but not very widespread. it would either be in the linguistics department or writing area of an English department as a whole.

there is a lot to learn about cliches from each one of those points of view...

linguisticly, its important to look at word and phrase usage to learn the dynamics of a language, and how we use them to communicatie with one another, since cliches are so widespread and automatically accepted by the reciever without a thought... its interesting to see how these phrases became to widespread and how they have evolved and mophred over time.

in the creative writing department, its important for writers to look at how to effectively use cliches to their advantage, along when knowing when to avoid using them.

i am interested in both of these areas and especially writing, i took a creative non fiction class my last semester in school, we spent three class periods on just cliches, and we barely scratched the surface

sorry about my tangent there.

"Winning isn't everything." --- That's not true if you're not a loser who just became accustomed to losing.

"This guy came to play!" -- I hate it when they use this in sports commentary.

"Abstract is so awesome" --- ok ok, we get it already! :p

"Money isn't everything."

There is a bank in my city that uses that for their slogan.

...well, when I go to the bank, I'm thinking about money. That's what banks are for.

A one-word cliché which I use sparingly, if ever, now that it has shriveled up in mediocrity the result of being bathed in banality.
"Awesome".

Not a cliché, but I'm sick and tired of, "Y'know what I'm sayin'?"

Y'know what I'm sayin'?

Along the same theme, I'd like to add "you feel me?" as an annoying phrase (along with any derivation of it). L33t bs is also quite irritating when used by anyone past puberty.

"that's a moot point"---this is popular right now, why not mute??

"that's hot"---thanks paris hilton

"Bennifer, Tomkat, Brangelina"---any combo name for a couple (although they are funny)

a few words that are supposed to be descriptive annoy me really:
* flagship
* bottleneck

the worst is people translate those to other languages and the authors think that their language is soo fresh.

"its not about winning or loosing, its about having fun"

---not true :D (if the score of a soccer game is 0-10, do you think the loosing team is having fun :))

Several Buzzwords...do they count?

I can't stand the following few:-

- Let's take that offline for now
- How are 'we' doing (when they haven't done f*** all to contribute!)
- We need to get ticks in boxes

I HATE AND CANNOT STAND PEOPLE WHO SAY "Enjoy!" - I think Jamie Oliver popularised that particular one.

Oh and also "Bless" and "You're a little star" - not least of which because you're really calling them a 'twinkle twinkle' and that's quite rude.

I feel headachy and irrirated now. Damn.
