I finally managed to get my MacBook resolved, but took a while... Having got my 2016 MBP 15" I had previously taken it to an Apple store a couple of times, both times sent away... the first nothing could be heard and it was just dismissed... the second the 'genius' said that he'd heard of it, but there is no known fix at this time, and just told me to monitor a website with recall information....

A couple of months past and the clicking was getting more frequent / annoying... not what any of us want for the amount we all paid..!! I called Apple and told them that I wasn't happy with the device and that I wanted it to be booked in and fixed... At the time my nearest stores were not able to take appointments for a few days... I was advised that another 'authorised distributor' would be able to fix the problem and is 'authorised to repair/replace' just like a normal Apple store (this I later found wasn't the case)

The laptop went in and on check in was 'clicking'... Great :) least they heard it... I got an update a couple of days later saying that the engineer has also heard the clicking and is working on a repair... They changed the battery, track pad, screen... days went by... I then got a call asking for permission to change the logic board as this would loose all information... this was granted and more days went by.... after three weeks I was told that it was like 'Trigger's broom', they had replaced practically the whole laptop - but it was still clicking... I asked for a replacement saying that I need the device back and was told it would originally take no more than two weeks... The representative said they would escalate the request... The next day I was told that a replacement was being arranged... The following day I called and asked if I could arrange for a collection and was told that the replacement was now on hold. Apple now said that the authorised distributer was not authorised to make a replacement until 30 days had passed... Both Apple and the authorised distributer both accepted that my Mac would be sitting on a shelf as nothing further can be done until the time had passed, but that nothing could be done...

I wasn't happy to say the least! I escalated the matter with apple and spoke to several 'senior reps' over the next couple of days... All agreed it wasn't right, all saying they would 'take ownership' and resolve the problem... It was no good, I ended up having to wait for the 30 days to pass... But then it wasn't that simple... Apple needed me to arrange for the authorised distributor to return the Mac to their store, for me to collect, then they would collect from me - once they've received it they would arrange a replacement... They couldn't just arrange for an internal transfer as the authorised stores aren't recognised in that way.... Alternatively, I could pay a 'holding transaction' on my credit card for the full price of a replacement.. HA..

Thankfully there was a silver lining though. The last senior rep, and the replacement rep were excellent, and Kindly agreed to exchange my 2.7GHz 2016 MBP with the 2.9GHz 2017 MBP... I have been on/off it now for a while since it's come back and NO CLICKING :-D

Be carfull with replacements. I had an issue with my iMac and they replaced it, his words were “oh you will get the updated processor that is faster”.

Silly me never checked the specs till about 6 months later and whilst it was a “faster speed” they replaced an i7 with an i5 processor.

What MBP did you have and then receive?

the clicking problem can occur again after some time, there is still no permanent solution from Apple for this problem, design of hinges is horrible

Since I got my MacBook Pro TB I have been hearing the occasional pop. I just realized I haven't heard in months. Whatever it was, it seems to have self corrected.

My 2017 MacBook Pro 13" TB i7 16GB Ram 1TB makes a very audible static click sound just seconds after the speakers play a sound, for example the glass notification alert for a newly arrived iMessage. Right after my notification sound I hear the click sound either coming directly out of the left or the right speaker, its alway just one "click" sound. Makes a beautiful laptop very undesirable to use.

This click sound is absolutely coming from the L or R speaker and not the hinges. Its some sort of a static electrical short issue I believe.

Mine is making very strange "whistling" noises when I press the bottom of the laptop. It even does it when turned off and also when typing on the keyboard with palms pressing on the surface (since the whole thing moves a little bit). Curious what that is, I am bringing it to the service tomorrow..

so, a summary to my problem, I brought my Macbook Pro 13 2016 to the official Apple repair partner here in Bern, Switzerland (no Apple store here...), they changed the whole bottom plate with battery (also changed keyboard which had 1 key sticking), but the whistling noise was there again after a few days (it drives me crazy since it whistles loudly when I type on the keyboard, also when it's powered off)...
Having enough of this I arranged a meeting at the Genius Bar in Apple Store in Zürich, where the technician heard the noise, told me he had never seen that before, and told me since it's more than 1 year old he has to try to repair it, no exchange possible, but he can basically try to do what the other serviceman did, and if it does not help I just have to live with it... Which surprised me, since the thing together with AppleCare+ for 3 years was almost 3000 CHF (3000$)
At home I found out the laptop was not even 1 year old (I did not remember when exactly it was bought), so actually he even probably gave me a wrong info regarding that service...
I have now written a complaint to Apple (can't visit the store until Tuesday personally), don't really like the customer service they provide here...

I have a 2017 15" MBP with Touch Bar. I'm also having the random pops, they usually occur early in the morning which leads me to think that it's associated with the computer going form cool to warm as I start working on it. Would like to see a resolution from Apple before my warranty runs out and this becomes an issue.

The same issue. It's not a display hinges - that is different case. Yes, it's audible short static click sound after the speakers play a short notification sound. The power of the sound is not connected to the power level set for the speakers. Also when you plug in headphones - you doesn't hear it in headphones and there are no static click from speakers, while headphones are connected. The sound is not regular. Sometimes it's going after notifications, sometimes not.

Hello guys. I have same problem on my Macbook Pro 2017 15". Random times popping sound comes from that. Any solution for that yet?

After the Apple Store exchanged my product it has worked perfectly. Try going to the Apple store. It worked for me.

Hey guys!

After four exhausting months of fighting for my consumer rights given by Austrian legislation the APR where I bought my machine finally gave in and offered me a replacement machine. However I had to fight my way to the head of customer service first to get everything worked out. I also got the APP almost for free since they totally screwed up with the customer service in my case and they wanted to compensate for that.

I was now offered a brand new 2017 model, which I finished setting up today. It is great so far! Imho especially the keyboard feels nicer on this one compared to the 2016 one... Time will tell if the 2017 will also produce the popping sounds after a few months, but so far I am very happy with it. The display hinge feels different on the 2017 one compared to my 2016 one, it seems more rigid which I think is a good sign.

I have used my 2016 machine for a month after the display assembly was replaced and it never popped once, so there might be hope that it fixes the problem. Good luck with your machines!

Hey --id--, would you mind updating us on your experience with your new machine? Mine started clicking again... :(

After more than one year my 2017 model still works great! No clicking noises as with my 2016 one. I noticed over time that the thermals are much better with the newer model. It is now able to run at full turbo without thermal throttling when only the cpu is taxed. This was not the case with the older model.

However, the keyboard on the 2017 is starting to act up a little since I used it outside a few times. Maybe some dust built up under the keycaps. Some keys got stuck at some point, but they somehow recovered themselves after a few days of usage and now only the "j" key is sometimes giving me double presses...

@owl If I remember correctly your MBP was repaired, right?

I had this problem with the keyboard 3 times. At first they just replaced the key, which was not the solution. They have changed my topcase twice.

However, my MBP 2017 15” is making the same popping sound as the 2016 model did. I decided to live with it. My 2800 EUR costing machine has a handicap. Bummer. :(

Hey guys, just a sharing from what I actually encountered on my MacBook Pro 2015 15inch

1)Get a P5 screwdriver, Penelope 5
2)Unscrew all the screws
3)Screw them diagonally, but don't tighten them. Screw in just enough
4)Tighten them again diagonal.

Apparently this works for me. Good luck people!

i own mbp 2016 for year and half and about a week ago it started to pop
is someone without warranty tried to lubricate/oil hinges ?

if it didn't happen to me for more than year i think it's because hinges just dry out

update:
i tried to lubricate hinges with few dots and it didn't help
i tried to loose screws that hold hinges, and it HELPED pop sound is gone!

I'm very surprised to report that this worked for me as well.

My 2016 MBP 13" started popping a month or so out of warranty and has been getting progressively louder over time. After slightly loosening the screws highlighted in the photograph attached to post #318, my MBP is quiet.

Yes this method works for me on mbp 15 2018 (om my newer mbp there are two not three screws hold the lead).
Thank you :)

Update: clicking returned (

Just exchanged my Vega 20 MBP out this morning because of this issue. Hopefully the new one doesn't do it.

Update: Just began importing 1425 RAW files into LR and nothing so far. This is exactly the kind of taxing it took when it popped before.

So there is hope for those out there who can still exchange.

Doesn't mean it can not begin doing it a week a month or whatever down the road. However my last one was immediate out of the box as soon as I taxed the thing.
